1 JDF with non-efi JDF-Enabled Devices JDF is an emerging industry standard for simplifying job information exchange among print and prepress applications and output devices. supports JDF for both EFI JDF- Enabled (e.g., Fiery ) and non-efi JDF-enabled devices. This document will answer some frequently asked questions about how handles JDF on non-efi JDF-enabled output devices. What are JDF and JMF? JDF (Job Definition Format) is an XML-based file format for an electronic job ticket. JDF specifies how a job is to be handled and produced. Think of the JDF file as an electronic version of a customer s specifications for a particular job. For instance, a job ticket with the customer s request for a job with these specifications: 100 copies of a 10-page document on 20# letter-size white paper, printed duplex, black-and-white would be represented in a standardized XML format readable by JDF-enabled devices, i.e., the JDF job ticket. JMF (Job Messaging Format) is the XML-based protocol JDF devices use to communicate JDF information with each other. JMF messages transmit information on events (start, stop, error), status (available, offline, etc.), results (count, waste, etc.). What type of JDF job ticket does support with non-efi JDF-enabled devices? supports intent JDF job tickets for non-efi JDF-enabled devices. An intent ticket preserves the print buyer s intention for the file (buyer-entered web-form data suggests, for example, that buyer intends to receive a 5,000 copies of a 100-page spiral bound book on 8.5x11 white paper, with a glossy 100lb. four-color cover, full color, etc.). Use this ticket type for all non-fiery JDF outputs. Note: JDF process tickets are for use only with EFI Fiery JDF-enabled output devices. What s will be in my JDF job ticket? The JDF file that is packaged with a job file (e.g., the document a buyer uploaded) will contain customer information, finished product size, media stock, and print services (see the Table on page 4 of this document for a complete list). Custom print services (i.e., those added by a administrator) will be converted to special instructions on the JDF ticket. How Does Work with JDF to non-efi Fiery-enabled Devices? The following diagram illustrates the non-fiery JDF workflow.

For the most part, will be accepting PDFs from buyers or converting non-pdf format files (e.g., Microsoft Office format files) into PDF. This default conversion to PDF enables to have a consistent internal model, allow downloadable watermarked fullresolution files, present bitmap preview images of jobs, etc. An alternative workflow is possible by uploading what we call a native file and skipping any possible conversion to PDF; in this workflow the file may be of any file type that the print shop wants to accept (there is a filter). In this native file workflow, makes no further attempt to change the format of the files. This means that the JDF and/or MIME files that emits will refer either to PDFs or to the native file type (which can be nearly anything except PDF).

3 JDF with Non-EFI JDF-Enabled Devices FAQs 3 All associated files (the buyer-uploaded file/s plus the JDF ticket and JMF messages) will be compiled into a MIME package and sent to the JDF-enabled device. (Note: This MIME package is the default option, but the administrator can opt to have the JDF file contain links HTTP or NT Shared to the files rather than the files themselves.) It is then up to the receiving system to interpret the JDF, download the files using the supplied links, and complete whatever steps are necessary to apply the relevant options to those files and print them. How do I set up a non-efi JDF-enabled device with JDF? There are two ways to connect to a non-efi JDF-enabled device: (1) through the use of a device connector that enables sending a MIME package with the files to the output device, and (2) through the use of a hot folder-based output device (that does not support HTTP protocol). Device Connectors Use this option when the output device (receiving system) supports HTTP protocol for communication. The device should expose a JMF URL that can used to request a list of virtual printers that will add to the Print Shop Connectors page. When you enter a device URL in your web browser s address field and press Enter the device will return a list of devices/virtual printers if the device URL is valid (as pictured below). When a job is printed from Operator View, will send the submit queue entry command to a specific output device through this URL (i.e., the output device-specific URL that was added to ). Note: The list of commands and queries that supports as per JDF standards are: Command: o SubmitQueueEntry Queries: o Known Devices o Status Output Device Use this option with any JDF-enabled system that does not support the HTTP protocol and uses hot folders to monitor incoming jobs. In this case, you can create an output device of type Folder and the ticket format type as JDF. This configuration enables to construct a JDF ticket (JDF/JMF compiled into a MIME package). The MIME Packaged JDF ticket is copied to a file with the file name [JobId].mjm (the file extension is per the JDF standards) and delivered to the hot folder. MIME Package: This is the extension of the file used when submitting a job.

4 JDF with Non-EFI JDF-Enabled Devices FAQs 4 mjm: Use the file extension mjm when a MIME package containing JDF or JMF is serialized and you want to have JMF as the first entity. mjd: Use the file extension mjd when a MIME package containing JDF or JMF is serialized to a file and you want to have JDF as the first entity. File Spec URL (other than the MIME package): File Spec URL as HTTP: The content file remains on the server and a URL link to the content file is embedded in the JDF. The receiving system will download the file at the linked URL locally. File Spec URL as NT Shared: The content file is copied to the NT Shared path (RPC will take care of copying the content file from to NT Shared path) and a URL link to the content file is embedded in the JDF. The receiving system will download the file at the linked URL locally. What print services map from the job ticket to non-fiery JDF-enabled output devices? The following table lists job ticket print services as they map to JDF. Note that administrator-added print services do not get mapped directly to JDF but will be included in the ticket as special instructions.
