Multi Cultural Books 4
5 Title of Book: World Holidays: A Watts Guide for Children Author s Name: Heather Moehn Publisher: Copyright Year: 2000 Reading Level: 6 th grade Genre: Multi Cultural This book is a mixture of stories concerning different holidays and observances from around the world. It includes civic, religious, and cultural practices from different countries. It also includes the holidays and observances that the United States practices. This book in written in alphabetical order to it is easier to find holidays or observances. It is a real interesting book that broadens a student s perspective on the world. This book s theme will allow a student to understand different cultural holidays and observances other than his/her own. Have each student pick a different holiday or celebrations that they do not know much about, and have them teach the class about it. They should also include a two page essay/paper concerning their topic. They will have to have a visual to their presentation (example poster) and information about that holiday or celebration. They will be expected to find other sources than this book. Examples are online sources, personal interviews with people, etc. This is my own idea Work in small groups, no more than 4, to perform a presentation for the class. This presentation would include either a skit, food, or dance that is native to one of the students in the group. The students will plan out an outline of their skit, food, or dance to be turned in and graded to their performance. This is my own idea
6 Title of Book: Pueblo Boy Growing Up in Two Worlds Author s Name: Marcia Keegan Publisher: Cobblehill Books/Dutton Copyright Year: 1991 Reading Level: 6 th grade Genre: Multi Cultural This book is about a young boy growing up in the San Ildefonso Pueblo. This is my own idea Have them build a Pueblo village using clay and other objects. This is my own idea
7 Title of Book: Fiesta! : Mexico s Great Celebrations Author s Name: Elizabeth Silverthorne and illustrated by Jan Davey Ellis Publisher: Millbrook Press Copyright Year: 1992 Reading Level: 5 th grade Genre: Multi Cultural This story is Mexico s Great Celebrations. Students will learn about Mexico s celebrations. Have the students write in their journals and illustrate a celebration that their family participates in. This is my own idea Have the students make a word wall with Hispanic words that relate to Mexican celebrations. This is my own idea
8 Title of Book: Candy shop Author s Name: Jan Wahl and illustrated by Nicole Wong Publisher: Charlesbridge; Watertown, MA Copyright Year: 2004 Reading Level: 4 th grade Genre: Multi Cultural A boy and his aunt learn about a new lady in town Miz Chu, an immigrant from Taiwan.
