20 Cavan County Archives Service Cavan County Archives Service collects archives which relate to County Cavan from both public and private sources. Collections: Cavan County Archives Service collects archives which relate to County Cavan from both public and private sources. Public sources include current and now dissolved local government bodies in Cavan, for example, Cavan County Council, Corporations, Town Commissions, Town Councils, Rural and Urban District Councils, the Grand Jury and Poor Law Unions which were responsible for workhouses. The earliest documents date from the mid-seventeenth century. The collective impact of these archives is to document the development of the county and to record the interaction between local government and the county's citizens. Local authorities have always been responsible for the provision of a wide range of services to the citizens they serve and collections can be surprisingly rich. Archives are collected from private sources such as schools, businesses (for example, photographers, solicitors and architects), community groups and societies, hospitals, private individuals and families and landed estates. Donating Archives: We are continually seeking new items to add to the collection. If you have archives you would like to donate to the Archives, please Contact Us. Research: Cavan County Archives Service makes archives available for research to members of the public through its Reading Room. The Reading Room is open by appointment. Please Contact Us to make an appointment. Appointments are available between 9.15am-5pm, Monday-Friday. Address: Johnston Central Library & Farnham Centre, Farnham Street, Cavan Telephone: +353 (0) archives@cavancoco.ie 20

22 Christ Church Cathedral Archives The records of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, which was founded in the early eleventh century, are, not surprisingly, among the most important collections in the country. Contact Details: Dr Kenneth Milne, Hon. Keeper of the Archives or Dr Stuart Kinsella, Research Advisor. Opening Hours: By appointment Description of the Collection: The records of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, which was founded in the early eleventh century, are, not surprisingly, among the most important collections in the country. Like most other Irish archives, they have had their vicissitudes, and in the course of almost a thousand years a great deal has either been lost or dispersed. Nonetheless, much material survives in Dublin, and may be consulted either at the Library of the Representative Church Body ( ) or the cathedral itself, by arrangement. In the RCB Library is to be found a wealth of Christ Church documentation. Undoubtedly the long runs of chapter records and guard books are the main sources for historians, but the Black Book (late 13th - early 16th century) and the White Book (late 15th, early 16th century) are the greatest treasures, compilations of fascinating, if sometimes unreliable, information. The RCB Library also has a remarkable collection of MS music from Christ Church. The musicologist whose researches are in the field of printed music will find an equally rich vein of material in the cathedral itself, where there is also to be found a great number of secondary works on its history. The cathedral has also assembled, either on microfilm or by photocopying, much of the primary material that rests in other repositories. Additional collections at the cathedral include a series of service sheets and music lists for the cathedral from the late 19th century through the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as the liturgical library of the Very Revd Gilbert Mayes, former dean of Lismore cathedral. In the Manuscripts Department of Trinity College Library may be found the Proctor's Accounts of , together with papers collected by William Monk Mason for an abortive History of Christ Church. The National Library of Ireland has a remarkable collection of high quality photographs taken during the major restoration work of the 1870s. The National Archives possesses a calendar of Christ Church deeds, all the more valuable because the originals were destroyed in 1922, (although much of the calendar was published in appendices to the Deputy Keeper's Reports). In Cambridge University library may be seen "The Dublin Troper", a music manuscript most probably originating from Christ Church, while the Bodleian in Oxford has what is probably the most splendid of all the volumes associated with the Cathedral: the richly illuminated "Psalter of Stephen of Derby", also known as "The Christ Church Psalter". 36 Derry and Raphoe Diocesan Library Collection About the Project: The University of Ulster and the Church of Ireland Diocese of Derry and Raphoe have agreed to house the historic Derry and Raphoe Diocesan Library in the care of the University in the purpose-built Rare Books Room in the Learning Resource Centre on the Magee Campus of the University. The 5,600 printed books and pamphlets range in date from around 1480 to 1900 and cover an impressive range of subjects including theology, the classics, ecclesiastical and civil law, astronomy, mathematics, agriculture, gardening, philosophy, science, medicine and history. The majority of the books are from the 17th and 18th centuries a very significant time in British and Irish history, the Williamite Revolution and its aftermath. The Library also represents local heritage and the intellectual links between the City of Derry and the wider world during an important period in the City's history. Experts in the field of historical books have attested to the Library's importance as a source of research into local and national history. Most of the books are in their original bindings, offering a unique opportunity to study aspects of their construction, to appreciate them as artefacts, and to learn about their history and the history of the book trade. Many of the books have inscriptions or signatures of their early owners, which add to their historical value. For many decades the collection was stored in unsuitable conditions; cramped shelves and an environment susceptible to fluctuations of temperature and humidity caused deterioration in the books and their bindings, and left them difficult to handle without incurring further damage. Since the books were moved into the University in 2004, further deterioration in their condition has been halted by accommodating them in a more appropriate environment. However, the collection requires considerable investment to help conserve it and promote its historical benefits and make it available to the wider community.
