1 LESSON 58 pages REPORT WITH TEXTUAL CITATIONS To format a bound report with textual citations and references; to improve word choice skills. 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 3e, 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d, 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d, 5e Discuss the use and formatting of bound reports, referring to pages Make sure students understand that the only difference between an unbound report and a bound report is the left margin. Review these report features: margins, page numbering, internal spacing, main headings, side headings, textual citations, and reference lists (pages 86 and 87). You may wish to show students the model bound report on page 178 in Lesson 59 (however, the purpose of that model is really to demonstrate footnotes, which students will use in that lesson). Get students started keying Document 1 in 58B. Observe formatting and confirm/correct. Have students finish 58B and do 58C on their own. For 58B, observe formatting and confirm/correct. Have students choose a short newspaper or magazine article and key it in bound report format. Have students complete the Word Processing Activities on pages 176 and 177 and the Internet Activity on page 177. Have them compose at the keyboard four sentences that correctly use the four words presented in 58C. Review the use and formatting of bound reports and these report features: margins, page numbering, internal spacing, main headings, side headings, textual citations, and references pages. 1
2 LESSON 59 pages REPORT WITH FOOTNOTES To format a bound report with footnotes; to format a reference page. 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 3e, 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d, 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d, 5e, 5g Review formatting guidelines for bound reports (page ). Discuss the formatting of footnotes (page 178). Demonstrate the Footnote feature on classroom equipment. Point out the bulleted items in 59C. Explain that bullets are used (1) for emphasis (to call attention to important points) and (2) in lists instead of numbers when the order of items does not matter. Guide students through Step 1 of 59C. Examine with them the model bound report on page 178, explaining the footnote formatting. Get students started keying the model (Step 2). As they work, observe formatting and confirm/correct. Have students finish 59C on their own. Observe formatting and confirm/correct. Administer the timed writing in 59B (print and distribute the timed writing from Appendix D on your IRCD). Use the model report to review the formatting of bound reports and footnotes. Have students begin Activities 1 through 3 of Communication/Math Skills 6 on pages Instruct students to divide the work among this and the next two lessons. Have students complete Steps 1 and 2 of the Ethics Activities in Communicating Your Perspective 3 (page 188). Tell students that their reports are due at the end of this unit. Review the use and formatting of bound reports. Review the formatting of footnotes. 2

Have students complete one of the Reading on the Job activities in the Workplace supplement. Have students prepare a title page for a report they have already created. Have students continue work on Activities 1 through 3 of Communication/Math Skills 6 on pages Remind students that the activities are due at the end of Lesson 61. Have students continue work on the Ethics Activities in Communicating Your Perspective 3 (page 188). Remind students that their reports are due at the end of this unit. Review (or have student volunteers review) the formatting of bound reports, with special emphasis on references pages and title pages. 3

Have students work on Activities 4 and 5 of Communication/Math Skills 6 on pages Have students continue work on the Ethics Activities in Communicating Your Perspective 3 (page 188). Remind students that their reports are due at the end of this unit. Review formatting guidelines for bound reports and endnotes. 5

Review as needed formats for references and title pages (pages ). Explain the purpose of a report summary. Make sure students know how to set right dot leader tabs with their software. Guide students as they begin formatting Document 2 in 63B. Observe formatting and confirm/correct. Have students finish 63B and do 63C on their own. Observe formatting and confirm/correct. Administer the timed writing in 63D (print and distribute the timed writing from Appendix D on your IRCD). Have students prepare a table of contents in bound report format for the first five chapters of a textbook. If some students do not key a minimum of between 28 and 32 gwam on their 3-minute writing in 63D, or if they have more than eight errors, give additional keying practice. Have students compose at the keyboard a summary of a newspaper article in bound report format. Have students complete Activity 6 (the Career Clusters activity) of Communication/Math Skills 6 on page 187. Have students complete work on the Ethics Activities in Communicating Your Perspective 3 (page 188). Review (or have student volunteers review) the use and formatting of a bound report. Choose some good examples of bound reports from those prepared in this unit for inclusion in the notebook of correctly and attractively formatted documents for class use. 6
