Combined access to the entire backfiles of Anthropological Index 1957-present (produced by The British Museum) and Anthropological Literature 19 th century-present. Identifies print materials in anthropology, archaeology and related interdisciplinary research areas published in almost 900 journals and monographic series. Coverage of the North American and British literature is nearly exhaustive, and good for core European and Latin American sources. Anthrosource. This portal to American Anthropological Association (AAA) publications provides a fulltext archive of over 30 major AAA journals and newsletters from volume 1 to the present, and will continue to add additional AAA publications and other collections. Collection of abstracts of all presentations given at the American Anthropological Association s annual meeting. The book is divided into three sections: session abstracts, film and video abstracts, and abstracts of papers. Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts (LLBA). Provides broad international coverage of the literature of linguistics and related fields. All aspects of the study of language are covered, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Indexes and abstracts approximately 2,000 serials, recent books, dissertations and book reviews. Zoological Record. This database indexes over 5,000 animal biology, paleobiology, physical anthropology and zoology journal publications from 1864-present, and focuses on the natural biology of animals (fossil, recent, whole animal, behavioral, environmental, and cellular studies). Coverage includes primate studies and paleoanthropology of extinct human ancestors (e.g. Homo erectus, Homo neanderthalensis); excludes modern humans (Homo sapiens). Includes taxonomic information. AATA Online: Abstracts of International Conservation Literature. Formerly Art and Archaeology Technical Abstracts, this free online database is for researchers and professionals engaged in the conservation and management of material cultural heritage in all of its forms: works of art, cultural objects, architectural heritage, monuments and archaeological sites and materials. Comprehensively reviews and abstracts 150 journals and conference proceedings as new issues appear that selectively represent the field's core literature. Includes abstracts from 1932 to the present. Anthropology Online This online database gathers notes, memoirs, and texts from practitioners and theorists in the field of anthropology. It covers all aspects of the discipline such as culture, linguistics, medical, physical, and more. Index searching is available and covers anthropology from the 19th century to the present. Ethnographic Video Online. Vol. I, II, III This collection of online streaming video provides over 900 hours of historical and contemporary ethnographic film featuring cultural groups from Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, North America, and South America. Includes published documentaries, edited field recordings, interviews, and performances. Themes include family and race, material culture, language and culture, body language, marriage, and many more. Users can browse by title, author/ethnographer, geographic location, cultural group, subjects, date, people, and clips; advanced searching is also featured. Searchable text transcripts are included with each video, and users have the ability to edit clips and save playlists. Social Sciences Citation Index present. An interdisciplinary index to social science literature from 1898-present that allows you to trace citations made to articles. It can also be used like a standard bibliographic database and indexes the core journals in anthropology and related fields. The SSCI is searchable in the Web of Science database. 4 Sociological Abstracts. This sociology database has excellent coverage of the core cultural anthropology journals and a good subject thesaurus. Indexes articles, book chapters, conference papers (both published and unpublished), dissertations and book reviews. Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory Provides topical syntheses that critically assess and integrate research on a specific subject in archaeological method or theory. More than a bibliographic essay, each article establishes a framework for synthesizing findings, provides incisive commentary on previous work, and identifies research priorities." Continues the discontinued Archaeological Method and Theory, (930.1 Ar2222 in SSHEL Stacks, Oak Street, and Main Stacks) and Advances in Archaeological Method and Theory, ( Ad9 in Main Stacks). Journal issues after 1994 are exclusively available online. Yearbook of Physical Anthropology. Published once a year as a supplement to American Journal of Physical Anthropology, this resource contains essays on developments within the field of physical anthropology. HUMAN RELATIONS AREA FILES (HRAF) The Human Relations Area Files (HRAF) is a collection of thousands of full-text sources about almost 400 cultures worldwide. SSHEL Microforms Oak Street Human Relations Area Files (HRAF) and ehraf World Cultures. A specially organized collection of thousands of full text sources on almost 400 cultures worldwide. HRAF can be useful for anyone looking for background information or specific data on a particular ethnic group, culture or country, as well as by those investigating subjects like architecture, kinship, and political structure or settlement patterns on a comparative cross-cultural basis. All HRAF installments published since 1995 are available only online via the ehraf World Cultures, while most older installments are available only in print