12 The Instruction set out, on a step by step basis, the actions to be taken. First, all the books are to be numbered. Next, the bibliographic information on each work is to be written on the back of a playing card. The cards are then put in alphabetical order, fastened together, and the cards are sent to Paris, while a copy remains in each library.

17 A MARC record is a MA chine-readable Cataloging record. And what is a machinereadable cataloging record? Machinereadable: "Machine-readable" means that one particular type of machine, a computer, can read and interpret the data in the cataloging record.... (MARC records often contain much additional information.)

18 Introduction to MARC was developed by Henriette Avram at the Library of Congress in the late 1960s to enable the transfer and manipulation of catalog data by computers. Instead of having to re-type the same information again and again on 3" x 5" index cards, catalogers could re-purpose information already entered, add what they needed for their own use, and print as many cards as they needed (to file under author, title, subjects, etc.).

39 A field: Each bibliographic record is divided logically into fields. There is a field for the author, a field for title information, and so on. These fields are subdivided into one or more "subfields."
