1 Name: Ancient Egypt Detective: Research paper Dear Student, Did you know? Historians and Archaeologists are detectives. They solve the mysteries of the past using artifacts, primary sources, critical thinking, and inquiry. Egyptologists are archaeologists who specialize in solving the historical mysteries of Ancient Egypt. This year YOU will develop your history detective skills to investigate problems the Ancient Egyptians faced and how they solved those problems. It will be your job to act as an Egyptologist- a history detective- to investigate, research, analyze, and write about the amazing Ancient Egyptian people! Your task will be to choose a problem the Ancient Egyptians had to solve. You will investigate what the problem was, how it affected the Egyptians, their solution, how this solution improved the lives of Ancient Egyptians, and its impact on us today! You will use your research to write an Academic Research Paper. We will learn how to write a research paper and will work on it in Social Studies and Language Arts class. You will also find many resources on the Social Studies website. Let s get started! 2 Step 1: Research and Works Cited When historians want to research a topic, they normally start with a question they want to answer or a historical problem s solution they want to understand. For this project, consider problems the Ancient Egyptians encountered and their solutions to those problems. Think about ways these issues were significant to the history and culture of the Egyptians. A. Choose your problem: Examine the list of problems the Egyptians faced. Choose the one that interests you the most by drawing a star beside it. This problem will guide your research. For example, perhaps I choose the problem of flooding from the Nile River. Preserving the dead for the afterlife Building large structures Worshipping their gods & goddesses Growing crops to feed their people Flooding from the Nile River Defending themselves from enemies Written Communication Protecting themselves from the sun Entertaining and competing for fun Using the river for transportation and/or trade Expressing themselves B. Next, conduct your research to learn more details about this problem and the solution the Egyptians discovered. Use articles, books, textbooks, websites, etc. As you do research and take notes, keep thinking about how the Egyptians solved the problem. Research that does not focus on the problem and solution should be not be used!!! Taking Notes: Notes should be written in your own words or should use quotation marks to indicate an author s words. Plagiarism (borrowing another s work without giving credit) is against copyright law, as well as our code of conduct, and will result in a poor grade. C. Create a Works Cited page (use Works Cited Page provided). As you research and find information that provides details about the problem/solution, you must cite (keep track of) all the sources that you are using. You must record the author, title, date of publication, and other information based on the type of source. Use MLA Works Cited Page Instruction and Sample on the next page to help you. 2

3 MLA Works Cited Page Instructions and Sample An MLA Works Cited Page Begins on a new page Includes the words Works Cited centered at the top of the page, without quotation marks, italics, or underlining Starts each entry on a new line, aligned to the left Indents the second and all additional lines in an entry five spaces ( hanging indent ) Double-space all lines Alphabetizes by the author s last name or first word in a book title. 4 Step 2: Research Paper What is a historical research paper? A research paper is an in-depth study of a historical topic that includes a strong thesis statement, evidence from reliable sources, and a strong conclusion to support the thesis. Essentially, the writing provides EVIDENCE to support your conclusion of how the Egyptians solved one of their problems or issues and HOW they did it. Follow the steps below to create an excellent research paper! 1. Develop a Thesis Statement A thesis statement is the solution to the problem you researched. A thesis statement provides the central idea of your writing. It states what will be proven, and lists the main points presented in the paper based on the research and evidence collected. A good thesis DOES NOT include words like I believe or My opinion. The thesis statement is the last sentence of your first (introductory) paragraph. Example Thesis statement: The Ancient Egyptians solved the difficult problem of controlling the Nile River by developing a highly advanced system of flood control, using irrigation, and inventing the shadoof, which caused Egyptian civilization to grow and prosper. 2. Write a Rough Draft: Use the rough draft outline provided by your teacher. A. Introduction and Thesis (5-8 sentences) 1. Hook your audience then briefly introduce the problem and solution. How did this problem impact or make life difficult for the Egyptians? Was this problem/solution unique to the Egyptians? Was the solution difficult to discover? Did it take time, money, resources? 2. End this paragraph with your thesis statement. B. Body (at least 3 paragraphs) 1. Each paragraph is a main point from your thesis statement. You will probably have 3-5 main points. Your task is to PROVE the correctness of your thesis with these points with evidence from your research, examples, and connections to your thesis statement. 2. Each point should include supporting evidence and details from your research. This is where your thinking should be evident, and it is where you paraphrase & cite your sources! a. If you are using the exact words from a book or article, you must use quotation marks. You should not use more than one to two sentences of quotations at a time. Add a citation at the end of the sentence using parentheses and the author s last name OR the name of the webpage or book and the page number. b. If you are paraphrasing, read the research and then put it into your own words by thinking about what it means. Add a citation at the end of the sentence using parentheses and the author s last name or the name of the webpage OR book and the page number. 4

Make connections, give interesting information, and make your reader FEEL the importance of the problem the Egyptians faced and the brilliance of their solution! C. Conclusion (5-8 sentences) 1. Restate your thesis statement. 2. Summarize your main points. 3. Conclude with the importance of the Egyptian s solution/how it affected their civilization and make any connections to how we are still impacted by their solution today. 4. Connect back to your hook for a strong finish. 3. Read, Revise, Reread, Edit! You should read your own paper multiple times after the rough draft. You should ask other students, parents, teachers, etc. to read and offer suggestions. Revise & Edit! Grammar, Spelling, Where is the Evidence to back up your Punctuation thesis statement? Details!! Does it make sense? Word Usage and Vocabulary Requirements Typed 1-3 page minimum Includes: Introduction, Body (3-5 paragraphs), Conclusion Times New Roman, 12 point font Double Spaced Your name, the date, and class period in the top right corner Page numbers in the bottom right corner Title of paper centered on the first line (can be 14 font) A least 3 different sources must be used! All sources must be cited on the Works Cited Page AND by using in-text citations! A Works Cited Page with at least 3 sources is attached to the back of your paper Completed 4. Publish Should be typed Works Cited Page is attached as the last page. Can be a paper copy, ed, or sent as a shared document on Office 365 (using your school and password). 5

(5 points) Includes 3-5 logical main points to support Thesis (10 points each paragraph) o Each point includes supporting evidence and details from research. o Historical thinking is evident through connections, examples, etc. that support the problem/solution and thesis statement. o Each point/evidence is explained fully for the reader. o Paper flows logically with transitions. Thesis is restated. (5 points) Main points are briefly summarized (5 points) The importance of the Egyptian s solution to their civilization is discussed. Any connections to how we are still impacted by their solution today are included when appropriate (5 points) Concluding sentence ties back to the hook (5 points) Grammar, spelling, and punctuation are complete and correct. (5 points) Mistakes do not detract greatly from the overall message of the writing. (5 points) Information is accurate. (10 points) Research evidence is paraphrased (in your own words) or quotation marks are used. In-text citations are used to give credit to the author. (10 points) Student uses reliable historical evidence to support thesis. (5 points) Works Cited page (20 points) o is attached, complete and, accurate. o At least 3 sources are used and cited correctly. Points Possible TOTAL
