2 1. Where do you publish? What do you publish? Diane Blakemore How high do you aim? Peer reviewed articles important for cvs But you can start with working papers, conference papers Not all peer reviewed journals are the same Thomson Scientific, Web of Science, impact factor (on-line, interactive) Be realistic high prestige goes with low acceptance rate

Look at previous and current issues Read the mission statement (in journal and on website for journal) Talk to your supervisor

4 What kind of paper can I submit? Aim to send every quality paper to a working papers, conference proceedings or journal BUT DON T FORGET YOUR THESIS! Short papers may be appropriate for a squib or notes section of a journal While some topics need lengthy discussion, don t try to cram too much into one paper you might need to split your paper into two 2. 9 Before you write Why is your material interesting? Who will it be interesting to? Think about its obvious, primary audience making it interesting/comprehensible to linguists outside the special interest group What is original in your data or analysis? Is the topic reasonably well delimited? not too baggy and diffuse, not too narrow Writing your paper How are papers normally presented in the journal (or whatever) that you re submitting to? official style sheet general technical level assumed: look at other papers What are your assumptions? Conclusions? Route from assumptions to conclusions? Methodology and theoretical approach(es)? Previous work: just enough to situate yours

10 Mechanics Referencing. Check style sheet of journal. If in doubt, use Unified style sheet (see under Word processing and Useful links in Computer resources for linguists Example numbering? Check style sheet. Footnotes or endnotes? MS Word, PDF, LaTeX, hardcopy!? Write it!

11 Revising your paper (Ideally) put it aside for a week+, then look at it again dispassionately and rewrite it. If a non-native speaker, have it read by a native speaker. Show it to useful readers (supervisors, friends) for their advice. Decide how much of their advice to take! Try to remove obvious typos, writing errors. Submit it Good luck!

12 4. Dealing with reviews Nigel Vincent Possible responses Outright acceptance pretty rare unless you re called Noam Chomsky! Accept but some changes required Revise and resubmit Outright rejection nasty but it happens to all of us (unless you re NC!)

13 Resubmit to same journal or try elsewhere? Depends on the reports they may give you no choice! Otherwise best to resubmit to the original journal Never submit to two journals at the same time How to revise go carefully through the referees comments follow the advice in the editor s letter if there are incompatibilities between the reports, think how they can be reconciled discuss revisions with a colleague or supervisor get the revised version read by someone independent
