Introduction As part of the New York State Standards, and as a requirement for graduation, you will complete an Exit Project. (This means that if you do not receive a passing grade on this project, you cannot pass Social Studies for the year.) You will complete a project that deals with one of the following key social studies concepts: history, geography, economics, culture, or government. The timeframe for this project is from the end of World War II until the present day. Your topic (which must be approved) can revolve around an event, a historical figure or group, or a period of time. II. The abstract should be general and simply give the reader a little background information about your topic. There should not be any overly specific details in your abstract. Your abstract should be ONE PARAGRAPH. 2) Documents and Summaries: As part of your research you will need to gather 5 documents that help to explain some of the most important aspects of your topic. Documents include photographs, illustrations, political cartoons, quotations, maps, graphs, charts, letters, speeches and other primary sources, etc. You must use a variety of documents. You may not have more than two of the same type of documents. Each document must be accompanied by its source. You must note the title and copyright year of the book or the title and the date you viewed the website from which you got the document. The title must match the title of one of the sources in your bibliography.

2 Each of your documents must have a 2-3 paragraph summary. The summary serves two purposes: (1) briefly tell the reader what the document shows and (2) use your research to explain all the facts that relate to that document. 3) Reflection Essay: As the last part of your scrapbook, you will write an essay in which you describe the significance of the topic that you have researched as part of American history. In other words, you are explaining why your topic is an important one in the history of our country. Use details from your research in order to support your answer in which you will: IV. Research Describe the effects that this topic has had on the lives of Americans or on the country as a whole (whether positively or negatively). Discuss why you think that this is a topic that should be remembered in the future. Explain how you think that our country would be different if this topic had not occurred or developed. A proper introduction, with appropriate background information, and conclusion are required. The essay should be approximately one page in length. Obviously this project will require a great deal of research. In order to fully cover your topic, you will need to use a large variety of sources (books, encyclopedias, magazines, legitimate internet sites, etc.). As a requirement for this project, you will need to use at least 8 sources (including those used to supply graphics), of which no more than half can be websites. A proper bibliography, as always, must be included with your exit project. Plagiarism is, of course, prohibited. If plagiarism is detected, a failing grade will be given for the project. V. Grading: The Exit Project will account for at a large part of your fourth marking period grade. A. The Exit Project will be graded according to the attached rubric. A copy of the rubric must be attached to your final project. Your final grade will account for two tests grades for the fourth marking period. B. Each assignment in the completion of the Exit Project (see calendar below) will be graded and contribute to a test grade for the fourth marking period. VI. 4 Scrapbook Format scrapbooks should be 8 ½ by 11 in size. You can buy a pre-made scrapbook, but one made from printer paper, cardstock, or photo paper is perfectly acceptable. Do not use large, bulky photo albums. text should be 12 pt. Times New Roman (with the exception of the cover page). The photo shows the main entrance of the building located on Oceania Street in Bayside, New York. Middle School 74 opened in It celebrated its 50 th anniversary in 2004 by welcoming alumni and special guests for a celebration. It currently has a population of approximately 1,100 students. Your reflection essay must be double spaced. It should be placed after your 5 documents and summaries. (Page 7) Your bibliography should be on a separate page. It should also be the last page of your scrapbook. (Page 8) It is considered one of the top middle schools in New York City. It regularly ranks in the top 1% of middle schools on standardized tests. In June of 2009, over 90% of Middle School 74 8 th graders scored a Level 3 or Level 4 on New York State science, mathematics, social studies and science exams. 2
