1 Bok Academy Summer Reading Program 6 th Grade Dear Bok Family, We hope you are looking forward to a relaxing and rejuvenating summer. We are reminded by the novelist George R.R. Martin, A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies and the man who never reads lives only one. We also hope during the course of the summer your child will engage in activities which invite their intellectual curiosity and sustain their interest in learning, as well as develop a habit of reading. To maintain the expectations, standards, and the rigorous curriculum set forth for Bok Academy students, we expect our students to complete a Summer Reading Packet. The students will be expected to turn it in to their reading teacher the first week of the school year. Sixth-grade students are to select one fiction chapter book of their choice to read. We encourage students to read books that are within their comfort reading range; more importantly, we want students to read a book that they enjoy! Upon completion of the reading, students will select a book report to complete from the provided packet to demonstrate their understanding of the book. As part of your summer vacation plans, we invite you to check out the free Find a Book utility, to quickly and easily search for books that will match your child s reading level and interests, as well as locate your selection at the local public library. All forms can be downloaded from the Bok Academy website at The Lake Wales Public Library is a great resource to find additional books of your choice. 3 Bok Academy Grade 6 Summer Reading Fiction Book Report Choice #1 Name: Title of Book: Author: Who were the main characters? List 2 characteristics of each main character citing text evidence. What was the setting of the story? when: where: Give one example of a conflict (problem) in the story? (Give details to explain who was involved and what the problem was about)

4 What was the solution to the conflict? Choice #1 List three interesting events that happened in the story. What is one theme of the story? Cite text evidence. (Theme - central topic or idea in a text. Usually the theme of a work of literature can be stated in one word, such as love or solitude. A work of literature can, and often does, have more than one theme) Why was the story interesting to you? Create a new resolution (ending) to the story.

5 Choice #2 Name: Follow these steps to create your own online book report. Step 1: Read a fiction book that is on your appropriate reading level. Step 2: Complete the story map (on the back) with information from the book you read. Step 3: Choose your format. There are many ways to present your online book report. No matter how you choose to present it, you must include ALL of the information from your story map. Format Choices - You may choose only ONE: Create a Prezi - Create a movie about you book using one of these apps: Educreations, Puppet Pals, Toontastic, or Videolicious, Use imovie to create a movie trailer depicting a movie based off the book Use Google Slides or PowerPoint to create a presentation based on the story map you completed Step 4: No matter the format, you need to edit and revise your work to ensure that it is your best possible work before publishing. Step 5: Publish your Book Report. Copy or share the link with your reading teacher and turn in the story map.

7 Choice #3 Bok Academy Summer Reading Menu Fiction Book Report Name: Book Title: Book Author: After reading the fiction book of your choice, you are to create a book menu for the restaurant T.G.I. Fiction based on your reading. Follow the instructions on the back to complete your menu. Presentation of your menu is up to you. Suggestions include: card stock, file folder, colored paper, construction paper.
