2 Aim To understand Christ the King s three-step plan to writing fiction and non-fiction. Talk for Writing
3 Text Types: Narratives Non-chronological Reports Instructions Explanations Persuasion Discussion Recounts Journalistic Writing The three-step plan can be used for all of these.
4 The Three-Step Process for Story Making IMITATION (step 1) familiarisation Learning and retelling a story until it can be told fluently Multi-sensory approach, made memorable INNOVATION (step 2) adapting Substitution, addition, alteration, change of viewpoint and reusing the basic story pattern INVENTION (step 3) creating your own story Building up a story drawing drama, images, video, firsthand experience, location, quality reading, etc
5 Inventing a Story: Re-telling Why is this important? Vastly improves quality Allows children to focus on quality of language when writing rather than having to channel all their energies into sequencing and the plot

10 The Three-Step Plan for Non-Fiction Example: Non-chronological Reports
11 (1) Imitation Find an interesting way to begin. The class are dragon hunters that have been invited to write entries for the 'Dragon Hunter's Guide to Dragons of the British Isles'. A dragon has been sighted in the area. It is a Bristol Ridge-Back Dragon. To find out more, the class read a report.
12 (1) Imitation Class then learn the text Can be done with text map and actions Read and investigate each paragraph to help children internalise the patterns of the language
13 (2) Innovation The Dragon experts have been invited to add to the new edition of: The Dragon Hunter's Guide Book to Dragons of the British Isles'. Grand Master (teacher) will help everyone by showing them how to create their entry. Boxing Up
14 (2) Innovation Shared Planning: As a class, invent a new dragon - fill details into boxed up planning as done with the Bristol Ridge- Back
15 (2) Innovation Hook / Introduction Paragraph 1: what they look like Paragraph 2: what they eat Paragraph 3: their habitat Paragraph 4: wow facts Conclusion: how to preserve this endangered species
16 (2) Innovation Shared write an entry to the Dragon Hunter's Guide based on boxed up planning. Children to independently write a version using the boxed up information we thought of as a class. Grand Master (teacher) reviews and gives feedback.
17 (3) Invention Everyone creates a totally different dragon Children to create their own boxed up planning Do extra sections need to added (for more able learners)? e.g. 2 extra paragraphs, history of, comparing to others of the species Further Extension: Writing reports about other mythical creatures such as unicorns, phoenix, etc
18 Talk for Writing As a parent Read to and with your child Compare different stories and their component parts (characters, plot, setting, ending) Read simple stories with your child (that they already enjoy) and encourage them to write their own version base on the original.
