Book Options 2017 Summer Reading Instructions English I Class Title Author Synopsis The Alchemist Paulo Coelho Paulo Coelho's masterpiece tells the mystical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure. His quest will lead him to riches far different and far more satisfying than he ever imagined. (amazon.com). The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian Farewell to Manzanar II. Sherman Alexie Jeanne Houston & James D. Houston Reading Tracker Instructions... Sherman Alexie tells the story of Junior, a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Determined to take his future into his own hands, Junior leaves his troubled school on the rez to attend an all-white farm town high school where the only other Indian is the school mascot (amazon.com). Jeanne Wakatsuki was seven years old in 1942 when her family was uprooted from their home and sent to live at Manzanar internment camp--with 10,000 other Japanese Americans (amazon.com). Each of these novels is a coming of age story also known as a bildungsroman. This means that each novel focuses on one character s growth and maturity. For this reason, you will fill out a chart that will track the main character s growth over the course of the novel. This chart will help us write our first literary analysis paragraph or essay. You will need to analyze 5 quotes from the beginning of the novel, 5 quotes from the middle of the novel, and 5 quotes from the end of the novel. See attached example and chart template. III. Create Options Instructions NOTE: Although these books deal with some adult themes, all work should be school appropriate. Option 1: Map Create a map of the main character s journey. Include actual or figurative places the character goes. Include representations (pictures) of settings, events, and people your character encounters on his or her journey. You need between 8-12 places on your map. Label each person or place on your map with a short description. Your map should be colorful, neat, and accurate to the novel. Option 2: Photo Album Find or create a series of 8-12 photos the main character may have taken throughout the novel. These photos must represent events, people and details from the book. Include a caption or a description for each photo from the perspective of the main character. Your photo album should be colorful, neat, and accurate to the novel. Option 3: Illustrations Imagine you are creating pictures that will be used in a future illustrated version of the book. Draw and color representations of at least 5 crucial scenes that spark change in the main character. At least one scene should be from the beginning of the novel, one from the middle, and one from the end. If you can identify the climax of the story, include it. Include captions or descriptions for each illustration. Your illustrations should be colorful, neat, and accurate to the novel. Option 4: Timeline Create an illustrated timeline of important events from the novel that influence the main character. Identify time markers (years, months, days, or times). Write a brief summary or description of each event on the timeline. Include at least 7 events with at least 5 illustrations or pictures that represent various events. 2 IV. Grading The following rubrics will be used to evaluate your work. Reading Tracker Rubric Selection of Quotations Context Analysis Sufficient. Focused on the main character but may not highlight key moments in the character s journey. All 15 quotes are selected but may not be from the appropriate parts of the text. Insufficient. May not focus on the main character. May all be chosen from the beginning of the text. May not include the required 15 quotations. Insufficient. Does not demonstrate understanding of the events or characters. May have inaccuracies, may be unacceptably vague, or may be unacceptably brief. Insufficient. Only addresses the physical events or characters. Does not begin to consider what is happening internally. Unacceptably brief. Sufficient. Shows adequate understanding of the events and characters of the text. Sufficient to understand context of quotation selected. Sufficient. Begins to read between the lines. Addresses internal changes in personality or point of view. Slight but understandable misreads may occur. Well-chosen. Carefully chosen from designated areas of the text (5 from the beginning, 5 from the middle, 5 from the end). Highlight the most formative moments in the character s journey over the course of the text. Thorough. Demonstrates full understanding of the events and people surrounding the quotation. Shows evidence of careful reading. Insightful. Goes beyond the physical world of what is happening. Reads between the lines. Offers insight into the personality or point of view of the main character using specific, high quality language. Presents an explanation of the change. Depict people, places, or ideas that are essential to the main character s journey. Thorough. Captions or descriptions show thorough understanding of text and clearly convey importance of image. 3 Reading Tracker Student Name: Directions Example Quotation Choose a quote from the text that reveals the main character s personality/world view at this point in the story. Include the author s name and page #! He wanted to drive the idea of studying Kabbalah from my mind. In vain. I succeeded on my own in finding a master (Wiesel 4). *From Night by Elie Wiesel Context What is happening at this point in the novel? What information helps us understand the quote you chose? Elie is a child and wants to study a type of Judaism that his dad thinks is inappropriate for his age. Without his dad s permission, he convinced Moishe to teach him. Analysis What is revealed about the main character and their world view in this quotation? Read between the lines. Use high quality descriptive language (NOT good, or happy ). You may include why he or she is or feels this way. Elie is determined to study without his dad s permission. This shows his dedication and commitment to his religion but it also shows that he is rebellious because he doesn t do what his dad says. Quotes from the beginning of the book

It is access to a better way of life. Karin Slaughter Summer reading is an important part of your preparation for high school. You will begin to practice the reading and analysis skills that will help you succeed in high school and beyond. For this reason, every student enrolled as a freshman at Eastwood Academy for the fall of 2017 must complete the following: 1. Select and read one of the following books. Your options are: a. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, b. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, or c. Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston & James D. Houston. HINT: Read each summary on the supporting document and choose the book that interests you the most. 2. Complete a reading tracker that follows the main character s growth over the course of the novel. HINT: Read with a pen or pencil in hand. Mark the passages or quotations that stand out to you as important. Use your instincts. Use the example entry on the tracker to guide your own work. 3. Complete one of the drawing options described in the supporting document. HINT: Read each of the options and then choose the option that appeals to your skills and interests. When you finish, check your work against the rubric provided!
