2 Student Name: Lexile: PROJECT DUE DATE: 8/18/17 Project Details: This summer you will be expected to read two books. One book is the required book, The Fourth Stall, by Chris Rylander. The second book is a book of your choice. It must be age and lexile appropriate. There is a project that will accompany each book. Read directions for each project carefully and do your best work. This project will not only be your first grade for the new school year, but it is also the first impression you will make on your teacher. Take pride in your work. PROJECT 1: Read the book The Fourth Stall by Chris Rylander. (LEXILE: 760) - If you are a struggling reader, there is an audio book you can purchase online to assist you with reading the book ( or you can check the public library for an audio download. PROJECT: Complete the assignment called The One-Pager. See the instruction page that follows.this project should fit on one page (front and back of a page is acceptable). This project will show your understanding of the novel and will require you to evaluate certain aspects of the novel. PROJECT 2: Select a choice book that is at or above your lexile level (125 pages or more). Choose from one of the following projects. Follow the directions provided in this packet for the project you are choosing to complete. CHOICE 1: Create a Fakebook Page for the Main Character in your book. Use the directions provided in this packet. CHOICE 2: Create a short graphic novel that tells the story of your book in a brief and vivid way. (This is essentially like a comic that summarizes the novel). CHOICE 3: Type a detailed book review. This must explain the book (without giving away the ending), provide a rating for the book, explain what you did and didn t like, as well as tell what kind of person would enjoy this book. Read examples of book reviews online so you know what a book review sounds like. CHOICE 4: Create a One-Page for your choice book. Follow the same directions as you did for The Fourth Stall. 3 The One-Pager Book Project: 25 Points A One-Pager is a way of responding to a book on one piece of paper. It represents your own written and graphic interpretation of what you have read. In this report you will show facts and information about the book, as well as creating a visual representation of the book. Directions: Must be on standard sized (8 ½ x 11), unlined paper. This may be typed or neatly written using black or blue ink. Images should be colored. Be sure your first and last name are clearly written on your project. Be creative and thoughtful. It is meant to be a challenge to truly represent your experience of a book in such a small space. Arrange the following required elements on the page in any way you choose (ALL are required for full points): 1. Title and author of the book. 2. A 3-5 paragraph summary of the story s plot (fiction) or what the book is about (nonfiction). 3. Name(s) and brief description(s) of the main character(s) (fiction) or person(s) involved (nonfiction). 4. Describe the setting; time, place, social conditions, atmosphere (and whether these elements change or don t). 5. Include 5-10 vocabulary words with definitions and the page # where the word can be found in your book. Choose words from the book that were unfamiliar to you. 6. Include 2 quotes that are important to the story. Include the page number and who said the quote. 7. Have at least one graphic representation: a drawing, magazine picture, or computer graphic that relates to the book you read and the quotes you chose and caption the image in order to explain how the graphic relates to the novel. 8. Rate the book from 1-5 stars (5 being best) and explain why you gave this rating. 9. What is a theme or message in the book? Explain how this theme or message applies. In addition: Fill the entire page (very little white space left showing). Writing must be in ink or typed no pencil.

4 FAKEBOOK PAGE: 25 Points Use the template below to assist you in completing this project. Create a Fakebook page on a clean piece of paper. This page should represent the main character of your book or the primary person you read about. This is an excellent project choice for both a fiction or non-fiction novel with a strong main character or featured individual. It is recommended that you type this project piece. Images should be colored and show obvious effort (even if you are not a Picasso).

5 GRAPHIC NOVEL: You are essentially being asked to create a comic-like story that retells the story of your novel in a fun and concise way. This is a graphic summary. It should be colorful and well thought out. A graphic novel looks like this (25 Points) - Booklet format - Colorful and creative. - Retells story of novel. - Includes your name & book title Book Review: 25 Points Write a detailed book review where you tell about the book you read and reflect and critique the book. Include the following: Book title, author, rating for the book (1-5 stars) and your reason for the rating, a summary of the book that does not give away the ending, what would you change about the book, who would you recommend this book to and why.
