Bold, J D: Fanagalo Phrase-Book, Grammar, Dictionary (Pretoria: J.L. van Schaik, 1990) 180 x 110 mm; printed wrappers; pp. 90. Wrappers a little rubbed; trace of browning. Very good condition. 'The lingua franca in common use on the mines is called Fanakalo ("like this"). It is generally considered that Fanakalo originated as a result of attempts by Indians employed in the Natal sugar industry to learn English and Zulu at the same time. The larger proportion of the vocabulary of Fanakalo is derived from Zulu, and in addition to English it also contains elements of Xhosa and Afrikaans. Whites were mainly responsible for spreading Fanakalo outside the borders of Natal to the gold and diamond mines and other industries where it soon became established as an effective means of communication between White and Black. It is not intended that Fanakalo should supersede any of the pure African languages which are always used on ceremonial occasions. In the mining industry, however, there are employees from many different language groups. Productivity and safety require every employee to avail himself of the opportunity of learning Fanakalo as rapidly as possible so as to be able to converse with other employees and to be able to give and

receive instructions correctly.' - From the Preface of 'Miners' Dictionary / Mynerswoordeboek: English/Fanakalo. Afrikaans/Fanakalo'. The use of Fanagalo is now rejected by southern Africa's indigenous inhabitants, owing to its association with a servile position in society Boon, Mike: The African Way. The power of interactive leadership (Cape Town: Zebra Press, 2001) 228 x 148 mm; laminated wrappers; pp Wrappers very slightly rubbed; few fox spots to foreedge. Very good condition. "In The African Way, Mike Boon explores the diverse African paradigms of business and life, and explains how a revolution in leadership is needed in order to accomodate this diversity. He sets about exploring what he terms the 'Now Africa': a blend of crosscultural attitudes, philosophies and behaviours unique to Africa. He introduces and explains the concept of 'African Interactive Leadership', the leadership approach required to be successful in this fascinating and complex environment. The author also outlines how the workplace can accommodate individuals who come from different backgrounds, thereby ensuring their personal fulfilment and business success." Callaway, H.: The Religious System of the Amazulu (Cape Town: Struik, 1970) Africana Collectanea Series Vol XXXV. No 342 of an edition limited to 1000 copies. Facsimile reprint of the Springdale Mission Press edition. 8vo; original black rexine, lettered in gilt on spine, with gilt publisher's device to upper cover; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. (viii) + 448; frontis. portrait; etchings. Dustwrapper a bit tanned and edgeworn; trace of foxing to edges and endpapers, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition. "This book contains much unique information formerly unknown, even to the many missionaries who worked at that time amongst the Zulus. Mendelssohn says: 'The tribal and household nature of the worship is clearly marked. It is scarcely too much to say that no savage race has ever had its mental, moral and religious conditions displayed to the scientific student with anything approaching the minute accuracy which characterises this work.... The whole range of savage life, both in the body and out, passes before us. Every kind of savage rite, from solemn ritual sacrifice to the magical scarecrow or the love-charm of a Zulu swain.'" Davies, Caitlin: The Return of El Negro (Johannesburg: Penguin, 2003) 233 x 152 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. (vi) + 260; plates. Spine sunned and wrappers very slightly so; corners slightly curled; regular browning; some foxing. Good condition. "El Negro was the name given to a southern African man whose body was stolen from his grave in the early 19th century by two respected French naturalists. The body was stuffed in the same way that trophy animals are stuffed and sent to Europe to further the cause of scientific racism and to 'entertain' the public. It eventually ended up in a glass case in a museum in a small Spanish town. In the 1990s, after a decade of protest and protracted political and diplomatic exchanges, it was finally agreed that the body be repatriated to Botswana. In October 2000, El Negro was laid to rest in a sombre state burial in Gaborone, capital of Botswana. It was then that the triumph for Africa turned sour. Although the true identity of the man has never been established, he has come to symbolise all those who were murdered, excavated and stolen from Africa by 19th century explorers and naturalists and taken to Europe in the name of science and for entertainment. In this carefully researched and immensely readable book, Caitlin Davies throws wide open the debate about what is appropriate in the name of 'science' where human remains are concerned. In the process she retraces El Negro's fateful journey to Europe, including a search for the missing grave goods without which it is believed the stolen man cannot rest in peace." 17.50

