3 Broward Estates Courageous Characters Read-a-Thon: Mystery Guest Readers will read a book highlighting positive character traits of civil rights icons in history past and present to students in grades Pre-K through Second Plot Summary Challenge: Students will make a 10 second presentation that summarizes the plot/theme of a fables/fairytales/folktales: The presentation make consist of the following: oral presentation, video presentation, rap, song, dance, visual art, slideshow of photos with voiceover, drawing with short summary, etc. Select students from each grade level will be chosen to present their summaries at the Black History Program in February. Storytelling with African Research Librarians: Students will listen to African American Folktales read orally and then create their own folktales to be shared on WBEE News Morning Show. BEES MLK Dream Speech Contest: Students will write a speech similar to that of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Students will share their speeches at the 21st Century Black History Program. BEEHIVE Character Trivia: Students will dress as their favorite book character. The best dressed book character will receive an invitation to have lunch bunch with the Principal and Assistant Principal. Students will share their book characters with administration. C. Robert Markham D.E.A.R Time At 2:30 pm there will be a call announcing D.E.A.R. (Drop everything and read time). Students will read a book of their choice independently for 10 minutes. Community Guest Readers A variety of guest will come throughout the day to read to our students. AM for Primary; PM for Intermediate K-2 Book Character Day! Grades K-2 will select a book character and dress up as this character. They will read their books throughout the day in their classrooms. Barnes and Nobles Parent Night Markham families are invited to Barnes and Nobles to purchase books to add to their home libraries. 3-5 Vocabulary Day! Grade 3-5 will choose a word and create posters or dress up representing the word. Door Contest Each grade level will decorate their classroom door with the theme: Find Yourself in a Book. Prizes will be awarded for the winning classes.

Unusual Book Day - The students will be encouraged to bring along a book with differences - an old book or a very small book, a book in another language, a book signed by an author, a book with unusual illustrations or some other distinguishing feature. Dress Up like your favorite storybook character. Please carry your book with you. Coral Cove Teachers will kick off with a Read Aloud on the book their class will be showcasing during the Friday Literacy Parade. Students will create props/costume for the character they choose and relate to from the class book. Students will eat a food/snack or complete an activity featured in the story. Parent Night Pelican U: parents will learn how to promote literacy skills at home. Coral Cove Literacy parade: students will participate in the Literacy parade to showcase their props/ costume and ideas on how they found themselves in a book.

6 Country Isles Prepare for author in Residence and Storyteller, Carrie Sue Ayvar. Ms. Ayvar, a nationally renowned Master Storyteller, will present to the students and will be sharing her presentation with students at Walker Elementary through a Distance Learning experience. During the month of January, Country Isles' families will be donating new pajamas and books to share with each kindergarten student at Walker Elementary. Student Council members will be organizing the pajamas and books to distribute to these students. Welcome Award Winning Performance Artist, Carrie Sue Ayvar. Ms. Ayvar has been connecting curriculum, people, languages and cultures in both English and Spanish for over thirty years. Through her grandfather's teaching, she believes that If you don t know the trees, you may be lost in the forest, but if you don t know the stories, you may be lost in life. Ms. Ayvar will be sharing a special presentation with our students in grades K-2 and 3-5. She will visit our Dual Language classrooms and share her stories with students at Walker Elementary through a Distance Learning experience. Student Council will continue to organize donated pajamas and storybooks to distribute to each kindergarten student at Walker Elementary. Schoolwide D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) time. Students and staff will spend 20 minutes reading silently as they continue to celebrate literacy. Student Council members will deliver pajamas and storybooks to the kindergarten students at Walker Elementary. Country Isles Elementary is reaching out to kindergarten students so that we can support literacy as we "Find Yourself in a Book" and provide "Sweet Dreams to the students at Walker Elementary. 7 Cypress Screen Free Challenge: Students are encouraged to turn off electronics and turn on books! A reading log will go home with each student. Kids can wear their pajamas, and their favorite slippers or socks. They can bring in blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals as they share their favorite book. Deerfield Beach "Snowy Day Read In" (PTA Sponsored) - PTA will be providing hot chocolate, marshmallows, and a book for each child. The students will DROP everything and read curled up with a blanket, sipping hot chocolate with a good book. Buddy Reading amongst students. Short Constructed Responses will be utilized as the accountability piece when the students have completed their reading. Going Fruity for Books - Students bring a book to the cafeteria during lunch to read while they enjoy a banana or any type of fruit. "Thinking Maps Thursday": Score with Books - Students wear their favorite team shirt or jersey to show support for literacy week. Students may read and discuss texts related to sports and create Thinking Maps to display their critical thinking related to the texts. Book Swap ~ Kids and teachers can bring their favorite book to school and do a swap for the day. Community Involvement ~ Share reading with others in the community. Talk to the students about donating books throughout the communities. We can also pair up and have book buddies in order for proficient readers to help young readers develop and practice great reading skills. Poem In Your Pocket ~ Students all have to come with a poem of their choice in their pocket and can be asked at any given time to produce the poem and read it to their classmates or teacher. Some students also read their poems to the whole school over the intercom system. Book Report ~ Report on a favorite book via a book report, multimedia format, a poster, or any other creative way to share with the class.

11 Gulfstream Academy of Hallandale Beach K-8 Harbordale Open the Door to Reading: Decorate your classroom door as a book (Contest). Literacy Trivia D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) Achieve at AR Reading Challenge Rolled out on WHBD! Grade K-5 students will be entered into a drawing for each quiz they take with a passing score at their ability level. K students not on AR can earn a ticket for a completed and logged blue pouch book. There will be a K-2 and 3-5 box. WAR: Write About Reading & Character Shirt Day Listen to the Principal read during Morning announcement and write about it. Literacy Trivia Literacy Project Due (Contest) D.E.A.R. Time Book Reviews Back again by popular demand, students will get to rate and write reviews books recently read. Students in all grade levels will draft, revise, and edit an independent writing activity that relates back to the text and the standard using the Literacy Continuum and Florida Standards. Students will publish, illustrate, and share their projects. 17 Nova Blanche Forman N/A Our fourth graders will be doing a vocabulary parade in the afternoon. Each student will dress up as a vocabulary term. The entire school will take part in a "Drop Everything and Read" event. EVERYONE will be reading during that half hour in the afternoon. We will be hosting a parent literacy night that evening. N/A Nova Eisenhower Drop Everything and Read- Students will carry a book with them at all times during the day. Announce it's DEAR time 4-5 times throughout the day. At that time, everyone, no matter what must stop and read their book for 10 minutes in order to build excitement for the week. The Snowman: Play the movie first thing in the morning on Nova News. The teachers will brainstorm with their class to come up with small phrases or sentences appropriate for their assigned letters. Book Buddy Day: Each primary class will be paired up with an intermediate class to read together somewhere around the school.
