No.3. Tropic Days.

[1] BANFIELD, Edmund James. Collection of ten letters written by Banfield to Charles Barrett. Brammo Bay, Dunk Island (Queensland), 19 April March Ten letters on 28 leaves (first leaf of one letter missing), oblong octavo and quarto, typed with ink holograph corrections and additions, signed; in excellent state. $6600 An established journalist, Banfield retreated to Dunk Island off the Queensland coast in 1897 after a nervous breakdown brought on by overwork. Here he lived, in relatively primitive circumstances, for 25 years in tranquillity, happiness and security until his death. His four classic books describing the island and his experience of life in the wild, commencing with Confessions of a Beachcomber, were published between 1908 and 1925 (after his death). Banfield was described by H.M. Green as the first and most notable Australian member of the tribe of Gilbert White of Selborne and he has also been compared to the American writer, David Thoreau, whose classic account of his primitive solitude at Walden resembles Banfield s reflective writings. A personal and often anecdotal correspondence from the last years of his life. Written to fellow author and natural history enthusiast Charles Barrett, the letters, relating mostly to his own publications and to natural history matters, provide an insight into Banfield s world on Dunk Island. Added is a 1927 letter to Barrett from Banfield s widow concerning the forthcoming sale of Dunk Island. [2] BANFIELD, Edmund James. My Tropic Isle. London, T. Fisher Unwin, Octavo, pp. 316, [4] (advertisements) + 24 leaves of plates; light wear to the extremities and a little foxing, very good in original black cloth, the front board with a portrait of an islander embossed in blind, his adornments and foreground foliage blocked in white; top edge gilt, others rough trimmed, lacks free back endpaper. $275 Very scarce: first edition. ANB, 3646; Greenway, 592; Johnston-Zerner, F625. [3] BANFIELD, Edmund James. Tropic Days. London, T. Fisher Unwin, [ 1918]. Octavo, pp. 314 (last blank), [2] (blank) + 33 leaves of plates, printed tissue guard to plate at p. 19; extremities little rubbed or wearing, a touch of occasional foxing, very good in original black cloth, the spine and front board lettered in light blue. $440 First edition of Banfield s third book, the last published in his lifetime and, as a book published in the depths of wartime, by far the scarcest of his books. ANB, 3648; Greenway, 593. [4] BANFIELD, Edmund James. Last Leaves from Dunk Island. Sydney, Angus & Robertson, Octavo, pp. xxxii, 232, [4] (index) + 26 leaves of plates (last two plates face pp. 212 and 220, and so issued, not pp. 216 and 224 as in the list of plates); some foxing, very good in original green cloth, lettered in black. $85 First edition: the posthumous final volume in Banfield s quartet, with an introduction by Alec H. Chisholm. ANB, 3646; Greenway, 591; Johnston-Zerner, F628. [5] BANKS, Mary Macleod. Memories of Pioneer Days in Queensland. London, Heath Cranton Ltd, Octavo, pp eight leaves of plates; foxing here and there but very good in bright original cloth with the scarce little edge-worn dustwrapper. $275 First edition: an account of childhood and youth spent on the Brisbane River during the 1870s and 1880s; with a foreword by Lord Lamington, the former Governor of Queensland. The author s father, David Cannon McConnel, was a pastoralist who settled on the Brisbane River in Her mother, Mary McConnel, also (privately) published her reminiscences in 1905 and that is a very rare book indeed. ANB, 3669; Greenway, 596; Johnston-Zerner, A618. [6] BARRETT, Charles. From Range to Sea: A Bird Lover s Ways. Melbourne, T.C. Lothian, Octavo, pp.68 (last blank), with illustrations in the text throughout; a very good copy in original wrappers by Ruby Lindsay. $440 Scarce: a series of nature rambles, this is the first edition of the first book by Charles Barrett, subsequently the author of over 60 books. While most were on natural history, his published output includes a good number of travel books, a handful of children s adventure stories (mainly writing as Donald Barr ), as well as works of history, anthropology, and bibliophily. The art nouveau wrapper design by Ruby Lindsay also makes this book of special interest. Undertaken before her departure for England, where she died shortly afterwards, it is one of the earliest of her tragically few illustrative works.

No. 9. Flight to Hell.