5. Durbach, Elaine (text), and John Rubython (photographs): With Mixed Feelings (Cape Town: Don Nelson, 1976) 4to; original brown boards, lettered in white on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 128; large, monochrome photographs. Dustwrapper rubbed and edgeworn; earlier owner's name scribbled over on front free endpaper; dustwrapper, endpapers and edges foxed. Good condition. "[This book] is just an account of an excursion by a White photographer and a White journalist across the barrier of their own isolation into the world of their Coloured fellow-citizens in an attempt to gain some familiarity with the people they passed on the street, sometimes worked with, but seldom encountered at home or in situations where personal views could be shared. Coloured South Africans hold a key position in the Apartheid Society, a minority without a meaningful vote and yet crucial in the evolution of the country's future. They are the people who defy the Black-White categorization. As Coloured commentators have said, they are the true South Africans, those who embody both Black and White within themselves, capable of providing either a bridge or a flashpoint.... Working separately, John Rubython captured on film what he felt was significant visually, while Elaine Durbach spoke with men and women and children, poor and wealthy, bitter and optimistic, illiterate and sophisticated, quoting what they chose to discuss with her, with all its contradictions and conflicts." Holland, Heidi: Born in Soweto. Inside the Heart of South Africa (Johannesburg: Penguin, 1994) 208 x 141 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. ix + (i) + 202; map; photographs. Trace of foxing to reverse of wrappers and outermost leaves. Very good condition. "Born in Soweto is the human story of black South Africa. It is a complex fusion of suffering and resilience, tragedy, humour and undiminished spirit. Above all, it is a moving and poignant tribute to the ordinary people of a city that has become both famous and infamous - people who have managed to keep hope alive, who remain deeply creative and enterprising, and who have made meaning of their daily struggle to survive." Nyembezi, Sibusiso: igoda. Isigaba B (Pietermaritzburg: Lincroft Books, 1983) 210 x 145 mm; wrappers; pp. 112; line drawings. Wrappers partially sunned and very slightly rubbed; trace of curl to bottom fore-corner of upper cover; occasional fox spot. Good condition. IsiZulu text. Sibusiso Nyembezi ( ) was the foremost Zululanguage writer of his era, and also worked as an educator at the Universities of the Witwatersrand and Fort Hare, before accepting an editorial post at Shuter & Shooter, the Pietermaritzburg publishers. 'IGoda' (The Rope), first published in 1963, is "the second in a series of Zulu readers intended to broaden vocabulary and deepen comprehension." AFRICAN TRAVEL & EXPLORATION 8. Fisher, Monica: Nswana - the Heir. The Life and Times of Charles Fisher: A Surgeon in Central Africa (Ndola: Printed by Mission Press, 1991) 206 x 144 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. xix + (i) + 247, incl. index; photographs; maps. Wrappers a little rubbed; trace of foxing. Very good condition. "The book serves not only as a biography of one of the great doctors in Zambia but it should be placed amongst... works for those interested in the history of Medicine in this country and for those who would like to study missionary work in this region of Africa." - From the Foreword 25.00

Jooste, Helm: Daar Doer in Duitswes (Paarl: the author, 1989) 210 x 136 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. 154; humorous illustrations; map. Single library stamp to title page; very occasional fox spot. Very good condition. Afrikaans text. Illustrations by T. O. Honiball and Allen Handley. Humorous anecdotes about life in Namibia. "Vertellinge, onder andere van dinge in Suidwes, nog voor die geboorte van Anti Sari." Manser, Riaan: Around Madagascar on my Kayak (Johannesburg: Jonathan Ball, 2010) 233 x 153 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. vii + (i) + 345; map; colour plates. Some foxing to edges and outermost leaves. Very good condition. "Riaan Manser rewrote the definition of determination when he cycled unaided over km around Africa.... Riaan set another world first in 2009 when he became the first person to circumnavigate Madagascar, the world's fourth largest island, by kayak. This incredible journey, 5000km in a little under a year, was considerably more demanding, both physically and mentally. Daily, Riaan had to conquer extreme loneliness, while ploughing through treacherous conditions such as cyclones, pounding surf and and unrelenting sun that, combined with up to ten hours in salt water, was literally pickling his body. The journey brought memorable encounters with Madagascar's marine life - humpback whales breaching metres from his path, giant leatherback turtles gliding alongside him and sharks ramming his kayak. It also brought a different kind of risk - that of arrest and imprisonment on suspicion of mercenary activity." Massmann, Ursula (compiler): Swakopmund. A chronicle of the town's people, places and progress (Swakopmund: Society for Scientific Development and Museum, Swakopmund, 1983) 220 x 150 mm; pictorial card wrappers; pp. 81; black-and-white photographs. Boards a bit rubbed, with trace of soiling to lower board; university library de-accession stamp to title page; light foxing to outermost leaves. Good to very good condition. Afrikaans text. Produced to coincide with the unveiling of the Melsetter Voortrekker Monument, this book records the treks that resulted in the settlement of Gazaland, the south-eastern part of present-day

Zimbabwe's Manicaland. Many more stunning colour photographs are included, and for the first time the text is illustrated with some five dozen black and white photographs of mountain pioneers. New maps in full colour are also included, for those who plan to explore the mighty Drakensberg." Sanderson, John: Memoranda of a Trading Trip into the Orange River (Sovereignty) Free State, and the Country of the Transvaal Boers (Pretoria: The State Library, 1981) The State Library Reprints, No vo; original red rexine, lettered in gilt on upper cover; pp. (iv) + ii + (ii) + [ ]; map. Tabler, Edward C. (editor): To the Victoria Falls via Matabeleland. The Diary of Major Henry Stabb, 1875 (Cape Town: Struik, 1967) 8vo; original brown cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; dustwrapper; endpaper map; pp. xii + 268, incl. index; plates. Trace of foxing. Very good condition. (Czech: An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books , p. 262) "Major Stabb was an officer of the 32nd Regiment (Duke of Cornwall's) Light Infantry, stationed at S. Afr. Headquarters in King William's Town. In 1875, accompanied by Capt. Glascott of the same Regiment, Major Stabb made a hunting trip through the Transvaal and Matabeleland with the Victoria Falls as their aim. They started on the 27th of March, with a wagon drawn by a span of twelve oxen, and well equipped for travel and hunting, at a cost of about 600; they were assisted by two soldier-servants, Wood and Harrison, and a wagon driver, a drunken and careless Hottentot called Scheeper. Major Stabb kept a diary during this trip, and accurately wrote down all that befell him and his companion in the course of their travels. He tells about their hunting experiences, the places they visited and the inhabitants they met. His observations on Lobengula and on the habits