or microfiche. Provides access to the published literature on selected archaeological traditions worldwide, following the format and approach of ehraf World Cultures. BOOK REVIEWS Resources that include reviews of books, either non-fiction or fiction, where a book is evaluated based on content, style, and merit. Online Anthropology Review Database. A searchable database of reviews of anthropological books, films & videos, audio recordings, software, multimedia, and on-line resources. Sponsored by the University of Buffalo Department of Anthropology, this resource provides surprisingly broad and timely coverage of current publications and products. Anthrosource. This portal to American Anthropological Association publications includes book reviews from the publications indexed. Search with the name of the book in quotes or try searching by author (lastname, firstname). Anthropology Resources 4

5 Reviews in Anthropology. The only anthropological journal entirely dedicated to current in-depth book reviews. The online version can be used for browsing purposes, but is not useful for searching for reviews of particular items. Print is discontinued; current issues are online only. Sociological Abstracts. An excellent source for reviews of books in cultural anthropology. In advanced search, enter a few words from the title and/or author of the book in the first search box using the Boolean operator AND, then add the phrase review (example: melodrama of mobility and review or abelmann and review ). To view reviews, under Narrow Results by on the results screen, click on Document type, then select review. BIBLIOGRAPHIES Bibliographies are lists of citations of books, websites, journals, articles, and other resources about a specific subject. Bibliographies can appear at the end of a book, journal, or encyclopedia article, or as a separate publication. Online K23c M941e 1975 Sup Bibliografía Mesoamericana. Comprehensive bibliographic database of published literature pertaining to the anthropology of Mesoamerica provided by the University Library of Pennsylvania and the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies (FAMSI). Content includes archaeology, ethnography, ethnohistory, art history, linguistics, physical anthropology, and other related disciplines. This project is currently on hold; their entries are complete through Cultural Anthropology: A Guide to Reference and Information Sources The purpose of this guide is to help various levels of anthropology students and researchers find the information they are seeking in print and online, and for questions needing brief answers to literature reviews. The guide is organized by interests in the field. Works included are organized by title and by the following categories: reference literature; literature surveys and reviews; dictionaries, encyclopedias, and handbooks; biographies; published library catalogs and guides; internet gateways. Features an author and title index. Ethnographic Bibliography of North America: 4 th Edition Supplement (v. #1-3). Supplements the th edition edited by George P. Murdock ( M941e 1975 in SSHEL Ref) The 1990 supplement represents a massive update of this classic bibliography, drawing together a large body of literature from diverse sources, including references to published books and articles, as well as government publications (U.S., federal, state, and Canadian), dissertation and theses, ERIC documents, manuscripts and archival documents, and non-print materials (films, maps, etc.) from the 16 th century to Volume one of the 1990 edition includes an overview of 290 ethnic groups in 17 broad regions in North America as well as indexes by author (including primary and secondary authors, editors, and translators), ethnic group and subject. Volumes 2 and 3 contain the actual citations. Oxford Bibliographies Online: Anthropology. This online database gives extensive lists of resources for common subjects in anthropology including people and places. Each entry gives an introduction and overview. Within each entry, bibliographies are further broken down by subject. Useful for students and researchers of all levels. Anthropology Resources 5

6 DIRECTORIES Directories are a list of organizations, groups, people, places, or other data systematically arranged often alphabetically or by location Am3g1b AnthroGuide: A Guide to Programs, Directory of Members Annual directory published by the American Anthropological Association (AAA), containing information on more than 800 departments in academic and research institutions, museums, and government organizations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, France, Norway, United Kingdom, China, Singapore, and South Africa.. Also includes a directory of AAA members and divisions (units), a section of statistics related to academic anthropology, and a list of dissertations produced in the period covered by each edition. Current year is located in SSHEL Reference, previous years in Main Stacks. Biographical Dictionary of Anthropologists Including over 300 anthropologists, this dictionary provides brief summaries of anthropologists personal and professional work. Entries include bibliographies Am57b En En F46 Biographical Dictionary of Social and Cultural Anthropology Outlines basic biographical information for key figures that have directly engaged sociocultural anthropology at some point in their careers. Written by anthropologists from all over the world, each entry contains year and date of birth, a short biography, education, field work and key publications. Four indices are provided: interests, institutions, names, and concepts. Encyclopedia of Archaeology: The Great Archaeologists. 