9 Developing a search strategy Research Topic: Discuss the factors that influence the relationship between food intake and children's behavior Identify alternative keyword : food : hunger, diet, sugar, chocolate children : infants, boys/girls, toddlers behavior :hyperactive, depression, anxiety

10 Combining Terms : Boolean operator While searching in OPAC or databases to find books or journal articles construct search queries using Boolean AND : Narrow a search, get more specific results (eg : diet & chocolate) OR : Broaden a search to get more general results (eg : infants OR toddlers) NOT : excluding term not needed (eg : hyperactive NOT Depression)

13 Understanding Citations The importance of understanding citations: 1. Researchers must know where to locate/ identify citations for recording purposes. 2. Identify the different types of citation styles: APA (American Psychological Association), MLA (Modern Language Association), Chicago, etc. 3. Identify how to locate the full text of articles, book, book chapter, etc.