and customs of the European aborigines of Matabeleland and Northern Bechuanaland have historical value." Kenneth Czech adds: "During his journey, he hunted elephant, buffalo, lion, gemsbok, and a variety of other game." Cameron, Verney Lovett: Across Africa. New Edition, With New and Original Matter and Corrected Map (London: George Philip & Son, 1885) The first single-volume London edition. 8vo; original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; pp. xxvii + (i) + 569, incl. index; numerous full-page plates, with smaller woodcuts in text; large, folding route-map in colours, housed in end-pocket. Extremities a little rubbed; backstrip slightly crumbled and worn at head and tail; front endpaper partially split along hinge; earlier owner's name signed on front free endpaper; scattered, moderate foxing; discreet archival tape reinforcing to reverse of map at junction of folds. Good condition. Landmark work of African exploration, in an attractive early edition. "After he had left his official task - to help rescue Livingstone - in the capable hands of Susi and Chuma, he struck off on his own, hundreds of miles to the west, to try to finish Livingstone's final mission, exploring the mysterious river Lualaba. On 2 November 1875, a year and a half after the funeral in Westminster Abbey, Cameron staggered down to a sandy beach near Benguela on the coast of Angola. He had failed to follow the Lualaba to the sea. Yet he was the first European ever to cross south Central Africa from east to west. And - even if he could not prove it yet - he believed he knew the answer to the last great mystery of African geography. What he discovered would have been a crushing blow to Livingstone. For all the evidence showed that the Lualaba was the Congo, not the Nile. Yet Cameron believed that the unknown source of the Congo was in fact the greatest of all Livingstone's discoveries." - Thomas Pakenham: The Scramble for Africa. "I have, in correcting the map, adhered to the positions fixed by myself, as I have seen no reason to consider, except perhaps in the case of Karema, that any more recent travellers had better means or opportunities than myself of ascertaining them, and that my training as a naval officer had, long before I dreamed of African travel, rendered me a proficient observer. In the last chapter will be found a few remarks on the vexed question of the Lukuga, and I trust that the reader will be able to follow my reasoning on the subject." - From the author's "Preface to New Edition." Stirke, D. W.: Barotseland: Eight Years among the Barotse (London: John Bale, Sons and Danielsson, [1922]) 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; pp. xii (i) ; plates; genealogical table; folding map. Cloth quite bleached; a little wear to extremities; archival tape strengthening to lower joint; occasional fox spot. Good condition. (Hosken, p. 192; Work, p. 62) D. W. Stirke served as Native Commissioner during the period. The book includes an introductory chapter by Sir Harry Johnston. "Since finishing the book the death of the Paramount Chief Lewanika has occurred, and he has been succeeded in his position by his eldest son, Yeta, who has taken the title of Yeta II. Lewanika was a man of about 70 years of age, and had a hold on his people that no Murotse chief will ever have again. He will, for generations, be remembered as the chief who did most for the

improvement and consolidation of his people. Lewanika travelled to England for the late King Edward's coronation, and it was always a great delight to him to talk about the friends he made and the sights he saw while going to, staying in, and returning from England.... Lewanika led many successful raids against the neighbouring tribe of the Mashukulumbwe, and he was the first Barotse Chief who accepted their homage and counted them as a portion of his people. He had a great belief in acquiring knowledge of other native races and chiefs, and sent embassies to Chitimukulu the Awemba Chief and to Khama the Bamangwato Chief... Lewanika was a man of most charming and courteous manners and had always a very sincere regard for Europeans, while his loyalty to the Empire has repeatedly proved itself, more especially since the beginning of the German War." - From the Author's Preface AFRIKAANS 19. "Omdat sang so 'n belangrike plek het in die verskillende bedrywighede van die Voortrekkerbeweging is dit noodsaaklik dat daar 'n sangbundel soos hierdie sal wees. Die vorige uitgawes van 1948 en 1965 wat herdrukke beleef het, het reeds ons Voortrekkers geleer om lekker saam te kan sing, en het gedien as basis vir hierdie nuwe uitgawe." - Oom Japie Hugo Marais, Eugène N.: Die Leeus van Magoeba en ander Verhale (Pretoria: J. Photographs of houses and farmsteads now largely demolished or ruined, taken at the beginning of the twentieth century (Cape Town: A. A. Balkema, 1969) Number 14 of an edition limited to 200 copies bound thus, and signed on the colophon by the author. 4to; quarter leather with cloth sides; spine tooled in compartments, with gilt lettering to second compartment; publisher's monogram in gilt to upper cover; dustwrapper; pp. (viii) + 343, incl. index; period monochrome photographs recto, with descriptive text to facing verso. Dustwrapper tanned, scuffed and worn; slight abrasion to head of spine; trace of fishmothing to cloth; endpapers a bit foxed. Good condition. "This book illustrates the historic beauty of the Cape as it still existed in the early years of the present century. Elliott had an unfailing eye for what was essential in the already diminishing remnants of the past that surrounded him, and he made a determined effort to record as much as possible before it had vanished even further.... The plates have extensive captions giving all the information possible about the subject. There are also introductory chapters on Arthur Elliott as a recorder of history, and as a photographer; and on half a century's loss of fine buildings. This is a splendid documentation in photography and text of that part of our cultural heritage that has vanished forever." Greig, Doreen E.: Herbert Baker in South Africa (Cape Town: Purnell, 1970) Number 95 of an edition limited to 2000 copies. 4to; original black rexine, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xvi + 276, incl. index; liberally illustrated in monochrome, with plans, photographs and facsimiles. Dustwrapper a bit rubbed; endpapers a little foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition. "This is a story of a man who by virtue of his personality, early upbringing and training in England was able to go out to a country that had lost its architectural tradition and whose building methods were unsound and there develop good craftsmanship and introduce new techniques of building. On this foundation he

