Pennington School's 2016 Rising First Grade List The purpose of the Summer Reading Program is to encourage students to enjoy quality literature and to continue developing independent reading skills.

Students in grade 1 will complete a list of books read.

1 Pennington School's 2016 Rising First Grade List The purpose of the Summer Reading Program is to encourage students to enjoy quality literature and to continue developing independent reading skills. Pennington students are expected to participate in the program. Students in grade 1 are required to read (or be read to) a minimum of five books during the summer months. Students in grade 1 will complete a list of books read. The documentation is to include the name of the author, the title of the book, and a parent or guardian statement that the student has completed the required reading. A reading log is provided for that purpose and must be turned in during the first week of school. For students who participate in the Prince William County Public Library's Summer Reading program, that documentation will apply. Students in grade 1 will receive an extra S+ for each book completed, for a total of five S+ grades. Documentation turned in after Friday, September 2, 2016, will not receive a grade. The following titles are suggestions for summer reading. Other books selected by the student with guidance from a parent/guardian and/or librarian may be used.

2 Summer Reading List for Rising First Graders Adler, David A. Don t Throw it to Mo! (2015) Mo is a football-crazy kid that s smaller and younger than anyone else on the team. But Mo s coach has a plan to turn Mo s little size into a big win for the team. Winner of the (2016) Theodor Seuss Geisel Award. Like to read more Mo? The series continues with Get a Hit, Mo! (2016). Bardhan-Quallen, Sudipta. Duck, Duck, Moose! (2014) Duck and Duck busily prepare for a party, while their housemate, Moose, only gets in the way. Barnett, Mac. Sam & Dave Dig a Hole (2014) Sam and Dave are digging a hole and they will not stop until they find something spectacular. The official book trailer is found here: Bonwill, Ann. I am not a Copycat (2013) Hugo Hippo is trying to demonstrate through his water ballet that he is unique, but Bella Bird insists on copying his every move. I Don t Want to be a Pea (2012) is another title featuring Bella and Hugo. Byrne, Richard. This Book Just Ate My Dog! (2014) Bella s dog gets swallowed up by the book as she walks him across the page. Everyone who shows up to help falls in too, including Bella. Young readers to the rescue in this metafiction tale. Carter, David A. Bugs at the Beach (2016) Bugs take a trip to the beach to build sand castles, swim, and have fun in this early chapter book. Capucilli, Alyssa Satin. Biscuit Enjoy the adventures of a little yellow dog. Read any book in the series. Dean, James. Pete the Cat: Play Ball! (2013) Pete the Cat always tries his best when he plays baseball.

Penny and Her Doll (2012) Penny instantly loves the doll her grandmother sends her, but finding the perfect name for her is a challenge. Heling, Kathryn. Clothesline Clues to Sports People Play (2015) Using the image of uniforms and equipment hanging on a clothesline, the text invites children to identify the sport played by each child. Readers may also enjoy Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do (2012). Gender stereotypes often associated with several occupations are avoided in a nice mix. Hoberman, Mary Ann. You Read to Me, I'll Read to You: Very Short Mother Goose Tales to Read Together (2005) Collection of short retellings of familiar Mother Goose fairy tales, each told in two voices designed especially for young children and adults to read together. Kang, Anna. You Are (Not) Small (2015) Two fuzzy creatures can't agree on who is small and who is big, until a couple of surprise guests show up, settling it once and for all! Winner of the 2015 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award. Lin, Grace. Twice as Silly (2014) Ling and Ting are twin sisters and they like to do silly things like plant cupcakes in the garden. Winner of the 2015 CYBILS Award, Easy Reader category. Read any book in the series. Long, Ethan. Up, Tall and High! (2012) A cast of silly birds illustrate the concepts of "up," "tall" and "high. Sequel: The Cat in the Hat Comes Back (1986). Virjan, Emma J. What this Story Needs is a Pig in a Wig (2015) Rhyming, easy-to-read text introduces an increasing, then decreasing, cast of characters sharing a boat in a moat with a pig in an enormous wig. Follow this with, What this Story Needs is a Hush and a Shush (2016). Waber, Bernard. Ask Me (2015) This is a quiet conversation between parent and child as they stroll through the neighborhood asking questions. Watercolor illustrations are well suited to the simple beauty that surrounds us every day. Watt, Melanie. Chester (2009) A self-centered cat named Chester keeps interrupting his owner as she tries to write a story about a mouse. Winner of the Virginia Readers Choice Award. Willems, Mo. The Pigeon Needs a Bath (2014) The Pigeon is dirty and he needs a bath. It's going to take some serious convincing to try and get the Pigeon to take the plunge. Read any book in the series. Yoon, Salina. Found (2014) When Bear finds a toy rabbit in the forest, he does his very best to return it to his home. By the time the owner appears, Bear has become very attached to Bunny. This is simple story with emotion and a happy ending. Willems, Mo. We are in a Book! (2010) Expect to laugh out loud when you read this delightful title in the Elephant and Piggie series. Winner of the Virginia Readers Choice Award. The 25 th and final book in the series, The Thank You Book, was released May 3, 2016.