2 vols Arranged chronologically from William Camden (b ) to David Clarke (b ), each entry begins with a brief overview of the archaeologist's main contributions, followed by an in-depth but accessible examination of their life and work and a list of references. Second volume has an index. Encyclopaedia of the Social Sciences. 15 vols This classic work includes almost 4000 biographies of prominent 19 th and early 20 th century social scientists; only persons deceased at the time of writing were included. Figures deemed more important have longer entries, but most are quite brief. Fifty Key Anthropologists This volume, intended for students of anthropology as well as general readers, contains brief introductions to the lives and work of 50 English-speaking social anthropologists who have made important contributions to the discipline. Each entry is signed and contains a list of selected readings written by or about the anthropologists. Bold type highlights references to colleagues also profiled in the volume and key terms defined in the appendix. Appendix I contains definitions of key terms, with references to related figures bolded. Appendix II contains a timeline indicating the evolution of anthropological thought and the key figures of each movement. A chronological list of the contributors and an index are included. 7 303 In8 303 In G125d:E W842 International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences. 19 vols Volume 18 of this classic reference source includes substantial biographical essays for approximately 600 prominent social scientists and others whose ideas helped shape the social sciences. The biographies are notable for their analytic (as opposed to descriptive) emphasis and include selective bibliographies. No persons born after 1890 are included. See page xxvi for the list of anthropologists. International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences. 2 nd ed. 9 vols A Thematic Outline in volume one lists biographical entries under each subject category. For anthropologists biographies, look under Anthropology-Biographies in the Thematic Outline. The Routledge Dictionary of Anthropologists Provides a historical look at the work of prominent anthropologists across the globe within the framework of their peers and schools of thought. Chapters are arranged by national traditions and include details of each anthropologist s life and work, theories and publications. Each chapter concludes with an extensive bibliography. Women Anthropologists: A Biographical Dictionary International in scope, this book provides biographical information on women who have made a significant contribution to anthropology during the past century. A bibliography of works both about and by the anthropologist is included after each entry. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: DICTIONARIES, ENCYCLOPEDIAS, & HANDBOOKS Background information can be found in reference sources, online or in print, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and handbooks. Dictionaries contain brief definitions, usually only a sentence or two in length. Encyclopedias provide a more in-depth description, usually a few paragraphs in length. Handbooks contain descriptions that can be multiple pages and describe the development and future of a subject. Dictionaries Cambridge Dictionary of Human Biology and Evolution This dictionary covers broad and specific terms useful to researching and studying Anthropology. Terms cover biology, chemistry, zoology, primatology, and anatomy. Includes cross-references and related terms M833c D258c 2008 Concise Dictionary of Social and Cultural Anthropology Intended as a straight-forward introduction to social and cultural anthropology, this dictionary contains over 800 short, "plain, jargon-free" definitions, primarily focusing on concepts, rather than specific people and places. Many entries contain cross-references and suggestions for further reading. A few major sources are highlighted, and an extensive list of references is included. The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Archaeology Intended for novices to the field, this general dictionary includes terms, sites, and biographies. Each entry is classified to help users identify the type of entry (i.e. artifact, biographical entry, material, etc.). A quick reference section is included. Anthropology Resources 7

Coverage is somewhat uneven, but seems especially good for material culture and ritual practice. Dictionary of Artifacts Contains over 2,000 brief entries about archaeological artifacts. The entries are arranged alphabetically and cover artifact description, discovery, analysis, typology, dating, conservation, and basic types. Dictionary of Concepts in Physical Anthropology Contains about 75 entries with brief discussions of major concepts in physical anthropology. Each entry gives the meaning of a concept, traces its "historical origins and connotative development," and provides a list of references to related works. Encyclopedic Dictionary of Archaeology Defines terms and techniques of archaeology and describes the major premises, important concepts, and scientific methods used. Provides a very good balance of New World and Old World Coverage. With a total of 7,000 entries, it is the largest and most comprehensive dictionary of its kind. Includes archaeological abbreviations, bibliography, supplementary list of archaeological sites and terms, and a section on writing and archaeology which provides a timeline of the development of writing systems worldwide. New Penguin Dictionary of Archaeology