1 Lincoln Middle School Grades 6-8 Summer Reading Lists and Assignment Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s), In an effort to encourage reading for pleasure and develop lifelong independent readers, our students will participate in a required summer reading program. Studies show that reading over the summer will increase student academic success both now and in the future. The required LMS summer reading initiative is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore books they might not have chosen themselves. All incoming 6 th, 7 th & 8 th grade students are to choose two books, one fiction and one nonfiction book from the attached list. While we strongly encourage students to challenge themselves to make a selection from these listed titles, there is the option to choose a book off the list that coincides with the themes of the selected texts. Students who select a book that is not on the list must have their parents complete the parent approval form included in the summer packet in order to earn credit for the reading. For both books, students must complete the included graphic organizer/chart provided to assist them in at least one writing assessment when returning to school in September. The graphic organizer will be graded as a homework grade so it is important that it is completed. The writing assignment will be counted as an assessment grade. The books can be found at the Louis Bay Library or purchased from Barnes and Noble, or from any online source, as well as on any electronic device (Kindle, Nook, I-Pad, etc.). If you have a library card, The Louis Bay Library can order a copy of the book through the BCCLS System. Some of the books will be available as e-books and located on the Lincoln Middle School web site under Media Center. There you will find the tab for Destiny. Make sure once you are in Destiny to click on our school. There on the left side you will find Follett Shelf. Click on it and then enter username (lms) and password (hawthorne) to access the e-books. If you are having difficulty obtaining the books, please contact the school as LMS will have a few copies available to borrow. If the reading levels of required book selections require modification due to a child s Individual Educational Plan (IEP), please select your own book and use the Summer Reading Parental Approval Form. 2 ~ Summer Reading Committee Summer reading encourages a lifelong love of reading and keeps your mind active. Over the summer, please select and read one fiction and one nonfiction title listed below. For both books you will be required to complete the provided graphic organizer. You will be asked to compose at least one piece of writing for the books you read when you return to school in September. When completing the writing assignment, you will be able to use your graphic organizer. It it is important for you to take detailed notes when completing the graphic organizer. The graphic organizer will be graded as a homework grade so it is important that it is completed. The writing assignment will be counted as an assessment grade. If the reading levels of required book selections require modification due to a child s Individual Educational Plan (IEP), please select your own book and use the Summer Reading Parental Approval Form. You can often find a review and age-appropriate designation by searching the book title at: Additionally, the librarians at the Hawthorne public library can also be a helpful resource. NOTE: If you choose this option, you MUST bring in the parent approval form on the first day of school. SUMMER READING PARENT APPROVAL FORM If you choose Book of Choice to meet the requirements of the summer reading assignment, you must turn in this signed form. The written assignment cannot be accepted without this form.