established a pattern of architecture and numerous buildings which were not only of unusual quality in themselves, but which also, by an unusual paradox, set a pattern for architecture in other countries." An Autobiography (London: Fourth Estate, 2008) 8vo; original black boards, lettered in yellow on spine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; decorative endpapers; pp. viii Near fine condition. "For almost half a century, J.G. Ballard has been one of his country's most important writers. In this revelatory autobiography, bookended by time spent in Shanghai - the city of his childhood and internment in a WWII prison camp, and setting of his novel Empire of the Sun - he charts the course of his remarkable life." Fitzroy, V.M.: Morning's at Seven (Cape Town: Howard B. Timmins for George Allen & Unwin, no date) Author's presentation inscription to front free endpaper verso, and to title page. 8vo; original grey cloth; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 210; black-and-white line drawngs. Dustwrapper a little edgeworn, and sunned on spine panel; a little browning. Very good condition. "V. M. Fitzroy's second book opens with the picture of a lost world... a little backveld dorp in the 'teens of this century, when nearly everyone knew how to ride or drive a Cape-cart and cars were a rarity. This, however, is not a book entirely about horses, they are merely the thread on which the story is strung. It is the story of the South Africa we all know... its everyday sights and sounds, its people and its animals and and unforgettable scenery." Lessing, Doris: Under My Skin. Volume One of My Autobiography, to 1949 (London: Flamingo, 1995) 196 x 130 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. (x) (iii); plates. A little rubbed, curled and foxed; earlier owner's name on first page. Good condition. Winner of the James Tait Black Prize "This, the first volume of Doris Lessing's autobiography, begins with her childhood in Africa and ends on her arrival in London in 1949 with the typescript of her first novel, The Grass is Singing, in her suitcase.... It is already recognised as one of the great autobiographies of the twentieth century." 5.00 CAPE 29. Nordbruch, Claus: Willem Ratte - The Legend. 11 book describes 69 tracks that traverse Table Mountain, the rocky headlands of Cape Point, and the ridges, beaches, forests and coastal villages that make up Cape Town's hiking paradise. Best of all, there's a chapter presenting 33 of the Mother City's most convivial watering holes - rated according to atmosphere, value, quality of food and views - where weary hikers can wet their whistles after having worked up a sweat. Each trail entry features a concise route summary, contour map and GPS co-ordinates for the start and end points, as well as vital information outlining distance, duration, difficulty, exposure and gradient." The passion of Mr Murray's life was ships and the sea, and this took him to many parts of the world in all kinds of sea-going craft. He was the author of Ships and South Africa, the standard work on steamships of the Cape run, published in 1933, and of Union-Castle Chronicle, published in After having taken an Honours degree in History at Oxford, he was for some years sub-librarian at the Library of Parliament and, later, at the University of Cape Town. A modest man of intellectual tastes, a gift for painting, and a great delight in music, he played his part in two world wars. Home, to Marischal Murray, was always "Under Lion's Head", and for many years his friends urged him to write the history of this part of the Cape Peninsula which he knew and loved so well. Monkey Business records the murder of Anni Dewani and the incredible aftermath as told by a chorus of family, friends, lawyers, spin doctors, reporters, bloggers, politicians, cops, psychologists, even a kinky sex worker, a story that played out in the international media and on social network sites. Yet, only thirty years ago it was a bustling suburb, brimming with activity, and populated by a very cosmopolitan community. For more than a century a variety of nationalities and religions had lived in harmony in South End, respecting each other's culture, language and way of life. In 1950 that picture of peace and harmony was shattered with the passing of the Group Areas Act which decreed that people of different cultures could not live together any longer. In the 1960s the National Party government declared South End a 'white' residential suburb. Subsequently, the homes of 'nonwhites' were expropriated, the people were evicted and their entire suburb demolished. Churches, schools and sports clubs had to close; their buildings were torn down. Businesses and shops closed down; their proprietors made destitute. Streets were obliterated; landmarks and memories wiped out. The people of South End were dispersed and resettled in an area to the north of Port Elizabeth. The heart was ripped out of 'old' South End. In its place came a 'new' South End - rows upon rows of uninspiring townhouses, up-market 'yuppie' pads, luxury complexes, and re-named streets, and a brand-new set of residents. South End 'as we knew it' was not more. This book has tried to re-capture the essence of 'old' South End, to refresh tired memories, and provide former residents of South End with an opportunity to tell their children what life was like in South End, long, long ago... Good condition. (Mendelssohn I, pp ) 'It is stated that the first information respecting the rising was communicated to Mr. S. N. G. Jackson, the acting Native Commissioner at Belingwe, by Mr. Fynn, acting Native Commissioner at Inseza, who advised Mr. Jackson to consult with Captain Laing, and to get all the prospectors to concentrate at the Belingwe store for purposes of defence. Captain Laing, who had served in the Matabele War (1893) as a lieutenant, took immediate steps to call the men in from the various camps, and when they had arrived a meeting was held, and it was resolved that he should be appointed O.C., with Sir Frederick Frankland as lieutenant and second in command. Vigorous defence operations were soon carried out; unfortunately, however, Mr. Jackson had refused to disarm the native police, who deserted at the first opportunity. The Belingwe garrison consisted of forty-four white officers and men, ten Cape Boys, and fifteen Zambesis, and the author gives great praise to these men for their conduct throughout the campaign. There is an account of a march through the country occupied by the enemy to meet reinforcements sent from Tuli by Mr. Rhodes, the force under Captain Laing having been augmented by a party of friendly Basutos. The combined troops had several engagements with the enemy, who fired the

