1 Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! January 25-29, 2016 St. Johns County District and school weeklong events Each class will make a large pages with an original story, comic strip, or words and pictures that promote reading. The pages will be mounted on foam core to create a big book that will be displayed in the Media Center throughout Celebrate Literacy Week. MAD HATTER MONDAY - Hats off to reading! Wear a hat! High School students from reading classes will visit K-8 classes and read aloud. Middle School students will visit K and 1 classrooms and share their favorite childhood books. Bulletin board Look who was Caught Reading will be created in hallway. Local storyteller will visit. Students will create book talks advertising some of their favorite books. Students will hear from other students about some really great books they may want to check out and read on the morning news. Each class will have a Mystery Reader visit and read to them during their media time. Teachers will participate in mini book talks and book recommendations, which will be aired on morning news shows. The books will be displayed in the Media Center for students to check out. In response to lessons that are being taught, each class will complete I love

2 reading because, during their media rotation. All responses will be posted throughout the hallways. DEAR time- can be independent or teacher read-aloud Teacher Feature: Special Edition on the morning news. Teachers will share their best tips and strategies for reading. The news crew may be coming to see you (between 7:50-8:10 AM), so have a tip or strategy ready to share! Each day during the week, students will review books on the morning news. Guess Who Gallery Walk: ten staff members will be photographed reading their favorite book (faces will be hidden). Teachers will allow small groups of students to view the gallery or take their students by the Guess Who gallery (located on the Media Center doors) and give students five-ten minutes to make their guesses. Teachers will check the answers and provide $1 in school cash for students who get 8 or more correct. Literacy BINGO: Each student will get a BINGO card on Monday morning, and teachers will allow students to work on Literacy BINGO during the week. If a student makes a BINGO, he/she may turn his/her card into the Literacy BINGO box in the Media Center. Drawings for free books will be done daily from the completed BINGO sheets. Daily literacy announcements on morning news throughout the week will include presentations about Celebrate Literacy Week, and Florida and school literacy events. Guest Readers will include faculty, parents, grandparents, and peer readers. Reading Slide Show- this will show faculty & staff reading at school and home, and may include family members/animals and silly poems. Literacy Commercials students will create commercials to advertise SSYRA and FRA books. Ongoing through the week: Guess the Teacher Photo Contest: Photos of teachers reading a book with only eyes showing-students guess who is reading. Selfie Shelfie: teachers take a selfie and students have to match them to the book they are reading. Blind Date w/ a Book Book Character Parade Drop Everything & Read! After-school Reading and Science Clubs-with Principal and ILC Monthly School-wide Book of the Month and Vocabulary Parade Kick-Off Book Buddies-intermediate students pair up with primary students to read together. The Sunshine State Reader Program Mystery Reader Volunteer Program-parents and grandparents surprise students by being a guest reader. Reading BINGO Cards-students read 25 books across genres and earn stickers and end-of-year prize. Mystery Reader on morning news- students are able to guess each day who the next guest reader will be.

3 Guess the number of books in the library. Each class will guess the number of books in the library. The class that guesses correctly will get a class treat. Million Minute Marathon school-wide Guest readers reading international fairy tales and myths to IR classes Caught Ya Reading students who are caught reading during lunch or free time will be rewarded with a sweet treat! Showcase international authors, books, settings in the media center Fifth Wave book party afterschool on January 28 th Book club meeting afterschool on January 27 th T-shirt read faculty and students will wear shirts with a school appropriate message on it to be read by others in the building. This should stem conversation as well! IR lesson follow-up we will follow up with IR classes to extend the lesson on international fairy tales that will have them reading and analyzing multiple stories. The theme will be Cinderella! We will create a Reading Galaxy, where a star is added to the galaxy to represent each book read by the students during this week. Throughout the week, students writing will be highlighted in their class Author s Chair. READING CHANGES OUR WORLD: Class Reading Adventure Log. Classes count number of books/pages read. Every 10 books or 20 pages earns movement across a large world map. Classes that travel across all seven continents will earn books. We will assign each grade level a continent and they will read about that continent, discover authors from that continent, and facts to add to a school world map. We will be doing extended read-alouds this week as well as creating book posters of favorite books to be displayed throughout the school. Guest readers Book displays of students favorite books End-of-week dance if reading goal is met. Daily book quiz on morning announcements Door Decorating about books or literacy Character Day: Students will have the option to dress as a character for the day. They will wear a sticker saying Who am I? and have their photo taken. The photos will be on display in the media center following the event, and a team will vote on the winner. Hats on for Reading: To raise money for a local literacy charity, students can pay $1to wear a hat during Literacy Week. The students in hats will help serve as symbols to spread the word of literacy in our school. Open Mike Reading: Students will be able to showcase their writing talents by submitting a piece to be read during an open mike session in the auditorium. Read-A-Thon: Prominent members of the community will be invited to come and read a piece of literature that has changed their world. Speed Book Talk: Much like speed dating, this structure will involve centers in

