Demonstrations: Journal Sections and Submission Guidelines 1. Online Submissions 2. Author Guidelines 3. Copyright Notice 4. Privacy Statement 1. Online Submissions All articles will need to be submitted online on the journal webpage, which will be up soon. 2. Author Guidelines Contributions must be original, unpublished work and must not be submitted to another publication simultaneously. All contributions and correspondence should be submitted via the Journal's online submission system. Articles should be submitted in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, and RTF file formats. A printed copy of the manuscript is not required. The Editors reserve the right to edit or alter contributions, but authors will receive proofs for approval prior to publication. In addition, authors are required to make sure submitted content does not infringe 3rd party copyright. More information from the UK Intellectual Property Office can be found here: Sections Original research articles Research articles of up to 8,000 words (including references, captions and notes) are invited in line with the objectives of the Journal and are double- blind, and peer- reviewed. As Demonstrations is a digital- only journal, there is no limit to the number and type of multimedia material graphics, visualisations, photos, sound recordings, videos. Authors are invited to use formats and numbers of illustrations that are necessary to demonstrate their argument. Experiments Short discussions ( words) alongside multimedia illustrations of work- in- progress to generate debate, invite feedback, and identify possible collaborations. Rather than the lengthier academic peer- review process a shorter editorial review is undertaken by two of the Journal editors. 1
Commentaries Short essays ( words) on key issues and debates, responses to previous Journal content, and so on. Rather than the lengthier academic peer- review process a shorter editorial review is undertaken by two of the Journal editors. Publication schedule Demonstrations does not publish content in issues but on a continuous basis as content is finalised. The Editors will advise authors of accepted submissions about the approximate release date. Rather than special issues the Journal will publish special themes, which are collections proposed and curated by guest editors. Please contact the editors for more information if you are interested in editing a special theme. Manuscript preparation Please use the style template available here for word or OpenOffice/Libre office. If you are unable to use the template, please follow the these guidelines. The first page should contain a title, subtitle (if desired), acknowledgements (if any), and the corresponding author s name, affiliation, e- mail address, postal address and telephone number. Affiliations and e- mail addresses of co- authors should also be included. The second page should contain an abstract of words. This should indicate the scope of the paper and its main arguments. The remainder should contain the main body of the text, references, appendices, tables, and necessary footnotes (numbered consecutively). Endnotes should be kept to a minimum. The main body of the text of original research articles should be anonymised; this does not apply to experiments or commentaries. Style Guidelines Submissions should be written concisely and clearly. The text should be in 12- point Times New Roman font, and double- spaced (including Abstract, References and Footnotes). Page numbers should be entered at the top right- hand corner of each page. Headings and sub-headings Headings within the text should be positioned on the left- hand side of the text; Primary Headings should be typed in bold and have initial capital letters; Secondary Headings should be italicised and have initial capital letters; Tertiary Headings should be in normal font and also have initial capital letters. 2
Endnotes Endnotes should be kept to a minimum. They should not be used for references, but for explanation and expansion of an argument where appropriate. Endnote reference numbers should appear as consecutive Arabic numerals and must be embedded in the text (so that any additions or deletions will automatically change all the footnote changes throughout the paper). Referencing Formatting should conform to the Harvard Style, which can be selected in referencing software such as Zotero or Endnote. Citations in text should be referenced in parentheses: (Author Year) as in (Whitehouse 1978); (Author Year: Pages) e.g., (Stengers 2008: 309). References should be listed under a heading called References at the end of the document, and should appear in alphabetical sequence using the following style: Journal articles Stengers, I (2005) Introductory Notes on an Ecology of Practices. Cultural Studies Review 11(1): Journal articles published ahead of print (e.g., Online First): Stengers, I (2005) Introductory Notes on an Ecology of Practices. Cultural Studies Review 00: 1-13 (accessed 1 January 2005). Books Latour B. (1993) We Have Never Been Modern. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press. On Ask Forgiveness [Audio File]. Retrieved from Bender, L. (Producer), & Tarantino, Q. (Director). (2003). Kill Bill: Vol. 1 [Motion picture]. United States: Miramax. Grey literature This includes, but is not restricted to, governmental and non- governmental reports, pamphlets, internal company documents, conference papers, working papers and unpublished material. Reference to grey literature should follow the author and title style for books, but without italics for the title. Other conventions Language English is the working language of the Journal. Words in other languages should be italicised. Spelling First preference spelling from the Oxford English Dictionary should be used (e.g., criticize, organization, but analyse, incise ); as should British- English (e.g., aesthetic, learnt, labour, programme, skilful, unshakeable ). Abbreviations and Acronyms Abbreviations and acronyms should be explained at the first occurrence. These, and other conventions, should be used consistently throughout the paper, and typed without full points. Thus: GNP, PhD. Per cent is preferred to %, unless used frequently. Always percentage. Dashes Use an em- rule ( ) with a character space either side. Numbers, Dates and Measurements Words should be used for simple numbers from one to ten, while figures should be used for numerals from 11 upwards. Exceptions are references to page numbers, and in sets of numerals, some of which are higher than ten (e.g., 17, 6 and 2). 4
Four- figure numbers should have a comma, and a further comma with each additional three figures (e.g., 2,000; 5,000,000.) Dates should be written in full (e.g., 15 February 1943), and decades in number, without abbreviation (e.g., the 1980s). Write 20th century, and use 21st- century ideas. Metric units are preferred for contemporary weights and measures. Quotations When in the text these should be in single quotation marks, and should be in double quotation marks when appearing as quotations within quotations. Quotations of more than two lines of text should be indented. Tables, Illustrations and Figures Tables, illustrations and figures should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals, and placed in their appropriate location and caption marked in the text. Illustrations may be provided in colour or greyscale and submitted as.tiff or.jpeg files with a minimum quality of 300dpi. Because the Journal is online only there is no cost for the inclusion of photographs, visualisations, graphics, maps, videos etc. and contributors are encouraged to use as many illustrations as is required. Authors who are in doubt about the accepted style or conventions should refer to a recent article of Demonstrations. Submission Preparation Checklist As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines: The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor). The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided and in an abbreviated format using a service such as bitly: go to bitly.com. The text is double- spaced; uses 12- point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines. 3. Copyright Notice Authors who publish with Demonstrations agree to the following terms: a. Authors retain copyright and grant Demonstrations right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under an Attribution- NonCommercial- 5
ShareAlike 2.5 UK license that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in Demonstrations. More information on Creative Commons here: nc- sa/2.0/uk/ nc- sa/2.0/uk/ b. Authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non- exclusive distribution of the Journal's published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in Demonstrations. c. Authors are permitted and encouraged to post their work online (e.g., in institutional repositories or on their website) prior to and during the submission process, as it can lead to productive exchanges, as well as earlier and greater citation of published work. 4.
