1 Grade 6 Summer Reading Challenge Complete the following summer reading challenges to show your reading/writing strengths and interests. Name Welcome to 6 th grade! You are required to complete this packet for your summer reading assignment. You are asked to complete each reading challenge, but only two of the challenges ask you to read books. Please do not limit your summer reading to merely two books. You will find a reading log on the last page of the packet. This packet will be your first test grade of 6 th grade ELA. Please take your time and complete each task to the best of your ability. Do your own work and please choose challenging, yet grade/age appropriate books. Let your mom or dad help you decide on what you should read. (Parents should approve your reading selections for each item you read for this packet.)

2 Challenge #1: Research (10 points) Summer is a great chance to learn about the history and science of something you enjoy. Pick a summer topic of interest (swimming, lemonade, the ocean, etc., or anything at all) and research! Write a summary of your findings below: Topic: Paragraph: Where did you find your information?

3 Challenge #2: Newspaper Knowledge (15 points) Explore a newspaper to learn about current events. Can you find key components in a newspaper? (Staple the article to this page) Write headline that catches your attention: Summarize the article: What was the newspaper you read?

5 Challenge # 3: Reading Aloud (5 points) Find a spot in the sun to share your favorite children s book with a young child or sibling. Read it aloud to them and ask questions about the book while you read. Make it fun. (Practice reading the book before you read it aloud to your friend/sibling.) Take a picture of you and your friend and glue it below. Name of friend/sibling? What book did you choose? Write the questions that you asked him/her:

6 Challenge #4 Understanding Magazine Articles (5 points) Find a non-fiction magazine that interests you. Cut out the heading and subheading of an article and glue it below: Glue heading in this box: Glue subheading in this box: Based on the heading/subheading and clues you found in the text, what was the main idea of this article? 7 Challenge #6 Character Study though a fiction novel (20 points) Read a fictional novel with an interesting character. Write a paragraph about that character below. (Character traits describe a character on the inside and outside.) Use the following checklist as a guideline to help you: Physical Characteristics-use text to describe what your character looks like. (Physical appearance) Personality Characteristics-use text to explain how your character feels/acts/responds to specific situations. Character s Emotions: Was there a time when this specific character was upset or extremely happy, or sad, or nervous, etc.? List a few of the emotions he/she had throughout the novel and explain why he/she felt this way. What was happening? Does your character change throughout the novel? 8 Challenge #7 Nonfiction Book Review (20 points) Choose a nonfiction book within your reading level, read it, then complete the following review.