[7] BASEDOW, Herbert. Journal of the Government North-West Expedition. Adelaide, Royal Geographical Society of Australasia, South Australian Branch, Octavo, pp. [ii], [57] leaves of plates, and a large folding map; a very good, clean copy in original grey-green wrappers, the spine a little sunned and rubbed at the extremities. $660 An author s presentation copy of the first edition of the official account of this important scientific and anthropological expedition under the leadership of L.A. Wells that linked together the areas traversed by the Horn and Elder Expeditions. Inscribed and signed by the author on the front wrapper. Basedow s narrative comprises the diary journal of this 1903 expedition, which was primarily a search for minerals to the Musgrave, Petermann, Tomkinson and Mann Ranges. It includes his detailed observations of the land explored, the Aborigines, and the natural history of the country traversed. Not in ANB; Greenway, 729 (periodical printing only); Mills, Q1A. [8] BASEDOW, Herbert. Narrative of an Expedition of Exploration in North-Western Australia [complete with] Sketch Plan of the North-West Coast of Australia. Adelaide, W.K. Thomas & Co., Octavo, pp. [ii], (last blank) + 41 leaves of plates (one leaf printed in red and black), with the scarce separately-issued folding map; the text with some spotting but a good copy in original wrappers (little worn), the scarce separatelyissued folding coloured map loose in its printed envelope as issued (edges of this little sunned otherwise fine.$550 Presentation copy, inscribed and signed on the front wrapper. This is the first separate edition, complete with the scarce separately-issued folding coloured map. Basedow s narrative comprises the diary journal of the expedition with detailed observations of the Aborigines, natural history, geology and geography of the regions explored. The expedition was carried out between April and June 1916 to search for minerals in the Kimberleys, North-west Australia. Realising the rare opportunity for conducting scientific research in a tract of practically unknown country, I resolved that, after the work entrusted to me by the Syndicate had been completed, I would on my own account continue the explorations further afield. In the end, Basedow achieved results well beyond his merely commercial brief. [9] BERTRAM, Hans. Flight to Hell. London, Hamish Hamilton, Octavo, pp. 286, [2] (blank) + 15 leaves of plates; very good in original balck cloth, spine lettering a little faded as often; map endpapers. $220 First English edition: very scarce. Bertram and a co-pilot flew a Junkers monoplane from Berlin to Australia on a goodwill mission. After completing the Asian leg of their flight, they took off for Australia and vanished from the face of the earth. Aeroplanes and ships were despatched to search for the plane but without success and, after a few weeks of intense international interest, they were given up for lost. The aviators, however, had endured forty days, effectively without food and water, in the North-West Australian wilderness when they were found by Aborigines and, after fifty-three days in all, were returned to civilisation. Undaunted, Bertram continued his flight to its completion. The account of his Flug in die Hölle, his Flight into Hell, was published in German in 1933 and was soon translated into English. The English edition is quite scarce, especially with dustwrapper. A new English-language adaptation of Bertram s account, for a television program, was published in Not in ANB (but see for German editions); Greenway, 1266; Mills, M82. [10] BEUKERS, John. From the Fo castle to the Pulpit. London, Arthur Stockwell and Perth (Western Australia), Methodist Book Depot, n.d., circa Octavo, pp. [iv], 292; a very good, bright copy in original decorated red cloth, the cheap paper tanned at the edges. $220 Author s signed and inscribed presentation copy. An autobiographical account by a Congregational minister, the last chapters relate to his experiences as a pastor in West Australia. All copies located have the title-page annotation Author s Colonial Edition ; it appears that this was, in fact, the only edition.