Bush, thereby endangering the whole column, which was only preserved by the energy and resource of the men, who burnt a large belt of bush about one hundred yards outside the laager, keeping the fire in check from inside. The author remarks, "This was accomplished not a moment too soon, and a roaring mass of flames about three miles long, twenty yards broad, and three feet high swept past our position with a noise like a river in flood.... Every one knew we had had one of the narrowest escapes possible." ' - Mendelssohn MINING 47. Gray, James: Payable Gold. Dustwrapper and top edges of boards very slightly rubbed; trace of foxing. Very good condition. "In this book, artist Joan van Gogh illustrates the magnificent trees and shrubs of the Witwatersrand, Magaliesberg and Pilanesberg - a highly populated area, long-neglected by botanical writers, yet surprisingly rich in its indigenous tree life. The 150 vivid and accurate colour paintings are supplemented by field data, carefully compiled over the past fifteen years by Joan van Gogh and leading palaeobotanist, Dr John Anderson of the Botanical Research Institute. The text covers the characteristic features of the bark, leaves, fruit and flowers of each of the 159 indigenous species known to occur in the area. The accounts include distribution and habitat maps; habit sketches; an indication of the plant's height and items of general interest." 7.50

66. Maclean, Gordon & Cherie (text), with Heinrich, Philip & Ingrid van den Berg (photography): Southern Africa's Beautiful Deserts. The Big Picture (Pietermaritzburg: HPH Publishing, 2005) Collectors' Edition, limited to 100 numbered copies, signed by all five authors. 4to; brown half morocco with marbled boards; spine tooled in compartments, with gilt-on-green lettering piece to second compartment; cloth-sided slipcase, with marbled edges and pictorial onlay to centre of upper board; pp. 208; lavishly illustrated in full colour with the Van den Bergs' celebrated photographs; map. Fine condition. A remarkable production, the collectors' edition produced to the very highest standards of craftsmanship. "Life on Earth cannot exist without water, yet deserts abound with life. An astonishing diversity of animals and plants have evolved extraordinary and often bizarre ways of surviving in the desert. Where rainfall is scarce and erratic, these organisms cannot always rely on it for biological events, such as breeding, and have had to adapt in other ways. The region designated in this book as 'desert' includes the Namib, the Succulent Karoo, the Nama Karoo and the Arid Savanna. The lastmentioned is also called the Kalahari and is the more arid part of southern African savanna, covering about 46% of southern Africa." SOUTH AFRICAN HISTORY 67. Alexander, Neville: Robben Island Dossier (Cape Town: UCT Press, 1994) 205 x 144 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp A little underlining noted (p. 38). Very good condition. 'Neville Alexander's Dossier was originally written as a report to various international organisations to highlight the harsh and inhumane conditions on Robben Island at the time of his incarceration. It captures the essence of "that very special prison" that housed so many of the men who shaped the Liberation Struggle. Published twenty years after Alexander's release from Robben Island, it is a stark reminder of the grim days of retribution during apartheid's darkest period.' Boucher, Maurice: Spes in Arduis. A history of the University of South Africa (Pretoria: University of South Africa, 1973) 8vo; original brown boards, lettered in white on spine; dustwrapper; pp. (viii) + 407, incl. index; numerous photographs; colour illustrations of coats-of-arms. Dustwrapper slightly edgeworn and foxed, with trace of fishmothing; slight bump to bottom fore-corners; gift inscription to fly-leaf; occasional fox spot. Very good condition. "The University of South Africa has compiled this record of its history as part of its centenary celebrations. It is really more than just its own history. The University of South Africa, formerly the University of the Cape of Good Hope, is the oldest degree-conferring institution in the Republic and until 1918 was in fact our only university. Its early history is thus to a great extent the history of higher education in South Africa as a whole. It will not therefore surprise the reader if the first chapters of this account reflect a wider view of educational developments than those which follow. On the other hand it must be remembered that as a modern university with a unique method of teaching the University of South Africa is of very recent date. For that reason considerable emphasis has been placed upon the rapid expansion of facilities in the last few decades." 6.50

69. Coetzee, J. J.: Handbook on Union Statute Laws and Specimen Indictments for Guidance of Members of the South African Police (Pretoria: [printed by] Afrikaanse Pers, [1932]) 8vo; original blue cloth, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; pp. (viii) Boards somewhat bumped and worn, with some fishmothing to cloth; ownership inscription of earlier owner (a Constable T C Goosen based in Bathurst, Eastern Cape) to front free endpaper and fore-edge; sporadic, moderate foxing. Good condition. Uncommon: Besides South African libraries holding this title, OCLC locates only the British Library copy. Useful publication intended for members of the South African Police Force employed at remote outposts, dealing with matters as wide-ranging as laws on explosives to the possession of liquor by Africans, including such brews as Skokiaan, Qediviki, Hopana, Isityimiyana, Uhali, and so forth. "This book has been compiled in order to assist and to place within the reach of members of the Force some facility of reference to the many Statutory Enactments against which contraventions are of frequent occurrence.... The book includes all those Statutes as set out in the syllabus for Police Promotion Examinations. The specimen indictments will no doubt be of great assistance to those members of the Force acting as Public Prosecutors." Coetzer, Piet: Allan Hendrickse, Verhoorafwagtende (Alberton: Librarius Felicitas, 1984) 174 x 112 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. 206; some photographs and facsimiles. Light browning to edges. Very good condition. Afrikaans text. Hutton, Barbara: Robben Island - Symbol of Resistance (Johannesburg: SACHED Books / Cape Town: Mayibuye Books, 1994) 247 x 183 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. 87; liberally illustrated. Very good condition. "Robben Island has a unique place in South Africa's history. For more than four centuries it has been a place of banishment, exile and imprisonment. Since the 1960s the island has become an international symbol: of the brutality of apartheid on the one hand, and of human dignity and the struggle for political freedom on the other. Written in a lively and easy-to-read style with lots of photographs and illustrations, Robben Island - Symbol of Resistance traces the fascinating and varied history of Robben Island." Leach, Graham: South Africa. No easy path to peace (Johannesburg: Century Hutchinson, 1986) 8vo; original black boards, lettered in gilt on spine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xxi + (i) + 266, incl. index; plates; maps. Dustwrapper sunned on spine panel, a bit foxed and edgeworn, with archival tape repair of tear to top edge; earlier owner's name scribbled over on front free endpaper; light foxing to endpapers.

