2007 National Library Week Celebration Come your library! Libraries of the World Showcase Co-sponsored by the Training and Learning Advisory Committee and the Libraries Advisory Committee on Diversity New Brunswick: Tuesday, April 17, 2007, 1:30 4:30 pm, Pane Room, Alexander Library World Digital Library Project Melanie Miller, presenter The objectives of the World Digital Library are to promote international and inter-cultural understanding and awareness, provide resources to educators, expand non-english and non-western content on the Internet, and to contribute to scholarly research. The Library of Congress is partnering with UNESCO, IFLA, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, National Library of Brazil, National Library and Archives of Egypt, National Library of Russia, and Russian State Library to make the World Digital Library a reality. The library will make available on the Internet, free of charge and in multilingual format, significant primary materials from cultures around the world, including manuscripts, maps, rare books, musical scores, recordings, films, prints, photographs, architectural drawings, and other significant cultural materials.
Bringing Books and People Together: Mobile Libraries across the Globe Tom Glynn and Nicole Warren, presenters Libraries across the globe often face enormous challenges in bringing library resources to users in remote regions. Librarians in various countries have developed means of reaching out to these underserved populations in ways that are uniquely adapted to local environments. This display, inspired by our colleague Thelma Tate s work with mobile libraries in the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), examines a few of the more intriguing modes, including by donkey, camel and elephant.
Libraries in China: Then and Now Li Sun, Jingfeng Xia, Connie Wu, presenters The presentation will include discussion of the Chinese Library Classification and Chinese CN Marc, The Four Treasures of the Study, and the model Chinese library photo show. As a special souvenir for attendees, the presenters will write the attendees names in Chinese on a bookmark using Chinese Brush Pen as a gift for stopping by.
The Memory of a Nation: The National Széchényi Library, Budapest, Hungary Judit Hajnal Ward, presenter The National Széchényi Library of Hungary collects, processes and preserves the heritage of Hungary and all documents pertaining to it. The Hungarica Collection provides scholars with the most important collections of books and other documents published in Hungary, and publications related to Hungary or to Hungarians published abroad. As the memory of the nation, the National Széchényi Library is the common heritage of all Hungarians and an integral part of European and universal culture. Some international collections for Spanish and Portuguese Lourdes Vasquez, presenter Lourdes will be presenting from the Libraries print collections: books and CD-ROMs related to libraries and collections in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. She will also provide a selected list of Internet resources from all regions including Africa. The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Marilyn Wilt, presenter IFLA is the leading international body representing the interests of library and information services and their users. It is the global voice of the library and information profession. Founded in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1927, IFLA currently has 1700 Members from 150 countries around the world. Marilyn will share information on IFLA s mission, core values, and goals, its organization, core activities, publications, and resources.
Room to Read Holly Muller, presenter Room to Read has established over 3,609 bilingual libraries in Nepal, Cambodia, India, Laos, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and South Africa since 2000, and publishes local language children s books.
