BOOKS AT JSTOR books.jstor.org
BOOKS AT JSTOR Program was developed after surveys of librarians and faculty showed desire to access ebooks on JSTOR Aims to have transformative effect on digital transition for monographs, as JSTOR did for journals over the past two decades Updates to program are based on feedback from librarians and scholars in surveys, ebook forums, and advisory group meetings JSTOR has a not-for-profit mission to partner with librarians, publishers, and scholars to build sustainable models and practices that meet the evolving needs of the scholarly community
OUTSTANDING MONOGRAPH CONTENT More than 50,000 academic titles; new titles added every week 135+ publisher partners, including top university presses, scholarly associations, public policy organizations, and high-quality commercial presses Visit books.jstor.org for a full list of participating publishers Books at JSTOR includes titles from publishers in 24 countries
EXPANDING INTERNATIONAL CONTENT Aim to make important scholarship from around the world discoverable to all researchers Complements the global content in JSTOR s journal program 56% of participating ebook publishers are based in countries other than the United States University presses and other publishers that meet JSTOR s standards for quality More than 2,700 titles available in 11 languages other than English 1,800 Spanish-language ebooks 250 Portuguese-language ebooks 365 French-language ebooks

OUTSTANDING USER EXPERIENCE Unlimited, DRM-free access Unlimited concurrent use Unlimited DRM-free chapter downloads that never expire Unlimited printing and copy/paste allowed No need to log in or use special software Works just like journal content on JSTOR
CURRENT AND BACKLIST COVERAGE Frontlist titles published in : 6,500+ (14% of all titles) Recent backlist titles published in : 31,000+ (65% of all titles) Earlier backlist titles published in : 10,500+ (21% of all titles) 4000 Titles Available by Copyright Year
THE VALUE OF BACKLIST TITLES If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants. Isaac Newton, 1676 A 2016 analysis by a London School of Economics professor revealed that 76% of the 50 most cited social sciences books had been published more than 25 years earlier New research builds on the scholarship that came before it, and JSTOR brings this vast expanse of knowledge together in one place The ease of discovering this backlist monograph content on JSTOR, alongside comprehensive journal backfiles, enables scholars to understand and build upon the history of their fields In a recent analysis of institutions that have activated at least 31,000 ebooks on JSTOR, 84% of the usage was associated to backlist titles with a copyright year of 2014 or earlier Libraries that acquire backlist titles may be able to reduce storage and ILL costs for print copies
BACKLIST DIGITIZATION Partnership with Yale University Press Digitized 152 classic titles never before available electronically Originally published between 1954 and 2004 Disciplines include History, Language & Literature, Political Science, Psychology, and Philosophy Titles are available exclusively through Books at JSTOR We look forward to partnering with other publishers on initiatives to digitize backlist titles
EXPANDING ACCESS Shared goal of increasing access to scholarship and meeting research needs of users We work to find models that provide great value to libraries while remaining sustainable for university presses Flexible acquisition models developed in collaboration with librarians in order to address the challenges of existing models and create easier workflows Plus, a growing Open Access initiative to make high-quality monographs available to all researchers at no cost

Acquisition Options to Suit Your Collection Strategy Title-by-Title Selection Subject Collections GOBI Library Solutions Demand-Driven Acquisition Evidence-Based Acquisition
ACQUISITION OPTIONS Title-by-Title Selection Build your collection title-by-title according to your institution s needs We can provide holdings comparisons, ebook turnaway data, or data for journals usage by discipline at your institution to help inform your selection Frontlist Subject Collections An easy way to acquire newly-published content in key disciplines New sets are released in each collection multiple times per year, as titles are published Includes 600 titles published in 2017, and additional sets will be added throughout the year Easy to activate sets in discovery services Business & Economics Education Film Studies History Language & Literature Law Music Philosophy Plants Political Science Religion Science & Technology Sociology Sustainability
GOBI LIBRARY SOLUTIONS GOBI Acquisition Options: titleby-title firm ordering; new title notifications; or eapproval plans Tiered Savings: Once you ve enabled Books at JSTOR in your GOBI account, the prices you see in GOBI will reflect your institution s tiered savings Fast Availability: 98% of titles available through GOBI within five days after we receive them from the publisher Daily Title Updates: JSTOR sends an updated catalog to GOBI every day to ensure that the latest titles are available to libraries Workflow Support from GOBI: duplication control across formats, ebook previews, and invoicing
DEMAND-DRIVEN ACQUISITION The Demand-Driven Acquisition model allows libraries to make a large set of high-quality titles available to patrons, but only pay for those that reach a threshold of usage. Seamless User Experience Titles appear just like purchased content to users, and may be viewed and downloaded as if they were already paid for MARC records are available for all titles, and titles can be activated in discovery services A Generous Trigger Triggers are set so that only a high level of intentional usage of a title triggers an acquisition Purchase of perpetual access is triggered when usage reaches 6 chapter views or 4 chapter downloads (whichever occurs first, counted cumulatively across all user sessions) All usage below the trigger is free Perpetual Access Once a title has been triggered, the library has perpetual access to the ebook on JSTOR
DEMAND-DRIVEN ACQUISITION DEFINE YOUR BUDGET, SHAPE YOUR PROFILE JSTOR can provide projections of DDA usage and spending Based on data from institutions with similar usage patterns Takes into account the institution s archive journal usage on JSTOR and the number of titles in the proposed DDA profile Provides library with information to plan for spending or refine profile to the target expenditure Sample projection of DDA costs for one institution
DEMAND-DRIVEN ACQUISITION USAGE DATA TO INFORM COLLECTION STRATEGIES COUNTER BR2 and BR3 reports Weekly DDA usage reports showing chapter views and chapter downloads Weekly statements that list all titles triggered for purchase DDA usage summaries show usage by discipline, publisher, frontlist/backlist, and more Sample Usage Summary report
DEMAND-DRIVEN ACQUISITION GENEROUS TRIGGER, HIGH ROI FOR LIBRARIES Ebook Acquisition Trigger: 6 chapter views or 4 chapter downloads (whichever occurs first, counted cumulatively across all user sessions); this ensures that only a significant amount of usage triggers a purchase More than half of triggered purchases occurred after three or more uses of that ebook More than half of the triggered purchases occurred after being available to library users for five months or more Usage and Acquisition Rates: Among participating libraries, a median of 14% of DDA titles are used and 1% are purchased per year High Post-Purchase Usage: Titles purchased through DDA see an average of 19 chapter views and downloads over the first 12 months of access
EVIDENCE-BASED ACQUISITION This model offers unlimited access to more than 25,000 high quality backlist titles; at the end of a year-long period, the library selects titles for acquisition, taking into account the usage at their institution. Predictable Costs The upfront payment is agreed on at the outset, and there are no additional costs over the course of the period Ensures that your patrons will have access to all titles for the duration of the period Mediated Title Selection Librarians use their expertise to make final acquisition decisions, with the usage data as a guide Simple Workflows No need to deduplicate against current holdings or set up specialized profile, as there s no obligation to purchase specific titles at the end of the period Easy set up of free OCLC MARC records and activation of collection in discovery services Can combine with other models for frontlist ebook acquisitions