Good condition. "South Africa combines lively reporting from the front line with an explanation of some of the history of this troubled land, and also assesses future political and social trends. It looks at the chances for a hopeful outcome to South Africa's problems, if only because - as the South African writer Alan Paton puts it - 'One has to be optimistic, because to be pessimistic about South Africa does not bear thinking about.'" Marais, David: Europeans Only. A Collection of Cartoons (Cape Town: Jan Botha Publishers, 1960) 137 x 213 mm; pictorial wrappers; unpaginated (but pp. 128); full-page cartoon illustrations, with captions. Wrappers slightly rubbed; crease to top fore-corner of upper cover; moderate foxing. Good condition. "In a country where politics have assumed the role of a major industry there is a special need for politicians to develop an ability to laugh at themselves.... Marais... has a natural and superb gift for cutting through pomposity and getting down to the crux of the matter." - From the Foreword, by Harry Lawrence, M.P Omar, Ismail: Reform in Crisis. Why the Tricameral Parliamentary System has failed (Johannesburg: Jonathan Ball Publishers, 1988) 209 x 137 mm; laminated wrappers; pp. v + (i) Very good condition. "In particular, his balanced account of the strength and weaknesses of opposition groups such as the ANC and UDF brings a dimension into the political debate which is often completely ignored. His urgent call for a total transformation of the existing constitutional dispensation and a drastic overhaul of the government reform measures is both timely and extremely compelling." - Marinus Wiechers, Professor of Constitutional Law, UNISA Park, Yoon Jung: A Matter of Honour. Being Chinese in South Africa (Johannesburg: Jacana, 2008) 234 x 154 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. x + 220, incl. index; plates, incl. full colour. Slight crease to bottom fore-corner of upper cover. Very good condition. "Throughout much of the history of this most race-conscious country, the South African Chinese community has been ignored or neglected, and during apartheid were officially classed along with Coloureds (people of mixed race) or with Indians in that particularly South African category of Asiatic. More recently, as China's aid, trade and investment in Africa grow and large numbers of new Chinese immigrants stream into South Africa and other African states, Chinese South Africans are beginning to receive both media and scholarly attention. For this reason, it is timely to focus on the only resident community of Chinese on the continent." Pogrund, Benjamin: Sobukwe and Apartheid (Johannesburg: Jonathan Ball, 1990) 233 x 155 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. (x) + 406, incl. index; plates. Edges a little foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition. "Thirty years ago, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe led a mass defiance of the pass laws of South Africa. He persuaded blacks to present themselves at police stations and demand arrest. A determinedly non-violent protest turned to tragedy when police opened fire on a crowd, killing 69. It was 21 March 1960 at Sharpeville and Sobukwe's last day of liberty. The protest was a turning point: Afrikaner rule stiffened and black resistance went underground. International opinion hardened against apartheid. Sobukwe, leader of the Pan-Africanist Congress, was jailed for three years

for incitement. At the end of his sentence the Government, so fearful of his power, influence and intellect, rushed through the 'Sobukwe Clause' to keep him in jail, year by year. For the next six years Sobukwe was kept in near solitary confinement on Robben Island, rejecting any compromise with white authority. After nine years in jail Sobukwe was released into banishment and house arrest in the small town of Kimberley. He died there nine years later, in February This book is the story of a remarkable man. It is also the story of the friendship between Robert Sobukwe and Benjamin Pogrund whose joint experience and passionate debates chart the course of a tyrannous regime and the development of concerted black resistance." Pollak, Joel B.: The Kasrils Affair. Jews and Minority Politics in Post-Apartheid South Africa (Cape Town: Juta, 2009) 210 x 138 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. x + 198, incl. index. Very good condition. "In 2001, on the heels of the disastrous Durban racism conference and the terror attacks of 11 September 2001 in the United States, South African cabinet minister Ronnie Kasrils launched a declaration calling on South Africans of Jewish descent to protest against Israeli policies towards the Palestinians. In so doing, he launched a furious debate within the Jewish community. The debate caused the leadership of the Jewish community to shift its political strategy, from the politics of open debate towards the politics of influence. The Jewish experience resembled that of other minorities and interest groups whose leaders came to be seen as 'representing government in their respective communities rather than the community addressing themselves to government', in the words of historian Hermann Giliomee." Shain, Milton: The Roots of Antisemitism in South Africa (Johannesburg: Witwatersrand University Press, 1994) 228 x 152 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. x + (ii) 203, incl. index; caricatures. Slight crease to top fore-corner of lower cover. Very good condition. "Although South Africa is universally regarded as a metaphor for racism and bigotry, there has been surprisingly little scholarly focus on antisemitism in that society. Historians of South African Jewry have depicted antisemitism in the 1930s and early 1940s as essentially an alien phenomenon, a product of Nazi propaganda at a time of great social and economic trauma. Milton Shain argues that antisemitism was an important element of South African society long before Using previously unmined sources, such as novels, plays, caricatures, and even jokes, he demonstrates that the roots of the anti-jewish outbursts of the 1930s and early 1940s are to be found in a widely shared negative stereotype of the Jew that had evolved from the late nineteenth century." Willan, Brian: Sol Plaatje. A Biography (Johannesburg: Ravan Press, 1984) 233 x 155 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. xi + (i) + 436, incl. index; map; plates. Spine sunned and wrappers very slightly so; corners of wrappers slightly curled; trace of foxing. Good condition. "Author, journalist, political spokesman and leader of his people - Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje was one of the most gifted and versatile men of his generation. He devoted his many talents to one overriding cause: the struggle of the African people against injustice and dispossession in the years that saw South Africa transformed from a colonial backwater into an industrial state. He is best known today as the author of two books: Native Life in South Africa, a scathing indictment of the Natives' Land Act of 1913, one of the most far-reaching pieces of legislation in South African history; and Mhudi, the first novel in English to be written by a black South African. This extensively illustrated biography tells the story of Plaatje's remarkable life for the first time. The early years - his childhood on a German mission station in the Cape Colony of the 1880s and '90s, his first job as a messenger with the

