DESCRIPTION: This course is an introduction to research and the Turabian format. Topics will include pre-research, search strategies, database searching, note taking, evaluating resources, formatting a paper in the Turabian style, and building citations. (Fee: $25) * This is a blended class, meaning that both campus and online students take this class together. Campus students attend the classes in person, online students attend the classes via the online classroom. All interaction and assignments for campus and online students are done in the online classroom. II. OBJECTIVES: A. General competencies to be achieved. The student should: 1. Explain the steps to pre-research 2. Demonstrate a basic research process 3. Show the steps to format a paper in Turabian format Our Mission: To Live According to a Biblical Worldview and Serve

2 Page 2 B. Specific competencies to be achieved. The student will: 1. Develop a pre-research method 2. Build search strategies to aid the research process 3. Compile an annotated bibliography from a Biblical perspective 4. Model correct Turabian format for research papers 5. Compile a reference list and in-text citations according to Turabian. III. REQUIREMENTS. (List and describe what is required in the course, assignments, due dates, exam dates, etc. Must include all items listed below that will be graded.) A. Participate in the class. Do not turn off your computers when you are done! B. Homework 1. Read the text and complete any exercises assigned for the next class period. 2. Turn in homework at the beginning of class. 3 Page 3 Attendance policy: Students are expected to attend all scheduled meetings of the course. A student who miss more than one class will have his/her grade for the course lowered by one letter grade. Classes missed due to official school sponsored events or functions are not considered part of the general absence policy of Calvary. Tardy policy: One absence will be assessed for every two times a student is tardy to class for a total of 30 minutes or less (being late to class, leaving early, etc.). Students who are tardy from a class for more than 30 minutes will be assessed one absence for that class. V. MATERIALS (Required textbooks, optional textbooks, and other materials. To facilitate academic level study, students are required to use for assignments and research an English translation or version of the Bible based on formal equivalence (meaning that the translation is generally word-for-word from the original languages), including any of the following: New American Standard (NASB, English Standard Version (ESV), New King James (NKJV), or King James (KJV). Other translations and versions based on dynamic equivalence (paraphrases, and thought-for-thought translations like NLT and NIV) may be used as supplemental sources. Please ask the professor if you have questions about a particular translation or version. Plagiarism is defined as copying any part of a book or paper without identifying the author. This also includes taking another person s ideas and presenting them as your own.

Student tutors aid with all facets of the writing process, tutor in various subject areas, prepare students for exams, and facilitate tests. Please take advantage of this service. VII.