[11] BEUKERS, John. The Humour and Pathos of the Australian Desert. London, Arthur Stockwell and Perth (Western Australia), Methodist Book Depot, n.d., circa Octavo, pp. 250 (last blank), [2] (press notices and advertisement), [2] (blank) + frontispiece; some signs of use but very good in original decorated red cloth, a trace of foxing throughout. $165 First edition: an account of the author s experiences in the Central and West Australian outback during the first decade of the century. Beukers had published a more abbreviated and quite distinct work on the same theme under a different title in Perth in [12] BIRTLES, Francis Edwin. Lonely Lands: Through the Heart of Australia. Sydney, N.S.W. Bookstall Co., Octavo, pp. xvi (last full page map), 224, [2] (blank), 16 (book advertisements), [8] (general advertisements), numerous illustrations (many full-page) in the text; spine panel lightly tanned, other minor signs of use but very good in original light fawn pictorial cloth decorated in dark blue and white. $4400 First edition of one of the highlights of twentieth-century Australian travel literature, the highly-regarded account of a bicycle journey in the year 1907 from Sydney northwards to Burketown, then west to Port Darwin, then south to Alice Springs and Adelaide, then back to Sydney via Melbourne. This was done on a Royal Speedwell road racer, fitted with Armstrong three-speed gears, free wheel, front hub brake, and Dunlop canvas-lined tyres. ANB, 5266; not in Greenway; Mills, M87. [13] BRIGGS, Francis Stewart and Samuel H. HARRIS. Joysticks and Fiddlesticks. (The Unofficial History of a Flying Kangaroo). London, Hutchinson, [ 1936]. Octavo, pp. [x], , [2] (blank), 8 (inserted advertisements on thinner paper) + 12 leaves of plates; a very good, clean copy in original cloth, spine lettered in white. $385 First edition: personal narrative of a young Australian in the Royal Flying Corps and his subsequent experiences in the pioneer civil aviation industry in Australia, based on his flying diaries. Among his more notable flights was the first flight to Alice Springs in 1921 with Francis Birtles, who had proposed a flight to Central Australia to prepare a motion picture documentary. ANB, 06652; not in Dornbusch; Fielding and O Neill, p. 241; McLaren Aviation, 36; McLaren Air Power, 2205; McLaren Civil Aviation, 344. [14] BURDETT, Fred D. The Odyssey of a Digger. London, Herbert Jenkins Limited, Octavo, pp. 316, [4] (advertisements) + 15 leaves of plates; edges a little spotted but an excellent copy in original blue cloth with the very scarce, price-clipped, dustwrapper that is a little soiled and has small defects at the extremities. $385 First edition: one of several travel and adventure books by an almost archetypical professional adventurer. The book includes accounts of gold prospecting in the Kimberleys in 1880s and of the murder of Frank Marriot by Aborigines. Extremely scarce with dustwrapper. ANB, 7420; Bennett et al., p. 186; Greenway, [15] de SATGÉ, Oscar. Pages from the Journal of a Queensland Squatter. London, Hurst and Blackett Limited, Octavo, pp. [xii], 416, [4] (advertisements) + two folding coloured maps, many illustrations in the text (some full-page); a few trivial blemishes but a very good, bright, copy in original cloth, gilt. $1320 First edition in very good condition and scarce thus of this highly-regarded account of early squatting life in Queensland s central and western districts by a pioneer settler and explorer. ANB, 12498; Johnston-Zerner, A638. [16] DOYLE, Sir Arthur Conan. The Wanderings of a Spiritualist. London, Hodder and Stoughton n.d. but Octavo, pp. 318 (last advertisements), [2] (advertisements, verso blank) + thirteen leaves of plates; a trace of foxing, very good in original dark blue buckram, the spine lettered in gilt. $475 First edition: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle visited Australia in the course of a world tour and published this account of his travels, written in the course of the tour. The present copy has a pencil inscription (signed with undeciphered initials) on the front pastedown noting an association with Doyle Doyle s six chapters on Australia are enlivened by some acute comment and observation on Australian conditions. He also speaks approvingly of the game of Australian Rules Football (pp. 92-3), which he considered greatly superior to the rival codes of soccer and rugby (it is worth noting that Doyle had been a professional footballer himself in England):

No. 12. Lonely Lands: Through the Heart of Australia.

No. 19. Who Rides? Events in the Life of a West Australian Police Officer. The incorrect plate at page 186.

