3 Introduction and Sample Plan Favorite Authors is a series that delves into the life and works of a single author, providing a myriad of activities that pertain to several of the author s books. In this volume the stories and illustrations of James Marshall are offered for classroom study, complete with dozens of activity pages that cross the curriculum. When using this book, the following three-part plan is beneficial. It is divided into three sections to help you organize and simplify the presentation of the books in this unit. After each activity suggestion, a variety of sample questions and prompts are offered. Before you read... Ask the students to share their feelings and experiences as they relate to the book. Use your knowledge of the book to ask them questions. Also use the title and cover to elicit their responses. Have you ever argued with a good friend? Do you like to play pranks on people? How does it feel to eat too much? Suggest some details students can look for in the illustrations to give them ideas about the book s content. Count Red Riding Hood s cats. Examine Martha s clothing for details and colors. Experience some of the things that are mentioned in the book. Share food that is mentioned in the story. Provide a significant item from the book for the students to look over and handle. During the reading... At appropriate intervals, stop the reading and ask comprehension questions. Is George a good friend? What is Fox s mistake? Who is sleeping in Baby Bear s bed? Ask other critical thinking questions. What should Pig do to keep a job? How would you get rid of the rats on the roof? What if Hansel and Gretel had found a kind woman (instead of a witch) in the forest? Stop reading and predict what will happen next. What do you think Joe s mother will do? What will George and Martha do in the Tunnel of Love? After the reading... Complete some or all of the suggested worksheets, games, and crafts. Have the class or small groups create a play to reenact the book or particular events. Discuss the students opinions of this book and choose another title for independent reading. 4 About the Author James Marshall was born on October 10, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas. He attended several colleges, including the New England Conservatory of Music where he received a scholarship to study the viola. However, a hand injury cut short his musical studies. He changed directions, transferring to Southern Connecticut State College to earn a degree in French and history. James Marshall It is interesting to note that James Marshall never studied art. He did, however, pursue art as a hobby, and clearly had a natural talent. Marshall taught high school French and Spanish for a brief time while continuing to indulge himself in his hobby. A friend who saw his artwork put him in touch with the director of children s books at Houghton Mifflin, and a new career for Marshall was born. James Marshall s career grew, and he produced many award-winning books. In fact, his retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears was the Caldecott Honor Book for Caldecott awards are given for excellence in illustration. Marshall s stories and illustrations are marked by simplicity and humor. He believed that a story... must have a good beginning and a strong middle, but without a knockout ending, you re shot. He conveyed this philosophy consistently and successfully in formats ranging from easy-to-read (the Fox series) to original picture books (The Cut-Ups, George and Martha) to the retelling of classic stories (Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood). Many of his more popular books have been adapted to video and cassette. Sadly, James Marshall died of a brain tumor on October 13, 1992, just after his fiftieth birthday. Fortunately, his many works live on to be enjoyed by new generations of children around the world.
