(Wear mittens as we read) Winter character dress up Brentwood Elementary Most AR Points in a Week, competition between classes in each grade level (Accelerated Reader reports will be pulled for each class on Monday morning, and then again on Friday at noon. The class that earned the most points in a week, from each grade level will get a treat!)

6 Shelfies Students/teachers take pics of themselves reading any book near the stacks/shelves of libraries. Pics are displayed on bulletin board. Door Poster Contest: K-1 1. Teacher and students will choose one book to be depicted outside classroom door. 2. Student contribution must be evident. 3. Door poster will be judged by a rubric. 4. Creativity, neatness, and all the other elements that go into a finished product will be considered. 5. All decorations must be in place by 12:00 pm on Friday. Three judges will choose their three favorite posters. 6. 1st place, 2nd place, & 3rd place will be awarded. Book Display Board: Each class will develop a book board depicting a favorite book. 2. Student contribution must be evident. 3. Board must be a trifold science board. 4. Creativity, neatness, and all the other elements that go into a finished product will be considered. 5. Boards should be completed and brought to the Media Center hallway by 12 p.m. Friday. 6. 1st place, 2nd place, & 3rd place will be awarded. Book Character Collage: Students create a digital book collage and hide 3-6 famous book characters in the collage. 2. Students may provide hints if they choose. 3. Teachers will submit collages to a Google Drive so teachers can display/project the image for other students. May be displayed on WCUB the following week as well. 4. Students try to find/guess the hidden characters in each collage. 5. Fun activity no prizes for finding characters. However, prizes will be awarded for 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd place for the best submitted collage based on detail in the collage and difficulty finding characters. K-1 Door Decorating Contest--ongoing all week to be judged on Friday. 2-3 Book Display Board each class develops a trifold display board judged Friday. 4-5 Book Character Collage created towards a find the characters contest Friday. 7 WCUB Guest Reader: Book Talk Kids Choice contest - students submit name of their favorite book in box to be tabulated and displayed on a hallway poster designating the winning book titles per grade level. Poster displayed on Tuesday. HAT / BLACKOUT DAY Wear either all white or all black and your favorite hat! All Grades: Drop Everything And Read for 20 minutes WCUB Guest Reader: Book Talk Buddy Read: upper grade classes pair up with lower grade classes to read together Book Swap: Students are encouraged to bring in books from home that they wouldn t mind swapping out with one brought by another student. Tables of contributed books will be set up per grade level. STUFFED ANIMAL DAY Students may bring in their favorite stuffed animal to read to! All Grades: Drop Everything And Read for 20 minutes WCUB Guest Reader: Book Talk Reader s Theater in classrooms; grouped, pairs or whole group Guest Readers 7:30-8:30; teachers can invite parents or other guests to come read to class; community partners may be invited WACKY WEDNESDAY Crazy hair day; students wear their hair all kinds of crazy! Flashlight Reading students can bring a flashlight and a stuffed animal to read a book with at school. Reading Builds Character Dress up as your favorite book character. Reading Fair Grades 3 5 ONLY. Students will display a reading board for others to observe and vote on. Vocabulary Parade, Grades K-2 Students will select a vocabulary word and create a costume to illustrate the meaning of the word. All students will vote on their favorite class door. (Kindergarten and 1 st vote for each other, 2 nd and 3 rd vote for each other, 4 th and 5 th vote for each other) DEAR minutes of DROP EVERYTHING AND READ! Pie a Teacher The class on each grade level with the most AR points will be able to pie their teacher in the face!

10 Lincoln Park Elementary Bookmark Contest - Students will create a bookmark focusing on this year's Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! theme "Find Yourself in a Book!" I am an AR Star! - Students will receive an AR punch card. They will punch out a star for every book read with a passing score of 70% or greater. (This activity may be extended for the rest of the school year.) Book review by student on the Leopard News Show followed by an invitation to students to write their own Reading Rainbow review (this will be ongoing; a student will be invited to review a book of their choice on the Morning Show by the Media Specialist each week for the remainder of the year). Students will choose a character and write a poem or diary entry from the character's point of view. The poem or diary entry will recount or react to the events in the story that have the most impact on the character. Wild About Reading Wednesday- Students will wear wild and crazy mismatched clothes to show just how "Crazy" they are about reading. Caught You Reading Tickets-students that are caught reading throughout the week by faculty staff or admin. Will receive a ticket for one of 5 drawings for a free book or other prizes. Buddy reading - Classes are paired up to engage in buddy reading. PK & 2 nd, K & 3 rd, 1 st & 4th. Each student will be paired with someone during a common school-wide time to DROP EVERYTHING AND READ. Story Book Character Day Parade - Students and staff will dress up as their favorite story book character. Teachers may extend this to Oral Book Report/Living Library Presentations.

11 Lipscomb Elementary Show a video of Mrs. Sanders and Dr. Quarells reading a short book to kickoff literacy week, then drop everything and read. Writing Project: The best book I've read this year is. Pair Up Day: Students in upper grade classes will pair up to read with students in lower grade classes. Invite a special guest to read to your class. Door decorating contest: Students will vote for their favorite Classroom door that has been decorated as a book cover. Longleaf Elementary Make your Mark: Students will make their very own bookmark to use throughout this week of reading fun. Reading Rocks Wear Silly Socks: Students can wear their favorite pair of silly socks.

