1 T SpringBoard Required Texts 9 th Grade: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee 2016 WHS SUMMER READING PROGRAM Requirements Students are required to read the novel/play covered in their SpringBoard text for the upcoming year. They must also read one additional book of their choice or complete the ReadWorks Summer Reading Packet for High School. (Packets are available in the WHS main office or the DeFuniak Springs Public Library.) The WHS Media Center will be open every other Monday (June 13 & 27 and July 11 & 25) throughout the Summer for students to check out books. Visit the school website ( for additional information regarding free book downloads that will be available to students throughout the Summer, as well. PDF versions of the required SpringBoard texts will also be made available. A Remind account for each grade level will serve as a communication tool between teachers and students regarding reading during the Summer months. Students and parents should sign up to receive notification regarding days throughout the Summer when teachers will be on campus conducting book talks for the SpringBoard texts. Students may also use Remind to communicate with grade level teachers regarding questions they may have between scheduled book talks. 10 th Grade: Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe 11 th Grade: Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer 12 th Grade: Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw ASSESSMENT: During the first week of school, students will complete the AR test for the SpringBoard text and a one-pager for their book of choice.
2 AP Literature & Composition Summer Reading 2016 As a regular part of AP Literature & Composition, students are expected to call upon evidence from their prior reading to support written arguments. As a result, many of the activities we will undertake in this class are designed to increase student exposure to well-regarded literature. The required reading for the course will be The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy. In addition, you are required to choose a second novel from the list below. Please choose a novel you have not yet read. Jane Eyre Othello The Bluest Eye The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Charlotte Bronte William Shakespeare Toni Morrison Mark Twain For each novel, find a list of the major themes (try looking in Cliff Notes or Spark Notes) and choose the two that are most interesting to you. As you read, track the appearance of these themes throughout the novel. Then fill out the attached Moments Sheet, identifying each theme s five most important moments in the novel. Bring your Moments Sheets to class with you on the first day of school. I will be taking them up for your first grade of the year. (20 points each) In addition, respond in an essay of at least 350 words to one of the prompts below using The Mayor of Casterbridge to support your argument. (This is also due the first day of school.) (10 Points) Choose a complex and important character in The Mayor of Casterbridge who might on the basis of the character s actions alone be considered evil or immoral. In a well-organized essay, explain both how and why the full presentation of the character in the work makes us react more sympathetically than we otherwise might. Avoid plot summary. Respond to the following quote from The Mayor of Casterbridge. Discuss its meaning within the work as well as its validity to society today: There are men whose hearts insist upon a dogged fidelity to some image or cause thrown by chance into their keeping, long after their judgment has pronounced it no rarity even the reverse, indeed, and without them the band of the worthy is incomplete. If you have any questions, you can reach me by at the address below. I will not be reachable by phone until the last week of summer vacation. I look forward to meeting you and getting next year off to a great start. Sincerely, Tracy Nick nickt@walton.k12.fl.us

5 AP Language & Composition Summer Reading 2016 As a regular part of AP Language & Composition, students are expected to call upon evidence from their prior reading to support written arguments. As a result, many of the activities we will undertake in this class are designed to increase student exposure to well-regarded literature. The required reading for the course will be In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. In addition, you are required to choose a second novel from the list below. Please choose a novel you have not yet read. East of Eden Into the Wild The Road The Jungle Their Eyes Were Watching God John Steinbeck Jack Krakauer Cormac McCarthy Upton Sinclair Zora Neale Hurston For each novel, find a list of the major themes (try looking in Cliff Notes or Spark Notes) and choose the two that are most interesting to you. As you read, track the appearance of these themes throughout the novel. Then fill out the attached Moments Sheet, identifying each theme s five most important moments in the novel. Bring your Moments Sheets to class with you on the first day of school. I will be taking them up for your first grade of the year. (25 points for In Cold Blood and 25 points for selected novel) In addition, respond in an essay of at least 350 words to one of the prompts below using In Cold Blood to support your argument. (This is also due the first day of school.) (50 Points) The tone of a book reveals an author s attitude toward his subject matter. Capote intended In Cold Blood to be both objective (non-judgmental) and sympathetic. Is this possible? Did he achieve it? Respond to the following quote from In Cold Blood. Discuss its meaning within the work as well as its validity to society today: Then he said something about a movie...said this show took place in Biblical times, and there was a scene where a man was flung off a balcony, thrown to a mob of men and women, who tore him to pieces. And he said that was what came to mind when he saw the crowd on the Square. The man being torn apart. And the idea that maybe that was what they might do to him. Said it scared him so bad his stomach still hurt...course he was wrong, and I told him so--nobody was going to harm him, regardless of what he'd done; folks around here aren't like that (253) If you have any questions, you can reach me by at the address below. I look forward to meeting you and getting next year off to a great start. Sincerely, David Pert pertd@walton.k12.fl.us