Covers over three million years in the history of human development, including articles on the cultures of the Egyptians, Etruscans, Aztecs, Celts and more, written by international experts in the field. The book is structured like a traditional dictionary, with entries organized alphabetically and consisting of names, archaeological sites, periods, and artifacts. The dictionary is primarily intended for quick reference. Encyclopedias Ar C Archaeology in America: An Encyclopedia Leading scholars have written in-depth essays on over 300 of the most important archaeological sites in North America that explain the importance of the site, the history of the people who left the artifacts, and the nature of the ongoing research. The four volume set is divided into 8 regions: the Arctic and Subarctic, the Great Basin and Plateau, the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains, the Midwest, the Northeast, the Southeast, the Southwest, and the West Coast. Each entry provides readers with an accessible overview of the archaeological site as well as books and articles for further research. Each volume also contains a glossary and an index. Companion Encyclopedia of Anthropology Closer to a handbook or reader than to an encyclopedia, this is the first systematic synthesis of the discipline for many years. Taking a broad look at anthropological issues across disciplines, this work presents a baseline of anthropological knowledge, as well as an analysis of new areas of study and future trends. Reference lists follow most entries En199 Encyclopedia of American Folklife. 4 vols Illuminates the ways in which folk crafts, foods, architecture, remedies, customs, holidays, narratives, and speech identify Americans and their way of life. Covers a variety of broad topics such as urban and suburban folklife, ethnic folklife, religious folklife, vernacular or perceptual regions, regional Native American groups, age groups, gender and sexual groups, etc. Entries on particular groups or communities usually Anthropology Resources 8

9 include census figures or other survey results and a description of efforts to preserve and promote such communities and their traditions. Each entry contains a list of sources. Includes general, cultural group, and geographical indices En193 Encyclopedia of Anthropology. 5 vols Contains 1,000 entries on a variety of areas of study, including archaeology, cultural anthropology, and linguistics, as well as articles from related disciplines such as geology, sociology, and philosophy. The articles were written by over 250 international experts in the field. Entries are alphabetical, with the complete list of topics provided at the start of each volume. Suggestions for further reading conclude the articles. Each volume contains an index, and colorful photographs can be found throughout the work. Encyclopedia of Archaeology Topics in this encyclopedia are broken down by location and subject and cover the present knowledge of archaeology from current and future practices. Entries give an overview of the topic and include pictures or diagrams if relevant and references. Accessible to all levels. Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology This comprehensive electronic resource goes beyond archaeological sites by looking at archaeology's connection with the other social and physical sciences. The various sections include archaeological theory, classical studies, chemistry, field work, geology, and more. Each entry is written by professionals in the field, providing a first-hand experience in the world of archaeology En En191 E76.2.J Encyclopedia of Historical Archaeology Provides an introduction to the field of historical archaeology and includes definitions of concepts, explanations of approaches and summaries of current research on particular sites. Each alphabetical entry is a signed article by an expert in the field and includes extensive cross-references and lists of further reading. Includes an index. Encyclopedia of Medical Anthropology: Health and Illness in the World s Cultures. 2 vols This two-volume set explores the social and cultural context of medical beliefs and practices. The first volume contains 53 essays on topics related to general medical concepts and perspectives; medical systems, political, economic, and social issues, sexuality, reproduction, and the life cycle, and health conditions and diseases. The second volume provides portraits of health and illness in 52 cultures from around the world, with every cultural region and varied levels of complexity represented. Each chapter includes a list of references, the first volume begins with a glossary, and the second volume contains a subject index. Encyclopedia of Native Tribes of North America nd ed. This encyclopedia is notable for the large number of illustrations, maps and photographs which accompany the text and compliment the factual information. The work focuses on ten regions (Northeaster Woodlands, Southeaster Woodlands, Plains and Prairie, Plateau, Great Basin, California, Southwest, Northwest Coast, Subarctic, and Artic) and includes a comprehensive classification of native languages, maps for each culture, history of each tribe, and illustrations to show past and present daily life. Features a glossary, bibliography, museum section, compilation of native populations, and index En19 Encyclopedia of Prehistory. 9 vols This set, prepared in conjunction with Human Relation Area Files (HRAF), includes basic information on all archaeologically known cultures, and is intended to provide a basis for comparative research. The eight volumes cover different regions of the world (e.g., Africa or Oceania). Entries provide an overview of major archaeological traditions Anthropology Resources 9

