SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH This September marks the 30th anniversary of Library Card Sign-Up Month a time when the American Library Association (ALA) joins public libraries nationwide to highlight the value of a library card. Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. Libraries work to remind parents and youth that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning. CODE CLUB Our first Code Club was so much fun! Using as well as interactive activities, 15 kids participated in this 6 week club led by staff member Kelsey (with Tiffany assisting). At the second to last gathering, we went on a field trip to Pixel Grafix to see code in action. A huge thank you to Mary Lulich and staff! STORYTIME WITH MRS. SLOAN NEW DAY AND TIME! Storytime with Mrs. Sloan will be on Wednesdays at 10:15am beginning September 13. Join us for stories, songs, and fingerplays. Designed for toddlers and preschoolers. New this year: children will receive a free board book each month thanks to a grant from the People s Fund at Great Lakes Energy Cooperative. If you are a Great Lakes customer, we encourage you to sign up for the round-up program. Thank you! The Library will be closed on Monday September 4.

2 SAVE THE DATE In honor of National Friends of Libraries Week, refreshments will be served at the October Friends of the Library meeting. National Friends of Libraries Week is October 15-21, 2017 Paul and Kate (Anna Katherine) Lound Library Endowment Fund Challenge Thank you to all who have donated to the library s fund in the Community Foundation for Oceana! $1,605 has been raised as of August 18. Thank you to the Lound family for this match opportunity. Please stop by to view the plaque commissioned in honor of the challenge in the library s reading room. Thanks to a generous donation from the Friends, a writing workshop was held at the library on August 15. Ten kids ages 7-17 listened to local authors Abigail Pollack and Kelsey Mecher and editor Tiffany Haight speak about the writing, editing, and publishing process. Participants then had a chance to create their own story and illustrations in a bound hardcover book with blank pages. THANK YOU FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY!!! WHAT ARE WE READING? A new feature to our newsletter: guess what Shelby librarians are reading! Have fun maybe you ll find something new to read! The Book Tasting Book Club will meet on September 30 at 10:15am. Theme for the month will be Banned Books. 2 Copies of the book discussed will be available at the circulation desk. This is Tiffany Haight, Shelby Area District Library Director. A few of her hobbies include reading, baking, and gardening. She loves Halloween and pumpkin spice everything! Which book do you think Tiffany is currently reading? A.) 3 NOTES FROM FRIENDS The Good Buy Book Sale this August was well attended and brought in over $ Thank you to all of our Friends who donated and purchased books. A big thank you also goes out to Mary Ann Carey for the four beautiful book baskets she created for auction at the sale. Our co-chairs of the Book Sale, Val Lau and Mary Ellen Heyde, did a fantastic job with lots of help from many volunteers who posted and collected signs, helped with the tent and book display, sorted books, assisted with sales, cleaned up and donated leftover books to assist another charity: Eileen Lischer, Faye Nussdorfer, Janet Schultz, Diane Clark, Paula Inglis, Barb Hopper, Martha Bartlett, Ruth Tobin, Sharon Zoller, Cathy Fox, Mary Ann Carey, Connie Near, Lydia Fessenden, Gordie Parrington, Tom Best, Emilee Best, John McKinnon, Cindy McKinnon. Mark your calendar today to attend our next meeting, Thursday, October 12 at 5:00 at the Library. What's the next big fundraiser activity for Friends? Celebration of the Trees and Christmas Bazaar Nov Dec. 3. This event is HUGE and lots of helpers are needed. Learn how you can get involved by attending the October 12 Friends meeting. Meanwhile, if you are doing any summer cleaning and decide you no longer want to store all those Christmas decorations, we can use them. Drop off at the Library any time during regular hours. September Pinterest Club will meet on Thursday September 7 at 5:30pm to make a terra cotta apple. $5 supply fee. Registration required. This event is for teens and adults. Read any good books this summer? I love discovering a "new" author at our Shelby Area District Library. Lately it's anything by Lisa Unger and our library has several of her books. 4 ABCmouse.com The Shelby Area District Library offers ABCmouse.com Early Learning Academy-- a high-quality online educational resource for young children, which is available free to patrons when they visit the library. ABCmouse.com is a comprehensive early learning site for children ages 2-7+, covering reading and language arts, math, science, social studies, art, and music. It is completely child-safe, with no advertising or links to other websites. ABCmouse.com has won numerous awards and features more than 5,000 online learning activities, including books, interactive learning activities, games, puzzles, songs, art activities, and more. Best of all, children love it and have fun while learning. Children will need to be accompanied by an adult when using Shelby Area District Library computers to access ABCmouse.com. 5 Ancestry Databases The Shelby Area District Library offers two ancestry databases to library patrons--heritagequest Online and Ancestry Library Edition. HeritageQuest Online can be accessed at home with your library card and Ancestry Library Edition is accessed at the library. HeritageQuest Online offers immigration records, city directories, public records, maps, photos and more. Ancestry Library Edition is a joint effort between ProQuest and Ancestry.com and provides unprecedented access to family history via documents that record the lineage of more than five billion individuals. Census, immigration, court, military, birth and death records for the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Europe, and Australia can all be found inside this one powerful resource. You can access HeritageQuest Online from home by visiting The link is located on the Local History page. Ancestry Library Edition s icon is on all public computers at the library.
