1 AMBIO: A Journal of the Human Environment Published by: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences Author Guidelines N.B. Only manuscripts that comply with the AMBIO in-house style will be considered for publication. Papers that do not meet the criteria outlined in these Instructions may be summarily rejected. EDITORIAL POLICY AMBIO is an international journal publishing recent work in the interrelated fields of ecology, environmental management, technology and natural sciences. AMBIO publishes papers of high scientific standard in a form that is comprehensible not only to specialists, but also to scientists in other fields, to students, politicians, professional planners, and interested laymen. All manuscripts submitted to Ambio are accepted for consideration with the understanding that they have not been published elsewhere and are not under consideration by any other journal. However, papers that have been reproduced elsewhere, for very limited distribution, may be submitted. All papers submitted should be accompanied by an introductory letter. AMBIO has no page charges. Manuscript Submission Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all coauthors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities tacitly or explicitly at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation. Permissions Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors. Online Submission Authors should submit their manuscripts online. Electronic submission substantially reduces the editorial processing and reviewing times and shortens overall publication times. Please follow the hyperlink Submit online and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen. Use double-spacing throughout the text. The article should be submitted as Word, RTF, or TXT file for text and TIFF, EPS, GIF, JPEG or PPT for figures with a minimum resolution of 600 dpi. PEER REVIEW All articles and reports are peer reviewed by at least two referees. The author should suggest 5 potential referees who are qualified to judge the work objectively, providing full names, institutions, and current addresses. Papers published in AMBIO fall into three main categories: Articles, Reports, and Synopses.

2 ARTICLES An AMBIO article should summarize and examine in depth one or more important aspects of an environmental subject of current significance. It should review and present the subject in perspective, with reference to the most recent literature. Article manuscripts can be typewritten, doublespaced pages in length (about 5000 words), excluding references, and include Keywords, 4-5 Figures, up to 2 Tables, and an Author Biography. REPORTS Reports should present the results of current environmental research. A report must be an original piece of work, devoted to new findings and results. The subject should be clearly introduced with nonspecialists in mind. Reports can be double-spaced typewritten pages in length (about 3500 words) and have 4-5 Figures and 2-3 Tables. Reports should be organized as follows: Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, References and Author biography. SYNOPSES AMBIO s synopses are short papers on current environmental news or ongoing projects. Synopses can be up to 10 double-spaced typewritten pages (maximum 2000 words). NB: AMBIO synopses are not peer reviewed. Synopses do not have an Abstract, Keywords and Author Biography, and should include no more than 2 Figures and 1 Table. MANUSCRIPT FORMAT A complete article or report manuscript must be written in American English and include: Title Page, Main text of article with Headings, References and Notes, Illustrations and/or Tables with legends, Abstract, Keywords and a brief Biography for each author with full name, address, and . All manuscript files should be formatted to contain line numbers. Title Page The title page must contain the full name, position and institutional mailing address of the author(s), the title, and number of words in the text. The name of the corresponding author with mailing address, fax, telephone number and address. Abstracts A short abstract, consisting of not more than 150 words, should be submitted on a separate page. An article abstract should indicate the scope and the main points of the article. A report abstract should indicate the scope of the report, the methods used, and main results. Synopses do not have an abstract. Keywords Provide 4 to 6 keywords which can be used for indexing purposes. Author Biography A brief biography should be included for Articles and Reports. Example: [Name of Author] is a [Professor/Associate Professor, doctoral candidate, etc.] at the [name of University/Institute]. His research interests include [example: political ecology and political economy of aquaculture development]. His present address is: Numerals and Units of Measure Use thousand million instead of billion or use 109. Run together numbers with up to 4 digits (1500); indicate numbers with more than 4 digits as follows: or Use the decimal point: 1.25.

3 Metric and Celsius units must be used. Use the expression: km hr-1 not km/hr or km per h, g L-1 not gm per liter. Convert currencies to appropriate USD exchange rates. Specialized technical or scientific terms, abbreviations and acronyms should be explained the first time they are used. Italicize Italicize genera, species, and varieties, but not classes, orders and families. Figures, Photographs, and Tables Copies of Figures should be submitted on separate pages and numbered consecutively. Figure texts should be fully explanatory. Photos and Figures should be of high quality (a minimum resolution of 600 dpi in the format TIFF, EPS, GIF, JPEG or PPT), and be labeled with the photographer's and author's name. Copyright permission must be obtained for material copied from other publications. Figures should be prepared in a form that allows for reduction in size. Tables should be no more than ½ A4 page. Be sure to explain all abbreviations used. (Whenever possible the information in Tables should be presented in a Figure). The number of Figures in an article should not exceed 4-5, and the number of Tables not more than 2-3. References and Notes Short notes, footnotes and technical comments should be incorporated as notes. Acknowledgements should appear before the Reference section. References should not exceed 50 in number. You are requested to use the author/year format of referencing (see examples below). In the text please use et al. for papers with more than two authors. Provide first and last pages for excerpts from journals, books, etc. Names of journals should be written in full. Do not use op.cit., ibid. or other abbreviations. Personal communications and unpublished data should be referred to in the running text and not given as notes. All authors names up to 8 should be given. The abbreviation et al. can be used for papers with more than 8 authors, and following the first 8 names. In references to books, bulletins and reports, give number of pages, the city and the publisher. Use the following forms for references: Alber, John, Daniel C. If the paper has an English summary add (English summary). Avoid references to gray literature, to nonscientific publications and to publications that are not immediately accessible to the reader. AFTER ACCEPTANCE Upon acceptance of your article you will receive a link to the special Author Query Application at Springer s web page where you can sign the Copyright Transfer Statement online and indicate whether you wish to order OpenChoice, and additional print offprints. Once the Author Query Application has been completed, your article will be processed and you will receive the proofs. Open Choice In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription-based article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springer s online platform SpringerLink. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles. Springer Open Choice [ Copyright transfer Authors will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the Academy (or grant the Academy exclusive publication and dissemination rights). Open Choice articles do not require transfer of copyright as the copyright remains with the author. In opting for open access, they agree to the Springer Open Choice Licence. PDF/Offprints On publication a PDF file containing the published article will be sent to the corresponding author.

5 Additional offprints can be ordered by the corresponding author at the time the Author Query Application is received.. Color illustrations Publication of color illustrations is free of charge in the print and online version of AMBIO. Proof reading The purpose of the proof is to check for typesetting or conversion errors and the completeness and accuracy of the text, tables and figures. Substantial changes in content, e.g., new results, corrected values, title and authorship, are not allowed without the approval of the Editor. After online publication, further changes can only be made in the form of an Erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article. Online First The article will be published online after receipt of the corrected proofs. This is the official first publication citable with the DOI. After release of the printed version, the paper can also be cited by issue and page numbers.