[17] GALE, John. Six Days in the Mountains of Cowley. Queanbeyan, Fallick, Gale & Co., n.d. circa Octavo, pp. [iv] (first leaf blank), 110, [2] (blank) + pink eratta slip at page 1; fine in original wrappers. $1100 A rare Canberra incunable. The only edition of Gale s early Canberra and Queanbeyan reminiscences, including the journal of an expedition into the Mountains of Cowley in the Canberra district in the early 1870s. John Gale ( ) is better known for his 1927 history of Canberra. He is also remembered for first releasing trout into the Molonglo River in collaboration with Frederick Campbell of Yarralumla in ANB, [18] GILES, Alfred. Exploring in the Seventies and the Construction of the Overland Telegraph Line. Adelaide, W.K. Thomas & Co. (The Register), Printers, n.d. but Octavo, pp. xii, three leaves of plates, and a folding map; spine little sunned but an excellent copy in original sand-grain red cloth, title and author on the front board in gilt. $4400 First edition: an inscribed and signed presentation copy of the rare and much sought issue of 50 copies in cloth (in an overall edition of 250). Giles was second-in-command of the Northern Territory expedition to fix the course of the Overland Telegraph line under John Ross, making the crossing from Adelaide to Darwin seven times. This volume expands on a series of articles Giles wrote for the Adelaide Register over 1925 and was compiled from his notebooks. ANB, 17350; McLaren, 8971; Mills, R62. [19] GRAVES, H.E. Who Rides? Events in the Life of a West Australian Police Officer. London, Lovat Dickson Limited Publishers, Octavo, pp. 288 (last blank) + twelve leaves of plates; very good in lightly used original cloth. $220 First edition: Graves was formerly Officer-in-Charge Criminal Record Office, Fingerprint and Photographic Bureau, Perth. His reminiscences cover a wide variety of cases throughout outback and urban Western Australia. The plate at page 186 (present here), after a photograph of North-west Cannibals, is said to have been suppressed in Britain after publication, presumably for the nudity rather than the slur. This may be a myth. [20] GREGORY, John Walter. The Dead Heart of Australia: A Journey around Lake Eyre in the summer of , with some account of the Lake Eyre Basin and the Flowing Wells of Central Australia. London, John Murray, Octavo, pp. xvi, leaves of plates, six folding coloured maps, and one full-page map ( Map of Lake Torrens according to Eyre and Sturt, facing page 252 but not included in the list of maps and plates); very good in the little soiled original tan cloth, the spine and front board lettered in gilt, heart-shaped photographic illustration of desert stones inset on the front board surrounded by a plain-line heart-shaped frame in gilt; top edge gilt, others uncut. Davidson copy with bookplate. $1320 First edition, the primary issue. This important book records Gregory s expedition to the Central Australian deserts of the Lake Eyre Basin with students and colleagues from the University of Melbourne. Gregory s Dead Heart Expedition was the first major scientific exploration of the new century and made important contributions to the understanding of the inhospitable region. He was the first to use the phrase Dead Heart to describe Australia s arid heartland, an expression which has since entered the language. The first issue of the first edition is extremely scarce. Printed in limited numbers (typically as few as only 800 copies of such a book would have been printed), a substantial number of the unsold sheets were re-issued with a cancel title-page in 1909 as part of Murray s Imperial Library. The number of extant copies of the 1909 re-issue on the market seem to outnumber by as much as three to one the number of copies of the primary issue, with consequently as few at two or three hundred copies of the 1906 primary issue perhaps ever distributed. ANB, 18412; Greenway, 4128; Mills, R74. [21] JACK, Robert Logan. Northmost Australia: Three Centuries of Exploration, Discovery, and Adventure in and around the Cape York Peninsula, Queensland with A study of the narratives of all explorers by sea and land in the light of modern charting, many original or hitherto unpublished documents, thirty-nine illustrations, and sixteen specially prepared maps. London, Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. Ltd., [ 1921]. Two volumes, octavo, pp. xvi (last blank), 366, [2] (blank) + eleven leaves of plates, and nine folding maps loose in a back endpocket; pp. xiv, nine leaves of plates, and eight folding maps loose in a back endpocket; occasional light spotting but an excellent copy in original dark green cloth, the spines lettered and ruled in gilt, with the rare dustwrappers. $1320 First edition: essentially a history of the exploration of Cape York, this also includes the first-hand narrative of Logan Jack s own expeditions and many other accounts otherwise unpublished. ANB, 22848; Greenway, 4971 (Australian issue only).

No. 26. In Search of El Dorado: A Wanderer s Experiences.

