I m Kara Ripley, the new Adult Services and Outreach Librarian here at Oregon Public Library. I have a masters in library science from Indiana University, Bloomington and have been working as a librarian for the past 10 years. I m very excited to be here! Friends of the Oregon Library and the community will dearly miss Joan Wethal who passed away Feb. 7, Before retiring several years ago, Joan was director of the Oregon library for 31 years when it was located in the village hall and when it moved to the current Oregon Senior Center building until the current library space was built in the mid 1990 s. Joan actively participated in FOL book sales from the founding of Friends of the Oregon Library which was organized to ensure that the current library building would be constructed! To the public Joan was a wise and patient FOL book sale cashier. To the Friends Joan was also a patient mentor, teaching volunteers how to efficiently sort donated books and organize the sale space. In the community she was active at the Oregon Senior Center, reading and knitting clubs and an active poll worker during local voting. Folks are usually aware of the important role that libraries play in a child s life, but remember, learning does not end when you leave school. The library is here to support your educational needs, personal interests, and civic responsibilities. I am proud to be supporting lifelong learners in the Oregon area. So far, in my first month, I ve learned what a wonderful and dedicated staff the library has as I ve been patiently trained on all the procedures that keep the library running. As I begin my 2nd month at OPL, I will be getting to know the community of library users and working to support your needs. Stop in and say hi! 1

2 HOW CAN YOU HELP THE FUND RAISING EFFORTS OF FOL? Here are three easy ways to help us continue to collect much needed money to support the Library's programs. 1) Collect all your Bill's Grocery Store receipts. Bring them to the Library and place them in the small decorated box on the "New Books" shelves. The box is to your right as you enter the Library. Bill's Grocery Store donates 1% back to FOL which helps fund special programs at the library. 2) Donate your gently used books, games, and puzzles for the book sales. You can bring them any time the library is open: just give them to the staffer at the Circulation Desk. If you have more than you can carry inside, call the Library at to arrange a more convenient way to donate your books. Our next sale is April 13 th and 14th. 3) Use Amazon Smiles for all your Amazon orders. Simply go to this website: Select Friends of the Oregon Library as your charity of choice. You can link to your existing Amazon account so you don't have to start new passwords, etc. Now when you shop, enter the Amazon website via SMILE.AMAZON.COM to be sure your purchase counts toward their giving. Amazon donates 0.5% of each qualifying purchase to us. They automatically send us a check every 6 months. THANK YOU to all who have donated in large and small ways. We are thrilled to see the items, programs and services that our fund raising has provided for Oregon Library users. The whole community benefits when our library is strong and vibrant! HOW DOES THE LIBRARY USE FUNDS FROM FOL? Performers and/or presenters for adult and youth programs at all seasons Supplies for adult and youth programs Summer library programs prizes Button making kit purchased in 2017; especially popular with youth Constant Contact service for online distribution of program notices to library subscribers Access to Cava for Work, an online program to create awesome signs for inside the library and for social media LANDSCAPE VOLUNTEER INVITATION With spring fast approaching, everyone is thinking about their gardens again, and here at the library, we are too! We have a small group of dedicated volunteers who care for the planting beds around the parking lot and at the library entrance. If you think you might be interested in spending a little time weeding and pruning, or would be willing to pitch in for the occasional project, like spreading new mulch, let us know! You can indicate your interest on your Friends of the Library membership renewal form, or give Barb Skiles (Garden Volunteer Coordinator) a call. Her number is No special skills are needed, and the commitment can be as big or small as you like. It s a great way for you to give back to the library, and we re always glad to have an extra pair of hands in the garden! 2

