4 National Coordination Service for Public Libraries placed at National and University Library in Zagreb central head library for all types of libraries in Croatia part of Croatian Institute for Librarianship library development centre cooperate with: all types of libraries County Central Library Services for Public and School Libraries and Academic and Special Libraries Ministry of culture Croatian Library Council Croatian Library Association other professional organizations and cultural institutions operate upon: Croatian Library Act (1997), Rules for the Central Library Services in the Republic of Croatia (2001) National Coordination Service for Public Libraries main task: cooperate with 20 County Central Library Services for
5 National Coordination Service for Public Libraries tasks performs the professional supervision of work of 20 County Central Library Services for Public Libraries and analyses the state of their work in local community makes the collective annual report on the work of County Central Library Services and their plans for the next year processing statistical data about the work of the public libraries collected through the statistical questionnaire based upon the ISO 2789 standard solve all the professional questions in the scope of the public libraries on the national level (acquisition, processing, revision and depreciation, preservation and digitization of library materials, questions of the library spaces and equipment, number of librarians...) keep up to date with public library legislation suggest the development of basic documents, standards, developmental strategies, guidelines, instructions etc. encourage the librarians' lifelong learning in public
6 Public Library System in Croatia important national cultural resource part of cultural offer available to all citizens consists of 20 County Central Library Functions: Services for Public and School important Libraries role in planning the library network monitoring, supervising, professional help and advice planning the design and layout of new and refurbished libraries introducing of information technology and network development staff training and continuing professional education Public Library Network consists of more than two hundered public libraries (without branches and units): city, municipality, county libraries (as independent institutions) and libraries as part of Cultural Centres or Public Open Universities Zagreb City Libraries the largest library network in Croatia Public libraries - under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture and local government
7 Zagreb City Libraries today well organized network of public libraries in the City of Zagreb the biggest public library in Croatia County Central Library Service for public and school libraries in Zagreb and the County of Zagreb is placed at Zagreb City Libraries Zagreb City Libraries: 42 public libraries with 73 units 2 mobile library services (bibliobus) 317 school libraries
8 Interactive programs between library users and librarians in Croatia public libraries have responsibility: - to promote reading and interest for books (through projects for motivatioin to read) - to support all kinds of education, cultural and linguistic development librarians are trying to modernize their work: - maintain interactive programs to promote the role of public libraries in society - create positive relationship of users and librarians a new vision of public libraries is being developed: up to date, taking notice of their users needs, trying to offer adequate answers to the users questions and becoming a meeting place of different generations and social inclusion equally
9 Interactive programs for motivation to read in public libraries in Croatia National Coordination Service for Public Libraries at National and University Library in Zagreb has collected data on the implemented interactive programs for motivation to read which promote culture of reading and motivate reading habits among citisens of all ages (2013.: 2016.) contribute to development and achieving reading competences, critical thought and researching current topics and everyday issues in society the programs aim various age groups, social levels, user groups, literature genres as well as professional and scientific fields selected are larger interactive programs for motivation to read on national level which are being held at the public libraries interactive projects are being carried out: - independently (project The Library Wide Open Doors, project 65 plus) - joined projects of several public libraries (Seekers - Children's Reading Blog) - part of a specific event (Croatian Book Month, Book Night,
10 Interactive projects for motivation to read according to survey conducted in Croatian public libraries in there were 317 interactive projects for motivation to read conducted in all 20 counties and the City of Zagreb the majority of projects (219 or 69%) were intended for children and young people, joined programmes aimed to all the age groups make 16 % of the projects and projects for adults make 15 % of the projects Percentage of programmes for adults; 15% Percentage of joined progammes; 16% Percentage of projects for children and young people; 69%
11 Project sponsored by UNICEF Read To Me! the first national campaigne for motivation to read aloud to children at their earliest age ( the campaign was launched in 2013 on the occasion of European Year of Reading Aloud, under the patronage of Ministry of Social Politics and Young People organizers: Croatian Library Association, UNICEF, Croatian Pediatrics Association, Croatian Reading Association, Croatian Association of Researchers in Childrens' Literature and Croatian Logopedic Association Goals - encourage parents and other adults to begin: - reading aloud to children since their birth (create special emotional bond between a child and an adult) - understanding the parameters of reading to a child as a part of early literacy - visiting local library and making a quality selection of reading materials campaign Read To Me! is within the European Literacy Policy Network (ELINET) accepted as european example of
12 The Library Wide Open Doors Project The goals: to promote reading, lifelong learning and social inclusion of children with developmental disabilities and physically handicapped young adults The project includes: - Storytelling and Imaginative Session, programmes for inclusion of children with hearing and speech impairement, reading and writing difficulties - part of this project is programme Book Reports in a Different Way - librarians and children writing a book report (a short essay) on a literary text they have read, kind of specific help in doing homework - Creative workshops and cultural
13 Project 65 plus The goals: social inclusion of senior citizens and their active involvement in cultural and social events The project includes: - With the book to the door delivery of books to senior citizen s homes in Zagreb - Art workshop - Class of information literacy for older people (computer work-shops, internet workshops) - Generation encounters
14 Seekers / Children's Reading Blog presents online journal about reading and read books, with comments and discussion ( intended for children ages 8-13 who love books and reading joined project was founded in 2011 by librarians of public libraries in City of Zadar, Rijeka, Bjelovar and today more public libraries became contributing members in the project (in Vinkovci, Zagreb, Đurđevac) blog administrators are librarians who set topics on book discussion weakly, and children (members of
15 Seekers / Children's Reading Blog The goals of the reading club: - finding good books and interesting materials for children - promotion of reading and books as a quality and interesting way of spending free time - creating a reading habit - expanding knowledge - encouragement of imagionation and creativity - encouragement for free expression of their opinion and accepting other people's opinions - using new technologies and meeting peers in virtual environment
16 Croatian Book Month takes place from October 15th until November 15th on a certain theme, consists of over 2000 programmes it's goal is to promote reading as one of the basic social values it is being held for many years in libraries throughout Croatia since 1995 Croatian Book Month is organized by Zagreb City Libraries under the patronage of Croatian Ministry of Culture event is traditionally organized at two levels: 1) central programmes (include opening programme, programme of special significance, such as opening of a new library, National Quizz for Motivation to Read aimed at the pupils of higher grades of elementary school, a traditional joined event Let's read Aloud, marking of Croatian Libraries Day, libraries' participation at the
17 Book Night event which promotes love for books and reading it marks International Book and Copyright Day (April 23rd) and Croatian Book Day (April 22nd) Book Night was launched in 2012 at the initiative of Association of Publishers and Booksellers of the Croatian Chamber of Economy and Book Block Association they are joined by National and University Library in Zagreb, Zagreb City Libraries, Association for protection of the Publishers' Rights (ZANA) and book portal Moder Times Info. Goals: - promotion of books, reading, translaton, publishing, libraries, authors and readers - connecting institutions, organizations, nonprofit and interest groups as well as companies that deal with books - improvement of cooperation between bookshops, publishers, media and government institutions - opening dialogues between book production and audience During Book Night books stores, libraries, schools, public area and institutions throughout Croatia organize various interactive programmes for general public
18 Instead of Conclusion new model of library services, librarians develope relations in the local community and becoming integrated part of community (cooperation with library users, medical staff, social workers, speech and language pathologists, volunteers) interactive library programs give added value to the local community library users and librarians beeing part of the team and have partners relationship new trends are developing in librarianship (traditional vs embeded librarianship) new concept of embedded librarianship, active librarianship, engaged librarianship, collaborative librarianship
