9 Banned Book List This term we thought we would make things interesting. We have sets of books that are rusting away, but they have a rich history. At one time, they were once banned from use. Why were they banned? What are their values for us today? What did the authors want you to learn and understand? Why does it all matter? Book Choices (You will choose your top three. Due on Edmodo. First come, first served!): The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman by Ernest J. Gaines o Do you like history? Imagine a story that spans the life and times of someone from civil war to the civil rights movement. This is a riveting tale of a woman who remembers the good and challenging times during this span of American History. A must read if you love a good story. The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George o Again, a piece of historical fiction! AND..Changes, Accusations, Transitions and Judgments. The Witch of Blackbird Pond is set in Connecticut in the late 1600s. It tells the story of Kit Tyler, a 16-year-old girl who sails from Barbados to Connecticut after her grandfather passes away. Connecticut was a Puritan community struggling for independence from England and the culture shock is difficult for Kit, who grew up affluent and independent. Kit's troubles get worse when she becomes friends with an old Quaker woman people called the Witch of Blackbird Pond. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain o An adventure story. Kids will be kids. In this adventure story, set in a time long ago, a tween orphan and his friends get into a lot of mishaps. Some of them very serious. There are funny times and challenging times, but the adventures in this story makes this a beloved and timeless tale. If you love to learn clever ways of entertaining yourself as a tween, this book is for you! Call of the Wild by Jack London o How about an adventure involving a dog? Jack London, one of the many celebrated authors of our time, writes his favorite type of tale; a tale in the wild. This is a gripping tale of a heroic dog that, thrust into the brutal life of the Alaska Gold Rush, ultimately faces a choice between living in man's world and returning to nature. If adventure is your middle name, you will love this tale. Fahrenheit 41 by Ray Bradbury

10 o Do you like Hunger Games, The Maze Runner? Stories that make you think about life and society. Then, you will love this story! Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, and firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. This is a thought provoking tale that has been hailed as the book of predictions about our present-day world. Why don t you see if what they are saying is true? I think you might find out that it is? Or is it? The Diary of Ann Frank by Frances Goodrich & Albert Hackett (Drama) o Diaries can be so juicy and entertaining. Reading someone s thoughts about what is going on in their life, from their point of view. Imagine reading the thoughts of a 13- year-old during World War II, specifically the Holocaust. How did it feel to be someone your age at that time? Anne begins her diary when she is 13 years of age and the Jews are already wearing yellow stars in Amsterdam. Anne is your usual precocious girl, flirting with boys and being impudent when she can get away with it. When, at last, the time comes for the Franks to go into hiding (Margot Frank, Anne's sister, has been issued an order for her removal) they do so with another family, the Van Daans. Over the course of the diary we watch and listen through Anne's eyes as, for two years, the people in the attic are put through terrible deprivations and trials. There are good times and bad, but Anne is a singularly biased narrator and her observations must usually be taken with a grain of salt. After a while you become so comfortable with Anne's observations and voice that the final page of the narrative comes as a shock. Don t miss the suspense of this eternal voice. Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor o What was it like growing up during the time of Jim Crow Laws and Segregation? This book is a fun but eye-opening story about a girl and her family, who learn interesting lessons about growing up in times that were not always so pleasant! There are good times, but then there are challenging lessons to learn and certain realities that must be faced. Don t miss out on this journey back in time, in our very own region of the U.S.A.