12 Quilts of Many Titles Students illustrate their favorite book and the teacher will put the sheets into a quilt-like format to display outside their classrooms/or around the school. Reading Makes You Bright: Students can wear shades. Buddy Up and Read Upper grade classrooms pair will with lower grade classroom to buddy up and read! Please sign up for a class in the teacher workroom and set a plan with your partner. Plan for a short period of about 20 minutes. Read My Shirt: Students can wear shirts with school appropriate print. Vocabulary Hat Day for K-2 (students choose a word from the assigned category to display on a sentence strip hat.) The hat should include the word and a representation of the word with illustrations or real objects. Vocabulary Badge Day for 3-5- Using a precut badge, the students will display their word, the meaning, and illustrations or real objects. K- Verbs 1 st - Antonyms 2 nd - Synonyms 3 rd - Adjectives 4 th - Nouns 5 th - Homophones Cuddle Up and Read Students and teachers are invited to wear their pj s to school. Teachers should plan to facilitate a 20 minutes session of D.E.A.R. McArthur Elementary School Read-a-thon read a fun book with each subject area. Utilize guest authors if possible.

13 Awesome Authors Day Each teacher chooses one author to highlight and share their stories. Scholastic and Teaching Books are sites that have author interviews. Cold Hard Facts Informational Text Day Help students identify main idea and details, fact and opinion, text features and how to summarize a text. McArthurCON to include graphic novels/comic books/fiction/ superheroes focus is on story elements of plot, setting, and character development. Poetry Palooza Poetry day. Poetry slam (kids act out poems), share poetry, orally read poetry, write poetry. The site has several student interactives that allow students to easily create poems. Molino Park Elementary Used Book Sale Reading Makes You Brighter DEAR with flashlights from home; wear bright/neon colors. Using Maps to Find an Author s Treasure Choose one class book and make Thinking Maps to go along with the book. (Thinking Maps will be teacher choicecan be whole class maps, group maps, individual maps). Tell Mr. Brabham your class book the week prior to Literacy Week. It can be a book you ve already read in class. In Art, he will have the students make a cover for your class bulletin board. He will pick a winner. Your class can display the winning cover and Thinking Maps on an assigned bulletin board. Dress as a pirate. Books are our treasure! *Sam will tell staff in staff meeting and explain to Matt Pre-K- 1 map K-1-2 different maps (per class) 2 nd -5 th - 4 different maps (per class) Wacky Socks

14 Find a Book Buddy Partner Reading/Big Buddy, Little Buddy for 30 minutes. Get Tied Up in a Book Parade Add yourself to a scene of your favorite book. We will send the cardstock tie home the Friday prior with a letter explaining the directions. The parade on Friday Myrtle Grove Elementary Literacy/STEM Make a connection between literacy and STEM Classroom Door Decorating : 1. Transform your door into the cover of a favorite book OR 2. Represent the theme Find Yourself in a Book Teacher Swap! Choose a favorite book to read to another class and swap teachers for a readaloud. Mystery Reader Day - Mystery Reader will read aloud a short passage during the morning show (off stage). Throughout the day students can submit their guess through Google Forms. Find Yourself in a Faraway Place Wear a tshirt from a place you ve visited, or wear something to represent a faraway place. Find Yourself in a Fable/Folktale/Fairytale Rewrite a story with yourself as the main character. Create and wear a hat to represent your story. Find the Words on My Shirt Day : Students should wear something with words (for example, a Tshirt) Find Yourself in the Future dress as something you want to be when you grow up. Read a book with information about your career choice. Find Yourself in Flannel Wear a cozy flannel shirt (or PJs, teacher discretion) to snuggle up and read. Oakcrest Elementary "Guess the reader wall"- Teachers are photographed holding their favorite book hiding their face. Students guess the reader hidden behind the book. Students in 1st -2nd grade share book recommendations during WOAK news.

The stories are broadcasted into lunchroom using the casting system. 5th grade students share book recommendations during WOAK news. Students create a book mark about their favorite character. Teacher Exchange! Teachers read stories to a different grade level. For instance 1st grade teacher would read to a 5th grade class. Pine Meadow All classes will Drop Everything and Read for 20 minutes each day. Baby pictures of teachers will be posted for students to guess. Daily read-aloud for students to guess who the reader is. Silent Reading: Students will silent read during library time this week! Book Hooks: Select students will share their favorite books on the morning news. Read and Join the Winning Team! Students will kick off the week by wearing clothing with their favorite team or school shirt! Students will bring in books for the Book Swap. They can bring up to five books they want to swap for new ones! Turn it off Tuesday! Students will be encouraged to turn off electronics and read! Students will bring in books for the Book Swap. Be a Wonder and Choose Kindness! Read a book with a new friend. Classes will buddy read with other classes. Last day students will bring in books for the Book Swap.

West Pensacola Elementary The Giving Tree Pass 5 AR Tests during the week, with an 80% or higher, and receive a free book! Million Minute Read-a-Thon Work on getting your students on AR for the grade level competition! Start your door decorating! Hats Off to Books Students wear hats in celebration of Literacy Week. Character Craze! Create a video from the point of view of your favorite character in a book OR tell readers why a certain character is your favorite and how they contribute to the the storyline and plot. You may even create a double bubble map to compare a character to yourself! Be a CRAZY Reader Crazy hair day to celebrate Literacy Week. Movie Time! Create a movie trailer for a favorite book. Have students work in collaborative pairs to write, direct, and star in their own movie trailer to promote a book of their choice!

19 Score with Books Students wear their favorite team gear to show support for Literacy Week. Famous Authors! Read two or three nonfictional texts about an author and make a class poster detailing the most important facts from their life. Read and compare two or more texts by the same author Perhaps, even create a Flow Map of their life and works! "Making a Mark" Create a bookmark that describes key ideas and details of your favorite book. The winning bookmark will be passed out in the Innovation Center and the student will win 2 No Homework passes!