[22] KIRWAN, John. An Empty Land: Pioneers and Pioneering in Australia. London, Eyre and Spottiswoode, Octavo, pp. [ii] (blank), xiv (last blank), 322, [2] (blank) + 20 leaves of plates, and a map in the text; very good in original red cloth (small marks on the spine), spine gilt-lettered (later issues were lettered in black). $185 First edition: a presentation copy, signed and inscribed by the author on the front endpaper. The book begins with some historical sketches and then fairly launches into Kirwan s reminiscences of his gold mining days, shearing, Aborigines, north coastal travel, Broome and pearling, Ord river, Northern Territory, early aviation, Roeburne, Cyclones, Cossack gold field, concluding with a chapter about what to do with the Northern Territory a subject of very active debate at the time. [23] LANE, Cyril Grant. Adventures in the Big Bush: in the haunts of the Aboriginal. London, Hutchinson & Co., n.d. but Octavo, pp leaves of plates; contemporary owner s name on endpaper and front panel of dustwrapper, edges little spotted but very good in original red cloth, with edge-worn dustwrapper that has a few small repairs. $220 First edition and very scarce (especially with dustwrapper): a naturalist in far north Queensland. Dr. Lane who has travelled extensively over the vast island-continent of Australia, here gives an extremely interesting account of life amongst the Aborigines. Vivid, direct, and intimate, it is a narrative which furnishes much new and valuable information regarding the growth, customs, and rites of an underdeveloped race. The author writes of impressive personal experiences in gloom-enwrapt forests, remote crocodile-infested waterways, of numerous exciting episodes while camping, travelling, and hunting with blacks who claimed him as brother (dustwrapper blurb). ANB, 24990; Greenway, 5402; not in Johnston-Zerner. [24] [LASSETER] COOTE, Errol Hampton. Hell s Airport: The Key to Lasseter s Gold Reef. Sydney, Peterman Press, Octavo, pp leaves of plates, and a folding map; original red cloth of the first issue with red edges, the cloth faded and marked as always, a little spotting (as almost always); a very good, sound copy. $330 First edition. Coote s famous and rapidly reprinted account of the fatal 1930 Lasseter expedition, during the course of which he spent six months undertaking the aerial survey as pilot to the expedition. The foreword is by Charles Kingsford Smith. ANB, 10979; Greenway, 2307; Mills, Y48. [25] LOVE, James Robert Beattie. Stone-Age Bushmen of To-day: Life and Adventures among a Tribe of Savages in North-Western Australia. London and Glasgow, Blackie and Son, Octavo, pp. xxvi (last blank), 220, [2] (blank) + 16 leaves of plates, full-page map in the text on p. [xxv]; very good in original cloth with the very scarce dustwrapper (slight edge-wear and mild soiling), the re-order corner of the front flap clipped as usual, contemporary gift inscription on endpaper. $550 First edition: Love worked as a Presbyterian missionary for forty years among the Worona tribe of the Kimberleys and was the author of numerous anthropological articles. This more personal narrative of his experiences also incorporates much of anthropological interest in his description of Aboriginal life and customs. ANB, 26752; Greenway, [26] MACDONALD, Alexander. In Search of El Dorado: A Wanderer s Experiences. London, T. Fisher Unwin, Octavo, pp. [ii] (blank), xviii, 292 (last colophon only), [8] (advertisements) + 32 leaves of plates; very good in slightly spine-sunned pictorial cloth, top edge gilt, others uncut. $385 First edition and of considerable scarcity (rare, really) of a popular account of gold and opal mining in Western, Central and Northern Australia, Queensland, and New Guinea. Macdonald, born in Scotland in 1878, was a skilled writer as well as a keen traveller, prospector and adventurer (he even served in the Australian contingent in the Boer War). Before his relatively early death in 1939, he wrote several accounts of his own experiences as well as many popular adventure stories for boys based on his experiences. The present book is, for some reason, uncommonly scarce, unlike the quite different and more familiar second edition of This copy is one of only two we have handled (and this is the third time that we have handled it).

