5 Why should kids have all the fun? Adult readers, there s good news: This summer, it s all about you! Picking up a book and getting lost in its pages is the perfect way to enjoy the sunny days and endless nights that are coming our way. Even better, studies find that reading can decrease blood pressure, sharpen memory recall as we age and may even make us more empathetic. And health benefits aren t the only perks enjoyed by adult readers! Books open doors to new solutions that help us deal with life s everyday problems. There is great value in seeing life from a different perspective. So whether you re soaking up the sun on the beach, planning for a family vacation, or just looking for an escape that no travel agent can provide, get lost in a good book this summer. There s no telling where those wondrous words will take you! Super Seniors Summer Book Club Rawlins Library is hosting a Janette Oke Book Club exclusively for our Super Seniors every month through September. Registration is requested in advance to attend these monthly programs. Every registrant will receive a free copy of the book to keep and read before the program. Programs will consist of a book discussion followed by the showing of the movie by the same title. Join us for a fun summer with Janette Oke! July 10 1:00 p.m. 5 5

7 2017 One Book South Dakota If everyone in a community read and discussed the same book, the result would be an exchange of ideas. That is the premise of the South Dakota Humanities Council s One Book South Dakota program. The 2017 One Book South Dakota selection is Kitchens of the Great Midwest. It s a novel by J. Ryan Stradal about a young woman with a once-in-a-generation palate who becomes the iconic chef behind the country s most coveted dinner reservation. The book was named the fiction book of the year by the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association and was selected as a best book of the year by Amazon, BookPage, LibraryReads and NPR. People in the Pierre/Fort Pierre area will be fortunate to be able to discuss the book with the author and have him sign copies of it. Stradal will be at the Ramkota RiverCentre in Pierre on Thursday, July 20. Events at the Ramkota RiverCentre will begin with an author reception at 6:00 p.m. in which people can sample food featured in Kitchens of the Great Midwest. At 7:00 p.m., Lindy and Matt Geraets of B&G Produce will tell about what is involved in producing locally grown vegetables and fruit. Stradal s program will begin at 7:30 p.m. We love our volunteers!! Nephi & Deon Johanson have been sprucing up the library with flowers, washing signs so we can read them again, cleaning dvd cases and shifting books on the shelves. We appreciate and thank you for your time & awesome results of your work. Please join us for another session of the Rawlins Library Adult Coloring Club WHEN: July 8 (Saturday) 10:30 a.m. WHERE: Rawlins Library Dakota Room WHO: Adults ages 18 and up Adult Coloring Club Coloring sheets, markers & colored pencils will be provided, or bring your own if a different medium is preferred. 7

11 MEET YOUR LIBRARIANS A brief biography of a Rawlins Library staff member Library Assistant My exposure to literary classics began at an early age. Birthday and Christmas gifts from my Grandma Daniel always included a book. My favorites as a youngster were Go, Dog. Go! and Dr. Seuss McElligot s Pool. As I became older, my sisters and I received The Happy Hollisters, The Bobbsey Twins, and the Best in Children s Books series. My father taught English and was a high school guidance counselor. After playing a game of Yahtzee together when I was in high school, he could clearly see that I was headed for any career that did not involve math. I was a reporter for many years. When I was looking for a second job, Rawlins Library had a job opening for a library assistant. I was fortunate to have former director Beverly Lewis hire me. There have been some changes in Rawlins during the years I ve worked here. Some of the patrons who used to come in on a regular basis do not come in as often because they are checking out E-books. The collection of audio books has grown. Many of the encyclopedias and reference books have disappeared as people can look up information on computers. But what hasn t changed is the commitment of those of us at Rawlins to provide the latest technology and a wide variety of materials, and to make Rawlins a welcoming place where we try to assist patrons as best we can. I m happy to be part of it. Dorinda 11
