1 ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENGLISH: LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION REQUIRED SUMMER & FIRST SEMESTER WORK Note to students: When school begins in the fall, we will look closely at tragedy (Greek, Shakespearean, and modern tragedy). To prepare for this, you are to read three works during the summer (Two are plays; one is a novel) and two works during the semester (1 play and 1 novel). Then you are to do the work listed below. All work must be typed. Work associated with the first three works, must be completed and submitted to the teacher on the first day of class. Because students tablets will unavailable to them over the summer, all summer work will be submitted in-hand, not electronically. All work must be completed solely by the student. These are not shared work assignments. The only sources the students may consult for completion of the assignments are the required texts. Work completion is mandatory. Students who fail to follow this guideline must register for a course other than AP English IV. SUMMER WORK ASSIGNMENTS AND DUE DATES: A.) TESS OF THE D URBERVILLES by Thomas Hardy 1. ANNOTATION: Read and annotate the whole book. To annotate means to write comments about the material in the text while reading. Create a system for yourself and use it from start to finish. On the summer test, questions could include details about plot, character, setting, and point of view. The text will be surveyed. 2. GENERALIZATIONS ABOUT LITERATURE: Using the set of statements given to you, write 1-2 paragraphs on the statement you ve been assigned after you have read Tess. Your response should include comments on how these statements apply and you must provide textual support. (See attached handout.) B.) OEDIPUS REX by Sophocles 1. CHARACTERIZATION: List Oedipus, Tiresias, Creon, Jocasta, the Chorus, and one character of your choosing. Next to their names, put a quote from the play that you think accurately describes the most important character trait. Identify and name the trait. Include the page number of the quote. This will be collected. 2. PLOT: On the summer test, expect 1-3 short answer questions about the plot of the play. Know the plot well. C.) DEATH OF A SALESMAN by Arthur Miller 1. CHARACTERIZATION: List Biff, Willy, Happy, Linda, Charley, Bernard, the Woman, and Howard. Next to each name put a quote from the play that you think accurately describes the character s most important trait. Identify and name the trait. Include the page number of the quote. This will be collected.

2 2. PLOT ANALYSIS: Explain in paragraph form how the present action and past action are combined to create an unusual, non-chronological approach. (no more than one page, double-spaced, 12 pt font) D.) FINAL COPY ESSAY Due date for the essay is the first day of class. In addition to the work above, choose two of the literary works and write a comparison/contrast paper that compares and/or contrasts two main characters, one from each work. THIS MUST BE FINAL DRAFT QUALITY AND TYPED (double space, 12 pt font). Submission to turnitin.com is required. An about joining the turnitin.com class will be sent the first week of August. SUPPLEMENTAL READING AND HANDOUTS: In your summer reading work folder are several supplemental handouts that will both enhance our AP experience as well as add value to your understanding of the literature you read. Handouts included in the folder are of key importance and will provide you resources that will be useful to your success. Summer reading folders will be given out at a meeting scheduled the last week of school (May 25, 2018). WORK DUE LATER FIRST SEMESTER: E.) THE AWAKENING by Chopin Due date is October 8/9, 2018 (subject to change) The required work for this novel is book notes. See attached handout. F.) HAMLET by Shakespeare Due date is November 19/20, 2018 (subject to change) 1. List the most significant characters and next to their names, put a quote from the play that you think accurately describes their most important character trait. Include the act, scene, and line number. Name that trait. 2. Choose 3-4 significant consecutive lines from each scene that indicates the purpose of each scene. In a few explanatory sentences, state how these lines specifically relate to that purpose. Write out the quotations and cite the act, scene, and line numbers.

3 Tess of the D Urbervilles Generalizations About Literature Statements to consider. Complete only the one you are assigned. 1) Authors are not only social historians; they are also our cultural critics. 2) In much of literature, the family is the source for the most passionate kind of conflict. 3) A spiritual happening within a character often manifests itself through the experience of a journey. Every trip is a quest. 4) Weather is never just weather in a piece of literature. Using the statement given to you, write 1-2 paragraphs after you have read Tess that comments on how these statements apply. Please provide textual support. Allow yourself the opportunity to seek and find insight.

4 BOOK NOTES FOR AP ENGLISH IV TO BE DONE WITH THE AWAKENING (Due October 2018) The purpose of constructing book notes on the AP novels and plays is to give each student a complete record of the individual works that are covered. Through researching these works, the student has an intimate knowledge of the piece and its place in literature. An added advantage of the notes is that the student will have a comprehensive study guide at her disposal in preparation for the AP exam and for future college English courses. Please type. There are 11 sections to complete. Work must be completed solely by the student, except where noted. If an outside source is noted, the bibliographic information should appear in section XI. Work must be submitted to turnitin.com. I. AUTHORIAL BACKGROUND. The where, the when born, the what s going on in his country at the time. What happens to make the author want to write this work? Also include whatever else has been written by the author. May use outside source; provide bibliographic info in MLA form. II. LITERARY PERIOD/COUNTRY. Place the work in the right country and right literary period. What were the general literary movements of the time (ex. realism, naturalism, etc.)? Define and comment on them and how this work fits or doesn t. May use outside source; provide bib. info in MLA form. III. SETTING. Time, place significance to the work (or not). Milieu-customs of the area-culture. May use outside source; provide bib. info in MLA form. IV. CHARACTERS. List only the major characters along with details of each. Use quotes that describe them. Be sure to include traits (good and bad). V. THEMES of the book or play. In your research of the work, you should have discovered the major themes of the book. After identifying each theme, explain how it is developed. VI. PLOT SUMMARY. List major events only; be accurate (keep your list between items). Remember no SMOOPS or SPARKS (or other helpers); do your own work. VII. LITERARY DEVICES UNIQUE TO THE WORK. Any particular literary techniques used like symbolism, allusions, motifs, etcetera? You can get several clues as you do your reading of critical essays. Show how each is developed. VIII. CRITICAL ESSAYS ON THE WORK. A summary of 2 critical articles on the work; provide MLA citations for each. Each article should have its own summary, 1-2 paragraphs per article. DEEP info please. Especially good info would be themes and techniques. Critical essays must come from AHS databases like Bloom s Literary site. IX. SIGNIFICANT PASSAGE. Choose a passage from the book that STRUCK you as memorable or outstanding. Quote it. Explain why and relate its significance to the work. Provide the page number. X. SIGNIFICANCE OF TITLE. Make some enlightening statement about this in relation to the book or play. XI. BIBLIOGRAPHY. Provide a bibliography of sources used for this assignment. MLA format must be used.