[27] MACDONALD, Robert M. Opals & Gold: Wanderings & Work on the Mining & Gem Fields. London, T. Fisher Unwin, Octavo, pp eight leaves of plates; very good in original cloth. $220 Extremely scarce: well-written narrative of modern-day prospecting, especially in North Queensland, Western Australia, Central Australia, and Papua New Guinea. Macdonald was a widely published writer of boy s adventure stories based on his experience of the exotic places in which he had worked. This is his one significant travel book. [28] [MACKAY, Donald] CLUNE, Frank. Last of the Explorers: The Story of Donald Mackay. Sydney, Angus and Robertson, Octavo, pp. xiv, 304 (last colophon only), [2] (blank) + 16 leaves of plates; a very good copy in the original cloth with Adrian Feint dustwrapper, top edge of the dustwrapper a little defective clear of text on the spine, and with a little general edge wear but above average for this work). $1100 First edition, much sought and extremely scarce. From a wealthy pastoral family in New South Wales, Donald Mackay was able, unlike most other explorers, to finance his own expeditions from an early age. He rode around Australia by bicycle in record time in 1899; in 1908 he led an expedition to Papua to explore the headwaters of the Purari River; and in 1926 he financed and accompanied the first of his important Northern Territory Expeditions when he travelled with Herbert Basedow by camel to the Petermann Ranges. In 1928 he and Basedow again explored in Arnhem Land. In 1931, 1933, 1935, and 1937 Mackay financed and supervised a series of aerial surveys of Central Australia, producing a series of maps far in advance of any previously available. The first of these surveys discovered the vast inland lake that was named after him by the Commonwealth government. Apart from a pamphlet account of his Papuan expedition, Mackay wrote no narrative account of any of his travels and explorations, although there were a few ephemeral and pamphlet pieces published by Basedow relating to their expeditions. Clune s book is, accordingly, something of an official account, published with Mackay s co-operation some years before his death. ANB, 9889; McLaren, [29] MELBA, Nellie (Helen ARMSTRONG, née MITCHELL). Melodies and Memories. London, Thornton Butterworth, Octavo, pp. 336 (last blank) + 32 leaves of plates; very good in original cloth. $220 First edition: very scarce. A coloratura soprano of great distinction and popularity, Helen Mitchell sang first in public at the age of six in the Richmond Public Hall, Melbourne. Born and raised in Richmond, Melbourne, in 1861, she was a proficient pianist and organist when she married Charles Nesbitt Armstrong in It was not until her marriage that she began to study singing. After appearances in Sydney and London in , and further study in Paris, she made her operatic debut in 1887 in Brussels under the stage name Nellie Melba in Verdi s Rigoletto. Over the next four decades she sang in the principal opera houses of Europe and the United States, most frequently at Covent Garden and the Metropolitan. [30] MENZIES, Leslie Robert. A Gold Seeker s Odyssey. London, John Long, Octavo, pp. 288 (first leaf and last page blank) + 8 (advertisements dated Autumn 1937) + eight leaves of plates, map in the text; fore-edge little spotted but very good in original cloth with like very scarce dustwrapper. $220 First edition of the autobiography of an adventurous prospector and entrepreneur. Born in Baltimore, USA, in 1864, Menzies had, by the time he arrived in Western Australia in 1890, joined gold rushes in California, South Africa and New Zealand (Molyneux River, Marlborough and Otago goldfields). In Western Australia he established and managed a mine on the Murchison field before discovering the rich Menzies goldfield in 1894 and founded the city which bore his name. With the wealth he won from mining he was able to retire to an apple orchard in California where he lived until his death in Like many of his fellow dry-blowers, Menzies did not publish an account of his Westralian experiences until much later. ANB, 29661; Bagnall, M1509; Greenway, [31] PECK, Harry Huntington. Memoirs of a Stockman. North Melbourne, Stockland Press, Octavo, pp. [viii] (last blank), twelve leaves of plates; near fine in original cloth, as issued without dustwrapper. $220 First edition: signed by the author on the frontispiece. Peck was born at Gisborne, Victoria, in 1860, the son of the American gold-rush entrepreneur, John Murray Peck, who was one of the founders of Cobb & Co. First published in June 1942, it was reprinted in November of the same year, and subsequently several times reprinted. He gives a lively account of Victoria s leading sheep- and cattlemen and of their properties, based on his many years experience as a stock auctioneer at the Newmarket sale yards. This red cloth issue is, we believe, a second binding. ANB,

No. 32. Cossack Gold: The Chronicles of an Early Goldfields Warden.