Post Office in the diamond town of Kimberley - culminate in his work as a court interpreter for the British military authorities at the famous siege of Mafeking. As the new century began, the political struggle came to dominate Plaatje's life. He was the first secretary of the African National Congress. Political campaigning took him to Britain where he met Lloyd George, and to the United States, where he met black leaders like Marcus Garvey and W.E.B. Du Bois. He spent the last years of his life in South Africa, devoting himself to the preservation of the Tswana language and literature." SOUTH AFRICAN LITERATURE 80. Beeton, Ridley: Facets of Olive Schreiner (Johannesburg: Ad. Donker, 1987) 200 x 130 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp Wrappers foxed and very slightly curled; foxing to edges and outermost leaves. Good condition. "Olive Schreiner always had an effect on people - no-one who encountered her was afterwards neutral about her. She was adored or thoroughly loathed. In this collection of letters, diaries and other manuscript sources, Ridley Beeton integrates her warmth and arrogance, her anger and love, her brilliance and contrariness into a comprehensive portrait of Olive Schreiner the woman and writer. The emotional/intellectual entanglements with Karl Pearson, Edward Carpenter and Havelock Ellis are extensively covered. The facets presented are based on primary sources held at research centres, and are linked by notes which give further information about the people who influenced her, or under whose guidance she worked." Campbell, Roy, with William Plomer and Laurens van der Post (editors): Voorslag. A Magazine of South African Life and Art. Facsimile Reprint of Numbers 1, 2 and 3 (1926) (Pietermaritzburg: University of Natal Press / Durban: Killie Campbell Africana Library, 1985) With an Introduction and Notes by Colin Gardner and Michael Chapman. 8vo; original black boards, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. x (ii) + 64, (ii) + 68, (ii) (x), [27-84], incl. index; some monochrome illustrations. Dustwrapper somewhat rubbed, and a little edgeworn; some spotting to edges and endpapers, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition. "The literary journal Voorslag was produced in mid- 1926, near Durban, by the then youthful Roy Campbell, William Plomer and Laurens van der Post, all of whom were subsequently to establish themselves among South Africa's most prominent writers. Disagreements between Campbell and the sponsors of Voorslag soon led to the resignation of the young authors; but not before the first three issues, under their editorship, had provoked immediate controversy in artistic and journalistic circles.... As Colin Gardner and Michael Chapman say in their introductory essay: 'Voorslag had the courage to enter the realms of serious and probing questioning on matters of art, human feeling and society. It is the substance, temper and tone of its involvement which this facsimile edition seeks to convey and re-create for present-day readers and students of South African literature.'" Merrington, Peter: Zebra Crossings. Tales from the shaman's record (Johannesburg: Jacana, 2008) 234 x 154 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. (vi) Very good condition. "Cross Alexander McCall Smith with Philip Pullman and a hefty dose of Zakes Mda and you could get a sense of what travelling in Merrington's South Africa is like. Follow the exploits of the sangoma Malibongwe Ngingingini as he moves through the light and dark realms of consciousness with his beloved apprentice Anna. Their task is to heal, which they do in ever more inventive forms as they travel the highways and byways of South Africa and further afield. You won't be left untouched." 7.50

83. Wilhelm, Peter: The State We're In (Johannesburg: Ravan Press, 1999) 220 x 150 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. (vi) Slightest curl to bottom fore-corners; trace of foxing to fore-edge. Very good condition. "Launched upon unsuspecting readers in April 1997, Peter Wilhelm's acutely satirical column in the Financial Mail looks at a world turned inside-out and upside-down. It does so with brevity, wit, erudition, surrealism and force.... We learn of the joys of the Cape's slivovitz industry; of the sock-eating habits of dogs; and of the necessity of lies to the social order." Williams, Michael: Who killed Jimmy Valentine? (Cape Town: Oxford University Press, 2008) 210 x 136 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp Wrappers very slightly creased. Very good condition. "When the body of a young musician is found on the top of an abandoned taxi, it appears that he is the latest victim of the taxi war. The murder provokes outrage from the local community, for whom Jimmy Valentine was a symbol of hope. The task of solving the case falls to Jake Mulligan, a new recruit to the Cape Town Murder and Robbery Unit. As his investigation progresses, Jake enlists the help of a journalist, Kate Edwards. Together they find out that there's more to the case than meets the eye. Could Jimmy's girlfriend have the answer?" 7.50 SPORT 85. Adamson, Steve: The Complete A to Z of Scarborough Football Club (Scarborough: Scarborough FC Supporters Club, 2004) 206 x 145 mm; pictorial wrappers; unpaginated (but pp. 129); photographs of teams, games, players and programmes, some of which in colour. Very good condition. Uncommon. Scarborough Football Club, which enjoyed a period in the Football League between the late 1980s and late 1990s, was dissolved within a few years of the publication of this book, produced to coincide with the club's 125th Anniversary Season. A new club, Scarborough Athletic, which plays in the eighth tier of English football and retains the Seagull badge of Scarborough FC, continues the tradition Hill, Alan: Herbert Sutcliffe. Cricket Maestro (London: Simon & Schuster, 1991) 8vo; original maroon boards, lettered in gilt on spine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. (viii) + 280, incl. index; photographs. A little foxing to edges, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition. "A national hero in his playing days, Herbert Sutcliffe belongs to the select band of all time cricketing greats. This first full-length biography of the Yorkshire and England batsman charts his extraordinary transformation from cobbler's apprentice to urbane gentleman, and one of the coolest, most determined and technically accomplished practitioners the game has ever known.... This vivid and authentic portrait of one of the all-time cricketing greats is enhanced by many unpublished photographs and a full statistical record of Sutcliffe's career." Mackie, Traci: Feel It Forever FIFA World Cup South Africa, Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth: Yithethe maafrika, 2011) Oblong 4to; laminated pictorial boards; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 144; full-colour photographs; corresponding DVD in sleeve mounted to front pastedown. Fine condition. "This book on the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa in Nelson Mandela Bay is presented with a sense of nostalgia. It is an