4 Monday, January 25 th the media center where students will do a book talk on a novel they ve read in 60 seconds or less. In response to lessons that are being taught, each class will complete I Love Reading because, during their media rotation. All responses will be posted throughout the hallways. Each day during the week, students will review books on the morning news. Friday will be Pajama Day Read In. Students may wear pajamas and curl up with a good book. AR Success Parties throughout the week. Authors highlighted each day on morning news. Readers are Leaders announced on morning news. Promotional ads for February book fair announced on morning news. Pictures of teachers reading favorite books displayed in Media Center Author visit. Book jacket contest-students draw cover of favorite book. Intensive Reading students visit K-8 school to read to elementary students. Students share life-changing book titles on morning news. Teachers make posters recommending favorite books. Student book recommendations-shared in Media Center. Drama presentations in the courtyard during lunch. Principal and Assistant Principal introduce Literacy Week on morning news and afternoon announcements. Teachers will record the number of minutes their students read. Kick off Literacy Week with week-long author study on author of choice Kick off Read-A-Thon for all grade levels. Students make themselves comfortable and slip off their shoes while reading. K-5 Million Minute Marathon- 20 minutes of purposeful Independent reading time in addition to regular reading block Kindergarten- literacy interviews School-Wide Book of the Month and Vocabulary Parade Kick-Off 2 nd Grade- Literacy Links Million Minute Marathon Morning news kick-off: announce Millionaire s Club-classes read 20 extra minutes every day. In addition, optional literacy activities provided. Make Your Mark! Students will create bookmarks and display in Media Center. School-wide Read-a-thon; if goal reached, administrators will be Silly- Stringed. Celebrity and guest readers in classrooms Students share life-changing book titles on morning news. Teachers make posters recommending favorite books. Student book recommendations-shared in Media Center.

5 Tuesday, January 26th Wednesday, January 27th Family Literature Night: guest readers will read or act out favorite stories. There will be pizza for sale! TIED UP WITH A BOOK TUESDAY Wear a tie! Team up for Reading Tuesday students can wear a shirt to represent their favorite sports team. 4 th Grade Biscuits & Books 1 st Grade- Literacy Fortune Teller 2 nd Grade- Spotlight on Favorite Books T-Shirt Tuesday students, teachers, and staff will wear shirts with words that will be read throughout the day. Literature-based Lego displays. Continue author study and create visual display about author (bulletin board, door décor, etc.). Million Minute Reading School-wide Hats Off to Reading-students wear favorite hats School-wide reading activity: If I Couldn t Read Morning news: review pledge; students give book talks Wear crazy socks Literacy Fashion Show-elementary students invited for a special presentation and lunch in the courtyard. Dress up for Dollar Day. WORDS, WORDS, WEDNESDAY/Wonderful Wednesday Warm Up Wednesday students will wear gloves/mittens/scarves and/or cover up with a blanket while they chill out with a good book! Students may wear a hat for Hats off for Literacy Day. Meet and Greet an Author-author Jennifer Swanson will visit all grade levels. 4 th Grade Biscuits & Books 1 st Grade- Literacy Fortune Teller 2 nd Grade- Spotlight on Favorite Books Million Minute Marathon Our Reading Is So Bright We Have to Wear Shades Day. Students will be allowed to wear sunglasses while reading. Poem in Your Pocket Day-students select their favorite poem, carry it with them and share it with others. Stingray Success Enrichment Block (Reading for Pleasure, Media Center and 7 th grade Book Club) Day of the Arts: Dance Flash Mob during all lunches, Drama: spotlight authors (Shakespeare, Dickens, Poe), Graphic Design Supports Literacy (view the courtyard gallery), Art Walk Thursday Students Sock it to reading, wear your craziest socks and a Readable T-shirt to support reading in school and anywhere. (T-shirts must be school appropriate) ESE students make sticker awards for costume winners. Teachers read aloud to students.

6 Students sign pledge to meet reading goals. Every morning s news program will focus on a Celebrate Literacy Week activity. Students may wear a hat for Hats off for Literacy Day. Million Minute P.A.R.T.Y! For 20 minutes, Pick Anything and Read To Yourself! Student Book Swap drop-off-bring a gently-used book to swap on Friday. Thursday, STOCK UP ON GOOD BOOKS THURSDAY - Wear fun stockings!/ Sock it January 28th to Reading Day. Students can wear bright, colorful socks. Theater Thursday Lights, camera, action! Students will participate in Readers Theater. Guest readers (Principal, Assistant Principal, ILC, office staff etc. ) will go to classes to read aloud their favorite book. Reading Heroes special presentation from Mark Alan for all grade levels Visiting author/illustrator Mark Wayne Adams assemblies: 1:00 3-5; 1:45 K-2 2 nd Grade- Literacy Collage Literacy Night 2016: 6:30-8:30; Doors open 6:15 Presentations from visiting authors/illustrators: Mark W. Adams, Jane Wood, Heather Hamel, Libby Rammage, and Linda Carr. Other participants/activities include, St. Johns County Library card sign up, parent literacy information station, business partner shopping experiences and demonstrations, literacy based door prizes, free books for all students, and refreshments. Intermediate and primary students will pair up to read. Books and Snacks-teachers can swap books. Friday, FOCUS ON READING FRIDAY wear glasses! January 29th Be a Superhero Reader Friday readers are superheroes! Wear superhero attire. Grades K-5 will attend the magic show Heroes of Literacy, with magician Mark Allan. Fantastic Friday -students will enjoy popcorn while they pop open the perfect book! Pajama Day Read-In -students may wear pajamas and curl up with a good book.

7 1 st Grade- Book Jacket Projects 2 nd Grade- Book Recommendations 5 th Grade- Idiom Costume Parade based on Miss Alaineus: A Vocabulary Disaster 5 th Grade- Vocabulary Parade to include speech bubbles to match word definition Guess the Book: students will make "Heads Up" style cards with clues about their favorite book and partners will guess the book. Score With Books Day students wear favorite team gear to show support for Literacy Week. Principal s Book Bistro Stomp Out Illiteracy. Wear your boots to kick up your support for reading to change our world. Pajama Day Read-In : Students may wear pajamas and curl up with a good book. O and Soe: Storytelling and Songs with Mr. O and Mr. Bledsoe Students select a book from those turned in. Student band will perform.
