How to find a book in the library. What is an online library catalog? It is a database that is a collection of searchable individual records of items that a library owns. 1

2 Library classification systems Within a library collection, materials are typically organized by subject. The Dewey Decimal System Library of Congress Classification System Dewey Decimal Classification Dewey Decimal call numbers are composed of 10 main categories: 000: generalities 100: philosophy 200: religion 300: social sciences 400: language 500: pure sciences 600: technology (applied sciences) 700: the arts 800: literature 900: general geography & history Dewey Decimal Classification 2 Used in many public libraries, some smaller college libraries, and K-12 school libraries. Fiction books are shelved by author s last name. Most libraries have separate areas for fiction, nonfiction, mystery, and biography. Example: FICTION THEROUX PAUL Non-fiction books consist of numbers first and they are shelved in numerical order by subject The subject and the author s name determine the unique number of the book and where it is located in the library. Example: GLAD 2

3 How DDC call numbers are constructed: Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell GLAD 153 class number for psychology, mental processes & intelligence..44 Knowledge (Cognition). GLAD first letters of the author s last name. Library of Congress Classification Mission College uses the Library of Congress classification system. Library of Congress call numbers are composed of 20 main categories: A - General Works B - Philosophy, Psychology, Religion C - Auxiliary Sciences of History D - History: General and outside the Americas E - History: United States F - History: U.S. Local and America G - Geography H - Social Sciences J - Political Science K - Law L Education M - Music N - Fine Arts P - Language and Literature Q Science R - Medicine S - Agriculture T - Technology U - Military Science V - Naval Science Z - Library Science Library of Congress Classification 2 Used in most academic libraries, many large public libraries, and by the Library of Congress. Call numbers are indicated by letters of the alphabet first, then numbers, and then a combination of letters and numbers, followed by the publishing year. Example: KF4800.Z9 I All items in the library are shelved together by subject matter. There are no separate areas for fiction and non-fiction. 3

4 How LC call numbers are constructed: Illegal Immigration: Opposing Viewpoints by Charles P. Cozic, book editor KF4800.Z9 I KF - class letter for bibliography & law of the United States subdivision for immigration law..z9 I43 - book number derived from LC tables, the alphabet often, but not necessarily, represents the author s last name year the book was published. 5 You can search in the following ways: Author example: morrison, tony Title example: c++ primer Subject example: internet Keyword example: canada and history Indexes Information in a catalog records fields make up an index that is searchable. An index is an alphabetical list of names, subjects, etc., with references to the places where they occur. The items in the library s collection are indexed in the online library catalog. Some items are not indexed in the online library catalog. Searching the catalog by subject A subject search only searches the subject field. The subject field uses controlled vocabulary, which means that the subjects are standard, accepted subject terms for the material in the online catalog. A controlled vocabulary is used to standardize the subject terms so that multiple terms are not used for the same subject. 5