attempt to keep the memory alive of what transpired leading up to and during the event in our city. The magnitude, complexity and intricacies of being one of the host cities to the biggest, most popular, single sporting event in the world, was only really comprehended and understood by those in the engine room. Eight games were played in Nelson Mandela Bay. Sixty-four matches were broadcast worldwide over 31 days... and Nelson Mandela Bay was part of it." Partridge, Ted: A Life in Rugby (Johannesburg: Southern, 1991) 8vo; original pale blue boards, lettered in white on spine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xiii + (i) + 161; plates. Lamination lifting very slightly to top edge of dustwrapper. Very good condition. 'Danie Craven is one of the few men the world of rugby can truly call a living legend. As President of the South African Rugby Board he has guided the fortunes of South African rugby for the past 35 years, and his influence on the international board has made his a name to be reckoned with all over the world. When, in 1956, he found himself elevated from the floor of the SARB to be its leader, "Doc", as he is affectionately known, decided that to lead the game honestly he was going to conduct himself with great strength and dedication. He has not failed in the credo he set himself and today he is still unchallenged as the game's great thinker and originator of most of its innovative law changes.' Terblanche, Stan, and Gerhard Burger: Crusader Rugby Club (Port Elizabeth: Crusader Rugby Club, 2012) Signed by the authors on the title page. 4to; original red rexine, lettered in gilt on spine and upper cover; onlay of club crest in relief to upper board; pictorial endpapers; pp. 160; profusely illustrated with pictures of players, administrators and teams, and of the Crusader ground, which hosted test matches. Loosely inserted is a numbered ticket/programme for the Club's Anniversary Dinner. Near fine condition. Exceedingly uncommon, attractive limited-edition publication produced to mark the 125th anniversary of the Crusader Rugby Club, which has produced at least thirty Springbok players down through the years, besides those - such as England's Mike Catt - who went on to represent other countries WORLD TRAVEL 90. van Rensburg, Frikkie, and Herman le Roux: Vrystaaat! 100 jaar van hardlooprugby. Die ontstaan en geskiedenis van Vrystaatse rugby (Bloemfontein: Sponsored publication, 1995) 4to; pictorial boards; pp. 822; liberally illustrated in monochrome and full colour; advertisements. Boards a little rubbed; binding a touch slack. Very good condition. Afrikaans text. Monumental centenary history of the Free State Rugby Union, whose players have, as supporters of the Cheetahs can attest, always been renowned for the running rugby alluded to in the title Reid, Anthony (compiler): Witnesses to Sumatra. A Travellers' Anthology (Kuala Lumpur: Oxford University Press, 1995) 196 x 124 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. xiii + (i) + 314; map; monochrome illustrations. Fine condition. "Sumatra was a great

island of mystery to travellers. The first South-East Asian landfall of sailors from the West since Roman times, it was called 'Gold Land' before Java and the other Indonesian islands had become known outside eastern Asia. Even if nobody in Europe believed Marco Polo's account of peopleeaters he encountered there, he revealed the wonders of the island before any other part of the region. Yet, while Sumatra's coasts exported pepper, gold, and camphor to the world, its heart remained a secret, peopled by savage cannibals or by glittering empires, depending on the point of view. Each time an intrepid European travelled over the mountains to the highland plateaus of the Batak and Minangkabau, he believed he was discovering a Shangri-La of unknown civilization. This volume presents the most dramatic accounts of adventurers of many lands. Taken together, they represent an unprecedented journey through Sumatran history through the eyes of outsiders who were often the sole recorders of the island's upheavals." Thorlichen, Gustavo: La República Argentina (Buenos Aires: Nuestro Pabellón, 1958) Small 4to; original dark brown-and-white natural cowhide; nylon endpapers; pp (vi), incl. index; evocative monochrome photographs with commentary, captions and prologue by Jorge Luis Borges in Spanish, German, French and English. A little wear to cover; discreet archival tape reinforcing to upper hinge; occasional small fox spot. Good condition. "The picturesque is the exception in this country and we as Argentine do not feel it. Hence the difficulty of grasping in a limited series of images these farouche and almost abstract realities, hence the singularity of the achievement which Thorlichen has brought off with clarity, fervour and good luck." - Jorge Luis Borges 15.00
