Its purpose was to carry out archaeological excavations in areas that were threatened with flooding by the construction of man made reservoirs following World War II. The University of Kansas was contracted to complete archaeological excavations at specific sites along the Missouri River basin in South Dakota. Under the directorship of Dr. Carlyle S. Smith investigations were carried out at Talking Crow site in , Spain site in 1953, Two Teeth site in 1955, and Stricker site in These materials reflect the accumulation of fieldwork and post-fieldwork analysis created and attained over the course of Carlyle S. Smith s and the University of Kansas collaboration with the River Basin Surveys Project. Access Restrictions: Prior notification to ARC staff is required. Use Restrictions: 1

Smith Correspondence, published manuscripts, unpublished manuscripts, abstracts, field notes, journals, inventories, drawings, maps, site descriptions, feature forms, analysis, financial information, artifact data, photographic images Biographical Note: Carlyle Smith was born in 1915 in Great Neck, New York. He received his PhD from Columbia University where he trained under William Duncan Strong and was initially exposed to Plains archaeology. He joined the University of Kansas faculty in 1947 as an assistant professor with the Department of Anthropology and Sociology and assistant curator with the Natural History Museum. His fieldwork spanned 1938 to 1975 and included investigations in New York, South Dakota and Kansas, Easter Island and the Marquesas. During excavations in South Dakota, he developed an expertise in the identification of gunflints and gun parts. Carlyle Smith s fieldwork and research significantly added to the collections at KU while his contribution to teaching prepared many students for a professional career in Anthropology. His leadership was a significant contribution to the development of a separate department of Anthropology in 1962 and the creation of the Museum of Anthropology in Scope and Contents: The Missouri River Basin Surveys collection is divided into five series based on unique differences between four separate expeditions at differing locations as well as one general project grouping. Series 1: Talking Crow site Investigations and Excavations This is the largest series in the collection. It incorporates three years (every summer) of excavations at the Talking Crow Site at Fort Randall Reservoir in South Dakota. The series consists of a large collection of correspondence files, arranged chronologically, chronicling the three individual extended investigations and excavations. Grant applications, agreements, and subsequent project reports are included as well. There is one linear foot of published and unpublished manuscripts written by Carlyle S. Smith, his students, and his colleagues in relation to work carried out at the Talking Crow site. There are large amounts of field data 2

3 and artifact analysis. Some of this is in the form of field journals while other information is found as artifact and feature forms. Series 2: Spain site Investigations and Excavations 1953 The Spain site in Fort Randall Reservoir, South Dakota, was excavated under a cooperative agreement between the University of Kansas and the United States National Park Service as a part of the Inter-Agency Archaeological Salvage Program in the Missouri Basin. From June 13 to August 6, 1953, excavations were carried on under the direction of Carlyle S. Smith at the Lyman site (39LM33), the Deerfly site (39LM39), the King site (39LM55), and the Spain site (39LM301). Surface collections were gathered from the Clarkstown site (39LM47) on several occasions (excerpted from final Spain site report). The materials in this series document the work carried out by Carlyle S. Smith in the development, organization, implementation, and explanation of the Spain site excavations and investigations. Included are correspondence (arranged chronologically), the field journal of Robert T. Grange, Jr. (field assistant on the project), artifact and site analysis, financial and funding documentation (including agreement with the National Park Service), one photography log, and manuscripts and reports summarizing the findings of the project. Series 3: Two Teeth site Investigations and Excavations 1955 In 1955 as part of the Inter-Agency Archaeological Salvage Program within the Missouri Basin, the Two Teeth (39BF204) and Skunk Island (39BF301, 39HE301, 39HE302, 39BF203, 39HE201, 39HE202) sites were excavated under the directorship of Dr. Carlyle S. Smith with the assistance of Alfred E. Johnson. Included in this series of documents is evidence of the preparation, execution, and summarization of these archaeological investigations. Correspondence, post-excavation publications, artifact analysis and tabulations, site feature forms and descriptions are contained here. There is also Robert T. Grange, Jr. s (field assistant) daily field log, along with weekly summaries of progress during the excavation. Photograph logs and maps of the locations are also included. Series 4: Stricker site Investigations and Excavations 1959 The Stricker site (39LM1) in Big Bend Reservoir, South Dakota, was excavated under a cooperative agreement between the University of Kansas and the United States National Park Service as a part of the Inter- 3

4 Agency Archaeological Salvage Program in the Missouri Basin. Excavations were carried out from June 6, 1959 to July 13, 1959 under the directorship of Dr. Carlyle S. Smith with the assistance of Bert Salwen, who served as field assistant during the excavations. Included in this series of documents is evidence of the preparation, execution, and summarization of the archaeological investigations. Correspondence, post-excavation publications, artifact analysis, site feature forms and descriptions are contained here. There is also a field journal written by Bert Salwen (field assistant) and Barbara Richards. Series 5: Missouri River Basin Surveys General Documentation, The River Basin Surveys Project (1946 to 1969) was a largely autonomous organization funded by the National Parks Service and the Smithsonian Institution. Carlyle S. Smith investigations were carried out at Talking Crow site in , Spain site in 1953, Two Teeth site in 1955, and Stricker site in This series contains general information about the Missouri River Basin Survey, including shared information between archaeologists working in the region. General correspondence, publications, reviews of articles, and sample collections information are all housed in this series. The general correspondence covers a date range from July 26, 1950 to January 28, There are numerous articles and reviews about overarching archaeological themes dealing with the Missouri River Basin. The sample collections documentation supports the artifactual collections for the Dodd site, Medicine Crow site, and Crow Creek site. Also included in this series are weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports about the numerous excavations occurring each year as well as maps and other ephemera.