[32] OWEN, W. Lambden. Cossack Gold: The Chronicles of an Early Goldfields Warden. Sydney, Angus & Robertson, Octavo, pp. xii (last blank), 216, 28 (advertisements, last blank) + eight leaves of plates; a touch of pale early foxing, an uncommonly bright copy in original orange cloth, map front endpaper. $275 First edition of the reminiscences of a goldfield warden in the Pilbarra. A vivid picture of North-West Australia in the preceding half century, this is the most authoritative first-hand account of the region and its early history. One of the volumes in Angus & Robertson s small octavo series, described usually on the dustwrappers as The Real Australia in Picture and Story By Those that Know and Love It. Greenway, [33] SEARCY, Alfred. In Northern Seas. Being Mr. Alfred Searcy s Experiences on the North Coast of Australia, as recounted to E. Whitington. Adelaide, W.K. Thomas & Co., Octavo, pp. 64 (last blank) + 28 leaves of plates, and a large folding map, text printed in double-column; an excellent copy bound with the wrappers (neatly laid down) in imitation morocco, Mackaness copy with bookplate. $440 First edition. Written originally for Adelaide newspaper publication in The Register this series of articles was reprinted to promote investment in the Northern Territory, then still under the administration of South Australia. Most of the text comprises direct quotations from Searcy. Whitington s role was merely to edit and arrange them. Searcy went on to write two popular accounts of the Northern Territory and of his experiences there as an explorer, policeman and sub-collector of customs at Darwin. Searcy was later for a time Acting-Clerk of the South Australian House of Assembly. The volume includes a new edition of Thomas Gill s Bibliography of the Northern Territory of South Australia at pp The preface is by the then editor of The Register, Will J. Sowden. It is notably rare with the dustwrapper. [36] SPENCER, Walter Baldwin and Francis James GILLEN. The Northern Tribes of Central Australia. London, Macmillan and Co., Octavo, pp. xxxvi, two folding coloured plates with printed facing tissue guide plates, a folding map, three folding tables, with hundreds of illustrations (many photographic) in the text; a touch of spotting but an excellent copy, entirely uncut in the original green cloth, the spine lettered and decorated in gilt, gilt vignette on the front board.$1100 First edition of the very scarce second publication by Spencer and Gillen. This is a pleasing association copy, with the pencilled ownership inscription of prominent ornithologist J.A. Campbell, dated Armadale, 1904, on the free front endpaper. [37] SPENCER, Walter Baldwin and Francis James GILLEN. Across Australia. London, Macmillan and Co., Two volumes, octavo, pp. xvi, leaves of plates (five leaves coloured); pp. xx, (last colophon only), 4 (integral advertisements) leaves of plates (two leaves coloured), two printed tissue guide plates (facing the coloured plates), and two folding maps; a fine, bright, and firm copy in original red cloth, a trivial blemish here and there, top edges gilt, others trimmed. $3300 First edition, second impression. Spencer and Gillen s scientific expeditions in Central Australia, which resulted in a series of major scientific texts, were the beginnings of modern Australian anthropological fieldwork. Following two scientific volumes in 1899 and 1904 (see above), this narrative was published in handsome two-volume format in June An immediate success, the book went through two printings within a few months in 1912.

[38] SPENCER, Walter Baldwin. Wanderings in Wild Australia. London, Macmillan and Co., Two volumes, octavo, pp. xxviii, 456 (last colophon only) leaves of plates (eight coloured), two printed tissue guide plates (facing coloured plates VII and VIII), and three folding maps, other maps and illustrations in the text; pp. [ii] (integral blank), xiv, , [2] (integral advertisements) + 99 leaves of plates (eight coloured), and two folding maps, other maps and illustrations in the text; endpapers tanned from the boards but an excellent, bright copy in original olive-green cloth, the spines lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, with the rare dustwrappers (light wear without loss). $1850 First edition of Spencer s most literary work, the narrative of his travels with Gillen to 1912 and, after Gillen s death, alone in Central Australia as late as 1923 and As with the joint work of 1912, Across Australia, this book is a general narrative enlivened by anecdote, good-humour, and the personal reflections of a great explorer. ANB, 41644; Greenway, [39] STEWART, Nellie. My Life s Story. Sydney, John Sands [for The Author], Octavo, pp. xx, 314, [2] (blank), with very numerous plates; endpapers a little foxed but an excellent copy in original cloth, top edge gilt, others uncut, with the rare dustwrapper, lightly used. $330 First edition of Nellie Stewart s self-published autobiography, providing extensive background to Australian theatrical life in the later nineteenth century and early twentieth century. It is rare indeed with the dustwrapper. [40] STREHLOW, T.G.H. Journey To Horseshoe Bend. Sydney, Angus & Robertson, Octavo, pp. [vi], 220, [6] (blank); an excellent copy in original cloth, endpaper maps, with little edge-worn and spine-faded (as usual) dustwrapper. $330 First edition: extremely scarce. The moving record of the last journey of the author s dying father in 1922 interwoven with memories of boyhood