READING/WRITING SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS GRADES 6-8

1 GRADE 6 All students in Grade 6 will read: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan The student will have to complete two written assignments one for each book. One will be a movie review, the other will be journal entries of their chosen character. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe: Students will write a book review of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. This will be written in the student s voice as a book critic, awarding the book either a thumbs up or a thumbs down rating. This critique should include a review of the plot, the genre, the theme, characterizations and overall rating and impression. (At least one typed page. 12 pt. font. Times New Roman. Doublespaced.) The Red Pyramid: Students will write five journal entries in the voice of their chosen character in the book, The Red Pyramid. Each journal entry should be at least one paragraph (5-7 sentences) and include details from the plot and extended understanding of the theme.

2 GRADE 7 My Brother Sam is Dead by James and Christopher Collier The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Curtis The student will have to complete two written assignments, a different one for each book. One will be a book review, the other will be journal entries of a chosen character. Students may choose which assignment to complete for each book. 3 GRADE 8 Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor Close to Shore, The Terrifying Shark Attacks of 1916 by Michael Capuzzo The student will have to complete two written assignments, a different one for each book. One will be a book review, the other will be journal entries of a chosen character. Students may choose which assignment to complete for each book. Book Review: Students will write a book review for the book. This will be written in the student s voice as a movie critic, awarding either a thumbs up or a thumbs down rating. 4 SUMMER MATH WORK FOR OUTGOING 6TH GRADE Outgoing 6 th Grade: In order to prepare for next year and to retain skills learned this year, we are utilizing the ALEKS program for summer math work. Ten assignments will be created, and they will be available to begin working on by June 26th. These assignments will count as a quiz grade in the first trimester of next school year. All assignments can be attempted multiple times and only the highest grade will count. In order to benefit from this review work, take your time, have pencil and paper next to you and take advantage of the tutorial ALEKS offers. This should be your work, and your work only!
