3 Welcome The Seoul Foreign British School library serves students from Reception to Year 6. In addition to providing quality reading materials, the library also serves to further complement what students are learning in the classroom. Please go over the library rules with your child carefully so that he/she clearly understands the responsibilities that come with the privileges of having access to library resources. We hope you will find this handbook resourceful and encourage you to approach the staff: Janet Hahm, Medial Specialist, or Mrs. Michelle Noh, Assistant Librarian with any questions you may have. 3

4 British School Library The British School Library is one of four libraries at SFS, and provides access to a broad range of information resources to ensure that students and staff are effective and responsible users of ideas and information. The love of children's literature is nurtured by regular author/illustrator visits from both Korea and abroad throughout the school year. Our facility houses a print and multi-media collection of approximately 15,000 items with interlibrary access to the Media Commons and the Secondary Media Centre as well as the Elementary School Library. GOALS To provide access to supporting materials and services to students, faculty and families of the SFS / SFBS community To provide resources as needed in the classroom to achieve the outcomes of the British National curriculum To promote literacy and the love of reading To instruct students in basic library skills and to assist them in making effective use of information in various formats 4

5 Library Rules Keep books in a library bag when transporting them to and from the library to protect books from getting damaged. Use a bookmark rather than bending the corner of a page or leaving the book open flat on its face. Keep books out of the reach of babies or very young children. Turn pages carefully so they won't tear or wrinkle. Return books on time so that other children can enjoy them. Do not re-shelve books unless shelf markers are placed properly. You must have a library pass to visit the library individually during school hours including break times. The Library is a QUIET place. Speak softly. No eating or drinking in the library at all times. Loan Policy Students have set borrowing limits to the number of books they may check out depending on their grade level, for up to two weeks. The number of books a student can have at a time corresponds to their Year. For example, Y3 students can borrow three books at a time. Reception and Y1 students can borrow one book at a time. Books may be renewed once for an additional two weeks. Parents may check out up to five books for two weeks with renewal privileges. Students with overdue items may not borrow additional items until the overdue items are returned. Overdue notices are sent out weekly through classroom teachers. Fines Students are allowed a grace period of three days for overdue items. Thereafter, each item is charged 500 won per day. 5

6 Parents are not given a grace period and will be fined 500 won per item, per day. DVD Loans DVDs can be borrowed with signed permission from parents. If you would like your child to be able to borrow DVDs and videos, you must sign the BS Library Check-out Permission Form for DVDs at the beginning of the school year. Please note that the loan period is THREE days only. Loan Policy for ebooks ebooks can be checked out online for 7 days. The borrower has use of the ebook for the duration of the loan period or until the ebook is returned. Students can access ebooks online from anywhere or they can download and view ebooks offline. You can also access the ebook on an ipad(version 3.0 and above). Follett Digital Reader free App must be downloaded on the device from the App store. The login account information is The students must also enter the same username and password that they use to access Destiny Quest at school. Please contact Janet Hahm, Librarian, jhahm@seoulforeign.org regarding any questions about ebook access. Class Visits Every class is scheduled for two library visits during a 6-day cycle. Depending on the grade level, students learn to navigate library resources to varying degrees and are given time for book exchanges. Individual students may come during the day with teacher permission. A maximum of four students are allowed to visit the library for research purposes anytime during the school day with a library pass. 6

7 Damaged and Lost Book Policy Students are responsible for paying for lost or damaged items. A bill for the replacement cost is issued after three notices have been sent home. The replacement charge is calculated at the cost of the item plus 3,000 won processing fee. If the book is found at home at a later time, a refund is given regardless of the elapsed time. For minor tears in books, please do not attempt to repair the book at home. Rather, return the book with a note to the library. We use special glue and book tape for repairing books. Students (Reception through Year 5) are required to use a book bag to protect books from getting damaged. A book bag can be purchased from the SFS Spirit Shop. Please make sure your child's name is clearly marked on the bag. Each child is responsible for books that he/she checks out from the library until they are returned. Library Hours The library is open from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students may visit the library during regular school hours including recesses provided they have a pass from their teacher. 7

8 How to Find Materials In the Library Most of the materials are arranged in numerical order according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system, which divides the subjects into 10 main classes. Each book/material is assigned a call number. A call number is like an address: it tells us where the book is located in the library. Because books are classified by subject, you can often find several helpful books on the same shelf, or nearby. A prefix is sometimes used with the call number. Prefix is used with the call number to help identify the format of the material and the holding location in the library. 9 Destiny Online Library Catalogue Destiny Library Manager, a well-respected name in school libraries, is a userfriendly, web-based, division-wide library browser which can be accessed through any workstation with a supported web browser through the Internet. Students in the upper grades who complete a short orientation activity are given their own user name and password. This allows them to check their circulation status, renew materials, and create personalized book lists. How will Destiny help my child with research? Destiny is web-based so it can be accessed from any Internet connected computer. Destiny shows books available at the British School Library, as well as the other division libraries at Seoul Foreign School. Destiny is image-rich. The book cover is pictured in the search list. Selecting the book displays will lead to valuable information such as the number of copies available, a book summary and suggested level, etc. Clicking on the book cover (Title Peek) allows the reader to explore book pages and read reviews. Look for "Web Express" once you select a book. There is a link that connects the reader to pre-selected, teacher approved, grade- leveled web pages that correspond to the subject of the book that has been selected. Destiny makes suggestions for other subjects and books that are related to the book selected. A direct link takes the reader to a new list of options. Destiny allows the user to make a personalized book-list. Destiny creates a bibliography from a booklist Will Destiny let me see my child's library account? Yes. Students will learn how to log onto Destiny using their student number. They will be able to check their account, make book selections and save their personal book-lists. 9

You can take advantage of personal features like checkouts, highlighting, read aloud, and note-taking. You may sign in with a generic user name to read an ebook online. 10

14 Visiting Authors The British School Library Visiting Author Programme continues to sponsor exciting and dynamic authors and illustrators to bring the very best literature to our students. In the past, we have had award winning authors such as Linda Sue Park, Korky Paul, Sandra Horn, Diane Stanley, Benjamin Zephaniah and Anne Sibley. This year we had an international author/photographer, Nic Bishop, visited our school in March. We learned about his photography art and research process. Last year, we were honored to host Linda Sue Park, an accomplished American author of children s fiction and laureate of the esteemed 2002 Newbery Medal for her novel A Single Shard. The John Newbery Medal is the most prestigious award in children's literature given by the Association for Library Service to Children and is given annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Ms. Park has written numerous historical fiction novels centering on Korean history and culture. Students were thrilled to see Linda Sue Park! She encouraged students of all ages to become writers or her preferred word a rewriter. She asked students to become avid readers in order to gain greater knowledge, emphasizing that something they learn today could very well solve a problem they have in the future. Earlier this year, visiting storyteller/author, Tanya Batt, entranced students in the Elementary and British Schools with her lively performance of folktales and fairytales. Based in New Zealand, she has traveled to many schools around the world with this being her first visit to Korea. Using only her voice, Tanya Batt created a variety of sounds and songs to tell her stories. They all began with her story sack, a concept originating in Korea. Younger students heard an exciting Mongolian tale called Puchika Churita, middle grades enjoyed Why Mosquitos Buzz, an African tale, while the older students were treated to The 14

15 King s Seed, a Scottish version of a Chinese tale, The Empty Pot. Teachers and students alike would be eager to have her back someday. Linda Sue Park Korky Paul 15
