1 TDR: The Drama Review WRITER S GUIDELINES 665 Broadway 6th Floor New York, NY (phone) (fax) tdr@nyu.edu SUBJECT MATTER TDR is about performance in any of its many aspects: theatre, dance, music, film, video, rituals, play, sports, performance in everyday life, etc. We publish accounts of particular performances, theoretical articles that draw on many different kinds of performances, articles on the works of individual artists, book reviews, and manifestos. We are actively intercultural, interdisciplinary, and progressive; we favor writing about experimental performances, and performances with political or social relevance from all over the world. The best way to measure the scope of TDR is to look at recent issues. SUBMISSIONS With submissions, please include Contact Info CD (if applicable) Abstract ( words) Artwork and Captions Manuscript SASE (if applicable) TDR prefers electronic submissions. Send your article and abstract to tdr@nyu.edu as a Microsoft Word file attachment. In the body of the , be sure to include your contact information: address(es), phone number(s), fax number, address. Please also put your address on the first page of your article, with your name. * If you are submitting materials to supplement the online version of TDR (i.e. video clips, etc.), please contact our office for multimedia guidelines. Hard copy If it is not possible to submit your article electronically, you may send a hard copy to TDR. All submissions should follow TDR format guidelines (see Manuscript below). With your hard copy, please include a cover sheet with your address(es), phone number(s), fax number, and address. It will not be returned unless you include an SASE. Abstract Please include a word abstract of your article for publication on TDR s website and in the issue Table of Contents. The abstract should be a brief summary of the key -1-

2 points of the article, without the use of phrases such as In this article ; The author ; The article is about. For examples of these abstracts, please visit the TDR website at Artwork TDR prefers professional quality artwork when available. Send a variety so that we can make a selection. If possible, please submit all art electronically (you may send larger files to us via yousendit.com). You may also send artwork in hard copy or scanned onto a CD or zip disk. Non-electronic artwork will be returned after publication. Minimum Specs: 300 dpi at 5x7 inches (or larger if available). Format: tiff (only send jpeg when other format is not available; eps format is also acceptable). Duplicate all artwork before sending. We accept high-contrast glossy photos, slides, video grabs, and/or camera- ready graphics with your article. We also accept videos for possible use online (please request multimedia guidelines). Duplicate all slides before sending. Retain photo negatives. Do not send images in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. Sending images as attachments When sending images as attachments, they must be PC or Mac accessible and meet the same dpi requirements as stated above: 300 dpi minimum for photos at 5x7 or larger, and 800 to 1200 dpi for line art. to: tdr@nyu.edu and indicate your name, article title, and caption information (see below). Sending Images scanned to a CD or zip disk When scanning images, set scan as large as possible. Scan color images twice, once in color and once in black and white (2 files per image). Images should meet the same dpi requirements as stated above: 300 dpi minimum for photos at 5x7 or larger, and 800 to 1200 dpi for line art. Save files as tiff or eps. Please also include a file with the image captions clearly labeled (see below). Send in a padded envelope to the address above and include your name and submission title. Captions should include title, date, and venues; names of performers, directors, authors; and photographer or photo credit. Manuscript Commas: Dashes: Dates: Use serial commas before and : apples, oranges, and grapes. Use computer-generated N and M dashes if possible. Otherwise use two hyphens for N dashes, three hyphens for M dashes. Day month year (no commas): 1 September Spell out months: January Decades: In the 1960s; the 60s; 20th century. Ellipses: Bracket ellipses that indicate author s or editor s deletion: [...] Endnotes: Use computer-generated endnotes only. Although TDR converts them to footnotes in the published article, endnotes are used during the editing process. Place endnotes before references. Ethnicity: Ethnicity as per Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed., p. 325, section Unless you specify otherwise, we will edit accordingly. Font: Gender Interviews: Italics: Margins: Courier New, 12 pt We do not use masculine pronouns as universal. Except where descriptively appropriate, use gender-neutral nouns. The last name of the speaker in all caps followed by a colon: JONES: I said... Use computer-generated italics, no underlines (see Titles). 1 on all sides with a.5 header and footer. Non-English Words and Proper Names: Italicize non-english words on first use only. We rely on authors for accurate use of diacriticals; they must be computer-generated. For non- English language productions, give the title of the production first, then parenthetically in English: Maitu Njugira (Mother Sing for Me, 1981). Numbers: Spell out numbers from one to ten. Use numerals for numbers 11 and higher. -3-

4 References and Citations: Per Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed, author-date system. For citations within the text, use the author-date system: (Miller 1993:143 45) or (Miller 1993) or (see Miller 1993). See p. 620 section Place references after endnotes, at the end of document. Please do not put references in footnotes. References are for cited works only. List multiple sources by one author chronologically: Anthology MacGregor, Robert Further Entries for a Chronology. 5 Spacing Titles: Double-space all text, including endnotes, extracts, and reference lists. Type only one letter space after periods and colons. Italicize books, performances, operas, movies, T.V. and radio programs, paintings, sculptures, dances, and epic poems. In quotation marks: articles, unpublished works, TV and radio episodes, poems, and songs. Follow first mention of any performance or artwork with a date. Thank You!
