5 Administrative History The Normal News began in 1881, before becoming the Eastern Echo in It is an independent student paper, meaning that it is funded through advertising revenue and the university exercises no editorial control over the paper. The Eastern Echo has won numerous awards from the Associated Collegiate Press and the Michigan Collegiate Press Association. Scope and Contents The collection covers the business, organizational, and financial activities of the Normal News beginning in 1881, and after 1956 continues to document the activities of the Eastern Echo. Financial records are particularly well-represented in the 1930s and 1940s, as well as by a bound cash book from the period Another bound book documents the Proceedings of the Normal News Committee from 1937 to News clippings highlighting notable events in the newspaper's history date from 1940 to Two copies of the magazine "The 'U' and You" from 1974 and 1975 are also included. Correspondence relates particularly to soliciting book reviews in the 1980s, but there are also a few other letters in the collection from earlier dates. A small paperback style guide from 1928 is included, as well as two other sets of guidelines for staff from the 1930s and 1940s.
