1 Grade 12 CHY4C1 Historical Novel Study (10%) Name: Date: Mark: /200 For your ISP you must choose a historical novel from the given list (see page 4 and 5) or please see me if you a book in mind. All novels must be approved by your teacher! Your task will be to examine the historical content of this novel and outline their usefulness as a historical source. Your novel must be selected and approved no later than FEB 15. Please remember that the events of the book should take place between Your ISP will be broken up into a number of different stages with specifi due dates and will be ongoing throughout the semester. This means you will want to bring your novel to class each day, as time will be provided for reading. Stage One: (KU) Novel Choice. (15 marks Due: ) In this section you will: 1) Outline the novel you have chosen for your ISP (include Title, author, publisher, year of publication) (1 paragraph/4-5 sentences) 2) Why are you interested in this novel? (1 paragraph/5 sentences) 3) A brief summary of the historical period/event(s) of the novel. (1 paragraph/ 7 sentences) Do not just copy from the back of the book or this will result in a zero. *This report should be no less than one page in length (typed, single-spaced, 12 font, include title page) Stage Two: (KU) Progress Report A (15 marks Due: ) This report will: 1) Outline the plot up to where you have read (a) Plot: i. exposition(background): main characters, setting, history ii. Rising Action: What is the main problem, issue, etc? You should be at least pages into the book. ) (2 paragraphs/ 5 sentences each) 2) What is your level of enjoyment of this novel? Explain (1 paragraph/5 sentences) *The length of this should be no less than one page in length (typed, single-spaced, 12 font, include title page).

2 Page 2 Stage Three: (T) Historical Summary (40 marks Due: ) You will write: 1) A Historical Report that includes: a) True events that took place in your book (1 paragraph/5 marks). b) Outline the series of events that happened, who was involved and why these events were important. For example, if your book deals with social history and looks at living during a time period then you will outline what it was like to live during that time period. (2-3 paragraphs/20 marks) c) A Bibliography & Endnotes. You should use historical websites and books to back up your information. Include the sources you use in your bibliography and include endnotes (2 websites/2books/2 endnotes). Bibiliography & endnotes each go on a separate page (15 marks). *This report should be only two pages in length (typed, single-spaced, 12 font, include title page) Stage Four: (KU) Progress Report B (15 marks Due: ) This report will: 1) Outline the plot up to where you have read. (a) Rising Action: What is the main problem, issue, etc? b) Climax: Is the novel getting intense? Why? Has the main event or action take place? Explain c) Falling Action & Resolution You should be at least pages into the book. ) (2 paragraphs/ 5 sentences each) 2) What is your view of this novel at this point? Explain (1 paragraph/5 sentences) *The length of this should be no less than one page in length (typed, single-spaced, 12 font, include title page). Section Five: (C) Book Review (45 marks Due: ) This report should be four to five pages and should cover the following areas: 1) A summary of the novel and the events in it. (1 paragraph/10 marks) 2) What helped make this book historically accurate? (1-2 paragraphs/5 marks) 3) What was not historically accurate? (1-2 paragraphs/5 marks) 4) Why you think the novel would be a good source to use if you wanted to learn about the time period of the book. (1 paragraph/5 marks) 5) Why you think the book would not be useful in studying the time period. (1 paragraph/5marks) 6) Concluding thoughts (1 paragraph/5 marks) *Communication: (spelling, grammar, word choice, tense, etc ) (10 marks) * The length of this should be pages in length (typed, single-spaced, 12 font, include title page).

3 Page 3 Section Six: (App) Creating a Visual for Your Novel (70 marks Due: ) You will complete your ISP by handing in a visual application related to your ISP novel and time period studied. This visual product may include: A series of sketches of scenes from the novel; A painting of an important part of the novel; An example of clothing from the period; An example of objects or items used by the people in the time period; A model/diorama of an event from the novel; A three minute movie trailer on your novel; The front page of a newspaper outlining your novels events, etc You must conference three times with your teacher to get approval for your visual, to negotiate the success criteria, and to get feedback before the due date.
