Specially signed by the poet with eight revisions in ink as well as three given dates for the revisions through Revisions include %ve words crossed out, several words added or changed and the last line underlined and noted to be italicized. The subject of the poem is the Attica riots of Sept. 1971, the great black mark on Gov. Rockefeller's record when he called in the National Guard instead of negotiating. The leaf has been rolled and subsequently heavily creased, two corners turned, some toning mostly verso, and though no real wear; still only good.the bibliography lists this as a %rst appearance of the poem, and does not give an edition size, but scarce signed.. Inscribed by the poet in May 1970, in San Francisco, with corrections on pages 13 and 60, likely in the poet's hand (the same ink is used). A newspaper article by Boyle from 1970, is taped (four pieces) to the rear endpapers. The article is mostly about her writing in particular her radicalism, although it does not mention the 1968 student rally in which she and a number of other professors came to the support of their students at SF State as the rally was being broken up (a photo of that event is reproduced on the back cover of the book). This copy inscribed by Duncan to Bertholf's wife Ann[e] "chez Bertholf" with a picture of the author with the Bertholfs at a dinner table. One of three such copies according to notes on an envelope by Robert Bertholf, then curator at Kent State Library and Duncan's bibliographer and literary executor. An about %ne copy.
