2 Teaching about Communities? If so, check this out This is my Rural, Urban, and Suburban Flip Flap Book! It is Interactive, Fun, and especially Engaging! Click the image above to check it out in my TPT Shop!
3 This is a completed Rural, Urban and Suburban Flip Flap Book that my students made! It is chock full of informational writing and an opinion writing task at the end! Click the image to check out this resource in my TPT Shop!
4 What materials do you need to provide to create the Communities Lapbook and Foldables? Every child needs one full file folder. You will also need an additional file folder for the flip-up center of the lapbook. You will have to cut off the flaps of the second file folder and use clear packing tape to attach the center flip page to the other file folder. The students will need, scissors, glue, and crayons or colored pencils.
5 Matchbook Foldables For best results, print the first page of the foldable on your home printer. After the page prints, re-feed the page into your printer and print the inside of the matchbook on the back. This may take a couple of tries until you figure out how to reinsert your paper into your printer to print the inside of the matchbook. You will now have a Master Copy to feed into your copy machine at school that allows you to print front-to-back copies. Cut around the gray dotted lines of the matchbook and then fold on the light gray center line. Last, fold up the title flap to show the words rural, urban, or suburban. The students can illustrate the front of the matchbook with crayons or colored pencils. My favorite way to introduce Rural, Urban, and Suburban Communities is to begin by reading the story called The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton (ISBN-13: ) Click the image here to check it out Amazon. The is an excellent way to introduce each type of community and the people, places, things, and animals that you would see. You can create an anchor chart and brainstorm these things on chart paper or the children can brainstorm these things on their own and complete the chart inside the foldable. Lastly, the students explain what a rural, urban, or suburban community is on the bottom of their matchbook foldable. After they complete their writing and illustrating, they can glue it to their lapbook.

12 My Community Pop-Up Book To begin assembly of the pop-up book, print out a copy of the pop-up book page. First, cut around the dark black border around the page. You will not use the entire sheet of 8 ½ x 11 paper. Fold the page on the light gray center line. Then refold the page the opposite way. Keep the paper folded and cut on the light gray parallel lines. Unfold the paper and refold it again with the sentence I live in a community on the inside. Now you must push in the center piece that you cut on the slits. This will give you a square looking push up on the paper and you will see a square hole behind it. Allow the students to decorate the inside of their pop-up books to show the type of community they live in. It would be extremely helpful for the students if you make a sample of the pop-up book first so they can see how it is illustrated. Give students a piece of white cardstock or colored construction paper to glue the pop up book into so you do not see the square hole that allows the pop-up to occur. Give the students a paper body cut out (boy or girl two types are available). I included 4 different options for girls and boys. You can make a few copies of each page, cut them out and allow your students to pick which kid they would like to depict themselves in their pop-up book. I also included the pictures with AND without rectangles around the clipart. If your students have difficulty cutting neatly, I would suggest giving them the clipart with the rectangle around it to guide their cutting. They must write 2 clues on the front of the pop-up to describe the type of community they live in and glue it on the front cover of the pop-up book. After they complete their writing and illustrating, they can glue it to their lapbook.

19 Which Type of Community? Flip-Flap Foldable First, choose which flip-flap foldable you would like to use. Rural, Urban, or Suburban or Can you guess which type of community the pictures show? Photocopy the blackline for each student. Cut out the foldable on the OUTSIDE Black Lines. Then cut on the inside horizontal lines just to the center to make small 2 inch squares. Fold these squares to the inside of the flip-flap book covering the center of the foldable. There are small 2 inch squares of clipart that can be used for the outside of the flip-flap book or you can have your students draw pictures to show each type of community. The students will cut out the clipart squares and glue them on the flip-flap book. When you open the two squares the student will write Rural, Urban, or Suburban on the inside. They can also draw additional pictures on the inside of the 2 inch folded flaps. After they complete their writing and illustrating, they can glue it to their lapbook.
20 Cut ON the dotted gray line around the entire shape. Then cut on the short black lines toward the center to make small flaps.
21 Cut ON the dotted gray line around the entire shape. Then cut on the short black line toward the center to make small flaps.

23 Class Survey and Graph Accordion Foldable First, photocopy the first page of the Survey Foldable on your home printer. Then re-feed this page into the printer and print the back of the Survey Foldable. This will give you a Master Copy of the foldable that can now be copied on your school machine that is capable of front-to-back copies. Follow the same procedure with the Graph Accordion Foldable Cut out the foldable on the Black Outside Lines to create a long rectangle. Then, fold on the inside vertical lines to create the accordion book. You can do this survey as a class where each child tells the class their community preference or you can have the students walk around the room and ask each of their friends their community preference. They will write Tally Marks on the inside of their foldable demonstrating how many children prefer to live in an urban, rural, or suburban community grouping their tallies into groups of five and ones. After the children take their class survey, they will transfer their data to the Graph Accordion Foldable. They can color the graph boxes to represent the amount of students that prefer each type of community. After they complete their writing and illustrating, they can glue it to their lapbook.

28 Cover of your Lapbook Below is the cover Title and Illustrations for each child s lapbook. You can photocopy the page and allow each child to color and label each community and glue it on their lapbook. Another way to decorate this lapbook is to allow the students to decorate their cover any way they like.

30 Community Helpers Accordion Foldable First, photocopy the first page (title page) of the Community Helpers Accordion Foldable on your home printer. Then re-feed this page into the printer and print the back of the Accordion Foldable. This will give you a Master Copy of the foldable that can now be copied on your school machine that is capable of front-to-back copies. Then print the second page of the community helpers page. Copy these pages for your students. Cut across the top black line that says Cut Here On This Line, to make the foldable smaller. Then you must cut on the vertical line of the second page of community helpers. Then use a gluestick to glue the second page of community helpers to the first page where it says Glue Here. This will give you a long rectangle. Now fold on each vertical line on the foldable allowing the title Community Helpers to show on the top. The students can color each community worker and tell how that community worker helps the community. You can also use this foldable to teach and write about Goods and Services and Producers and Consumers. They can tell if each community worker produces a good or a service. After they complete their writing and illustrating, they can glue it to their lapbook.

36 If I could live Writing Activity Use the following pages for the students to write about what type of community they would most like to live in. There are three different blacklines to choose from; If I could live, Rural, Urban, or Suburban? or a blank sheet to allow for a different type of writing assignment. When they complete their writing assignment, they will glue it on the extra flap of the lapbook.
