QuinewasborninAkron,OhioonJune25,1908andattendedOberlinCollegewhere hereceivedtheb.a.inmathematicsin1930.hecametoharvarduniversityasagraduate studentin1930andremainedaffiliatedwithharvardfortherestofhislife.hecompleted hisph.d.underalfrednorthwhiteheadin1932andspent ineuropeasa SheldonFellow.In1933hewaselectedtothefirstgroupofJuniorFellowsoftheHarvard SocietyofFellows,wasaninstructorinphilosophyfrom1936to1941,associateprofessor from ,andprofessorbeginningin1948.in1956hebecametheedgarpierce ProfessorofPhilosophyatHarvard,apositionhehelduntilhisretirementin1978.He marriedhisfirstwifein1930,naomiclaytonquine,laterdivorced,andin1948married MarjorieBoyntonQuine,whodiedin1998.QuinediedonDecember25,2000andwas survivedbyfourchildren:elizabethquineroberts,normaquine,douglasquine,and MargaretQuineMcGovern.
