1 Anticipation Guide First, you and your partner will buddy-read the story, Farewell to Shady Glade*. Then read each statement below. If you agree with the statement, color in the box in the AGREE column. If you disagree with the statement, color in the box in the DISAGREE column. Put this paper and the rest of your tasks in your folder when they are completed. Statement Agree Disagree People should be able to use any land they want to build new houses. Animals don t care about where they live. It s easy to adapt to living in a new environment. *Teacher Note: Farewell to Shady Glade was the first book by Bill Peet written to raise awareness of environmental problems. The second environmental picture book for children was The Wump World, published in A year after The Wump World was published, the Dr. Suess book, The Lorax was published. There are interesting parallels in The Lorax to both The Wump World and Farewell to Shady Glade.

3 Wump Words Visit the site, to hear and see the story, The Wump World. Then read the character traits in the chart below. Decide if the word best describes the Wumps or the Pollutions, and show your thoughts by putting an X in the correct column. If the word doesn t fit either group, put the X in the middle column. Be ready to share your ideas with your classmates, and why the words wouldn t be about BOTH! Next, visit one of the following websites to locate more information about your chosen animal, and fill in the information below Illustrate a picture (but not the animal) that goes with one of your facts, so that after your presentation, your classmates can try to guess the animal you chose, based on your clues! 5 Comparing Characters Sometimes different characters in different books share the same experiences. After reading Farewell to Shady Glade, and The Wump World, answer the following questions. (Use the back, if you need more room) 1. How are the main characters the same? 2. How are these main characters different? 3. Think of 4 words that could describe the main characters in BOTH books: 4. How are the endings of the stories the same? 5. How are the endings of the stories different? 6. What is the POV (point of view) of The Wump World? 7. What is the POV (point of view) of Farewell to Shady Glade?

6 Book Cover After choosing a Bill Pete book of your choice, design and color your own book cover for the book you have just read. Then complete BOOK QUESTIONS to go with this activity. REMINDER: Be sure to include the title, author s name and the illustrator s name (yours). You may use the 8 x 11 drawing paper your teacher will provide.