10 highlighting subsistence practices, sociopolitical organization, and material industries. All entries are written by prominent anthropologists and include bibliographies. Useful chronologies are provided at the front and detailed indices at the back of the last volume. A cumulative index is also provided in volume En Sh825e Et383 GN635.S57 M Encyclopedia of World Cultures. 10 vols. & sup This outstanding reference source provides lengthy descriptions, written by prominent scholars, of thousands of cultural and ethnic groups. The ethnographic summaries cover demography, linguistic affiliation, history and cultural relations, settlements, economy, kinship, marriage and family, sociopolitical organization, religion, and expressive culture. Each entry provides a short bibliography of key sources for further research. Each volume covers a specific geographic area and includes maps, a list of films, and a very helpful ethnonym index that cross-references alternate names and the names of related groups and subgroups. Detailed cumulative indexes and a glossary are provided in Vol. 10, and each volume is prefaced with maps showing the distribution of cultural groups. Ethnic Groups of Africa and the Middle East: An Encyclopedia This encyclopedia, for the beginner and specialist, targets those looking for information on specific ethnic groups in Africa and Middle East. Each signed entry offers: alternative names and spellings; major population centers, estimated population figures, primary languages, similarities with other ethnic groups; recommended readings. Entries also feature ethnic groups origins, historical developments, cultures, customs, economics, politics, and major issues. Features a geographical index and index. Ethnic Groups of Europe: An Encyclopedia This encyclopedia contains 100 entries on information on specific ethnic groups in Europe. Each entry contains the groups origins, early history, cultural life, recent developments, further readings, and the dynamic process of ethnicity which includes factors of migration, war, religion, etc. Features a geographical index and index. Ethnic Groups of South Asia and the Pacific: An Encyclopedia This encyclopedia provides an introduction to the ethnicity in South Asia and the Pacific. Each entry includes a cultural and historical summary, and concludes with suggested further readings. Includes a general alphabetical index, as well as a geographical index, listing ethnic group entries by country. The Greenwood Encyclopedia of American Regional Cultures. 8 vols This eight-volume set examines the cultures of the geographic regions of the United States. Each chapter concludes with references to further resources, including, in most cases, printed resources, web sites, films or videos, recordings, festivals and events, organizations, and special collections. Photos, drawings, and maps illustrate each volume. A timeline of major events for the region provides context for understanding the cultural development of the region. A bibliography, primarily of general sources about the region, precedes the index. The volumes are organized by region: Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, New England, Pacific, Rocky Mountain, the South, and Southwest H88 The Human Fossil Record. 4 vols Authoritative and comprehensive documentation of the fossil evidence relevant to the study of our evolutionary past. Fossils from major sites are clearly documented, with a focus on morphological characters. Organized alphabetically by site name, each entry includes clear descriptions, excellent photos and illustrations, an overview of the site, context and dating, as well as references to the literature. I In Main Ref GN380.N v R Immigrants in American History: Arrival, Adaptation, and Integration This four volume encyclopedia provides a comprehensive overview of various immigrant groups and migrations from 1500 to the present in the United State of America. Each section is broken down by either country of origin or ethnic identity and summarizes why they immigrated, where they settled, changes in immigration patterns and cultural experiences when they arrived. Vol. one covers up to 1870 then begins Vol. two covers and begins 1940-present. Vol. three completes 1940-present. Vol. four covers immigration issues and has a bibliography. International Encyclopedia of Linguistics. 4 vols This work contains 850 articles that address topics in linguistics, including sociolinguistics and areas such as historical, comparative, formal, mathematical, functional, and philosophical. Attention is given to interrelations within these branches of the field and to relations of linguistics with other disciplines including computer science, mathematics, philosophy, the social and behavioral sciences, and literary studies. Includes article bibliographies and a subject index. Native Peoples of the World: An Encyclopedia of Groups, Cultures, and Contemporary Issues This encyclopedia seeks to answer key questions and define problematic terms related to indigenous peoples and the world in which they live. Part I (Volumes 1 and 2), which encapsulates the contents of the first two volumes, profiles approximately 400 native groups, divided by region and organized alphabetically by the names of the groups. Part II (Volume 3), covers indigenous relations within 77 countries in which they reside, organized by country name. Part III (Volume 3) focuses on the central issues facing native groups across the globe, organized by topic heading.