life at Hermannsburg by one of Australia s greatest anthropologists. [41] TERRY, Michael. Across Unknown Australia. London, Herbert Jenkins, Octavo, pp. 312 (last blank), [8] (advertisements) + frontispiece portrait and 23 plates; a crisp and clean copy in bright and sharp original decorated cloth (small stain on the back board) with very good dustwrapper (clean edge-tears, triangular defect at the top of the back panel, top of spine panel defective); an attractive copy. $770 First edition of Terry s first book: rare in dustwrapper. A British-born car salesman, explorer and adventurer, Terry travelled extensively in North and North-West Australia in the 1920s and 1930s. He made several discoveries in the then still unexplored desert regions and to many he is the last Australian explorer. This volume describes his trip across Northern Australia from Longreach to Broome undertaken in 1923 with one companion, Richard Yockney, in a Ford motor car. ANB, 43851; Greenway, [42] TERRY, Michael. Through a Land of Promise: With Gun, Car and Camera in the Heart of Northern Australia... With an introduction by H.W. Gepp Chairman of the Commonwealth of Australia Development and Migration Commission. London, Herbert Jenkins Limited, Octavo, pp leaves of plates, and a folding map; very good in bright original decorated green cloth $330 First edition of Terry s richly-illustrated second book of Northern Territory exploration. ANB, 43856; Greenway, [43] TERRY, Michael. Sand and Sun: Two Gold-hunting Expeditions with Camels in the Dry Lands of Central Australia. London, Michael Joseph Ltd., Octavo, pp leaves of plates; very good in original cloth, map of the 1932 expedition on the front endpapers and of the 1933 expedition on the back endpapers, with edgeworn but entire dustwrapper. $660 First edition: signed by the author on the title-page, dated 1 October Copies of his books signed by Terry are rare on the market, while dustwrappered copies are highly uncommon. Terry s account of important explorations in Central Australia undertaken in 1932 and 1933 with Stanley J. O Grady and Benjamin E. Nicker in the country around Lake Amadeus and Lake Mackay, recently discovered by the Mackay Aerial Survey Expedition. ANB, 43855; Greenway, 9069.

[44] TERRY, Michael. Untold Miles: Three Gold-Hunting Expeditions amongst the Picturesque Border-land Ranges of Central Australia. London, Selwyn & Blount (1928) Ltd, n.d. but Octavo, pp leaves of plates, and two folding maps; very good in original green cloth (lightly marked). $880 First edition: account of Terry s three expeditions to the Petermann Ranges. This is Michael Terry s scarcest book. Greenway, [45] THOMAS, Josiah. Northern Territory of Australia. Report on Operations since the transfer to the Commonwealth. Published under the Authority of the Hon. Josiah Thomas, M.P. Minister for External Affairs. Melbourne, McCarron Bird & Co., Octavo, pp. 48, with illustrations, original wrappers, spine little worn. $165 Uncommon: a very early account of the management and development of the Northern Territory since its transfer to the Commonwealth by the state of South Australia on 1 January [46] UPFIELD, Arthur W. The Murchison Murders. Sydney, The Midget Masterpiece Publishing Co., n.d., circa mo, pp. 62, [2] (blank); fine in the original printed wrappers. $4400 A conspicuous rarity: the only edition of Upfield s detailed account of the murders committed by Snowy Rowles who imitated the method of disposing of corpses in the way that he had heard Upfield discuss when he was writing The Sands of Windee (1931). Upfield gave evidence in the trial of Rowles (real name John Thomas Smith). The account here is of particular interest for the parallels Upfield draws between the real-life detection in the Rowles case and the fictional detection he had described in The Sands of Windee. Published in the Midget Masterpiece series edited by Bernard Cronin, this tiny depression-era booklet is one of the rarest of all Upfield s works and this is an uncommonly good copy. ANB, 45578; Loder, p [47] WEBB, T.T. The Aborigines of East Arnhem Land Australia. Melbourne, Methodist Laymen s Missionary Movement, [ 1934]. Octavo, pp. 40; a fine copy in original printed wrappers. $185 First edition: scarce. Introduction by Donald Thomson. [48] WELLS, Laurence Allen. Journal of the Calvert Scientific Exploring Expedition, Perth, William Alfred Watson, Government Printer, Foolscap folio, pp. 62, [2] (blank) + a large folding map; small stain in the margin of two leaves, an excellent copy bound in work-a-day modern half morocco. $1100 Very scarce: the official account of this important expedition to explore the still unknown portions of the inland. Under the command of Laurence Allen Wells, the expedition was financed by the Albert Calvert, an active proponent of Western Australian development. Wells and six companions started from Mullewa, near Geraldton, passed through the Murchison goldfields, and headed north to the Fitzroy River. At Midway Well the party split intending to meet at Joanna Springs. Tragically, the smaller party of two men led by Wells s cousin did not arrive and were found dead five months later. The hardships endured by the explorers and the loss of two men were ill-rewarded. No great discoveries were made but the expedition did establish that most of the unknown interior was uninhabitable desert. The text of Wells s journal was not printed until this official Western Australian printing of 1902 (1200 copies). McLaren,