3 SUMMER READING PROGRAM FOR All Ages June 4 th -August 11 th Mark your calendars! Summer reading starts on June 4 th. The Library has a program for any age baby to child to teen to adult! Special events include musician Laura Doherty, Mr. Marvel s Bubble Show, and Magic Morgan and Liliana along with annual lock-in for tweens and young teens, escape rooms, LEGO Expo, STEM and craft activities and much more! Information on events and prizes will be available in May! Ms. Kelly and Ms. Wendy, the Youth Services staff, will visit each elementary school and Rome Corners Intermediate to talk about the summer happenings at the public library and the importance of reading during the break to maintain their reading skills. The Friends are the main sponsor of the summer reading program. The funds pay for the performers, craft supplies, and prizes. We are able to give each child and teen that completes the program a new paperback book. BOOK CLUBS FOR ADULTS Great Beginnings Book Club First Wednesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. at the Oregon Area Senior Center Bring your library card to check out next month's title. Copies of the next title are also available at the library. Coffee provided. April 4 - The Underground Railroad, by Colson Whitehead May 2 - Whistling in the Dark, by Lesley Kagen June 6 - The Scent of Rain and Lightning, by Nancy Pickard Brown Bag Book Club Third Wednesday of the month at 11:30 a.m. Bring your own lunch. Chocolate provided. Copies of the next title are available at the library. April 18 - The Cellist of Sarajevo, by Steven Galloway May 16 - Some Luck, by Jane Smiley June 20 - The Girl on the Train, by Paula Hawkins ONLINE BOOK CLUB FOR TEENS AND ADULTS Monday through Friday, receive a five-minute selection from a chapter of a book in your and for a 2-3 chapter sample. Click the Online Book Clubs icon at to sign up. There are eleven genres to choose from. Paid for by the Friends of the Oregon Library. EVENT FOR TEENS Anime Night! 3rd Thursday of the month 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm Love anime and manga? Attendees will snack, watch and chat with fellow fans about anime and manga. We'll also plan which anime we'll watch for upcoming meetings. For ages 12 and up. No registration required. Anime is the Japanese style of animation. Manga is the comic book version. EVENTS FOR CHILDREN Storytimes Spring session runs April 17 th May 11 th. Summer sessions starts June 19 th. Storytime is a great place for young children to develop early literacy and social skills. Registration is not required. 3

4 Weekly Storytimes Bouncing Babies Storytime - Tuesdays at 11 am 15 minutes of stories, rhymes, and song, and 15 minutes of play time for children and caregivers. For ages 0-18 mos. Teetering Toddler Time - Tuesdays at 10 am A very active storytime for a very active age. For ages 18 mos. 3. Everybody Storytime - Wednesdays and Fridays at 10 am For ages 0-6. Monthly Storytime Pajama Antics Evening Storytime Dates: April 11 th and May 14 th at 6:30 pm Enjoy puppets, stories, songs, and activities based on the month s theme. Tinker Tuesdays Tuesdays, April 17 May 8 Kids in grades K- 4 explore STEM concepts through play using plugged and unplugged tools. Registration is not required DID YOU KNOW? The Library has seeds! Borrowing seeds from Oregon Public Library is free and easy as 1, 2, 3! 1. Select seeds and check them out from the library. 2. Grow your plants and enjoy the harvest. 3. Collect and return some seeds if you are able. There is no penalty for not returning seeds. By participating in the seed library you are helping to create a culture of sharing and community. Saving seeds leads to a sustainable future for your community and your garden. If you already save seeds, consider donating to our seed library. Seeds are not the only unusual item the Library has to check out. We have over 25 cake pans, a telescope, early literacy backpacks, circular knitting looms, Kill A Watt reader, Kindles, a variety of STEM maker kits and nature backpacks. 5 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BOOK SALE To help move books from storage on Union Road to Sue Ames Room at the library on Saturday, April 7, 8 9:00 AM. Boxes of books and folding tables may be heavy. To help sort books and organize the sale room on Saturday morning, Monday, Tuesday and/or Wednesday morning or afternoon, April 7 and April To help with bag sale on Saturday, April 14, 1-3 PM. To help clear the Sue Ames Room after the sale and return tables and boxes to storage on Saturday, April 14, 3-4 PM. Please contact Sue Johnson, , to volunteer or for additional information. SPRING USED BOOK SALE BEGINS FRIDAY APRIL 13 PREVIEW SALE FOR CURRENT FOL MEMBERS 3-4 PM Any FOL member with physical limitations may request early entry at 2:30 PM at the back door of the Sue Ames sale room (through the Children's section of the Library). You will be allowed in to shop until 3 PM when you must leave by the same back door. You are more than welcome to re-enter with the rest of the members at the front door or later during the sale. BOOK SALE OPENS TO THE PUBLIC 4-7 PM FRIDAY APRIL 13 and 9 AM 3 PM SATURDAY APRIL 14 ** $3.00 bag sale 1-3 PM** If you have materials to donate for the book sale, please leave them at the library before Wednesday April 11. 5
