3 What is it all about? Credit hours: 3. So, you are expected to work on your FYP at least 6 hours/week. Development of research culture/attitude among students How much time do I have to spend? How much is enough?

4 Where is the FYP Proposals? The FYP proposals can be downloaded at: ProposalsS1_1213.pdf Or copy from this desktop computer The password to open will be given during the briefing.

5 Can I Submit My Own Proposals? By default, it is discouraged but possible. You need to find potential supervisor and discuss your proposals. Please follow the proposal template at You need to finalize the proposals by Tuesday, 18 September 2012 and submit it through your supervisor.

6 When to submit the registration form? Start: Thursday, 13 September 2012 Note: you need to talk with the supervisor first, confirm, and obtain the password to register from your supervisor. End: Friday, 21 September 2012 How to submit? Online at No need to print paper (let s conserve the environment) You, your supervisor, and FYP coordinators will receive confirmation . Please keep this as a prove of registration.

Reminder: If you have committed to one project, please notify your candidate supervisor if you want to change to other project Do not register twice or more. Please have the approval from your supervisor first.

8 Regulation Final Year Project is an engineering research exercise and design activity that is related to the student s field of study, and it must be carried out by the student as a partial fulfillment for the award of degree in Engineering EAC (Engineering Accreditation Council) required that FYP should be conducted individually. (Somehow, the 30% difference is not working) Current FYP2 student need to have two different titles. Please discuss with your supervisor to split your current title.

9 Regulation By the end of Project I and just before presentation, the student should finalize selection of components, and get their purchase order signed from the head of department prior to buy any components. Each title will be allocated a budget of maximum RM1000. Each student should purchase a log book to record his/her meetings with the supervisor. This log book can be purchased from Br. Matmuda (PA of DD Student Affairs). Before the event of Project I presentation, the project coordinator will check the frequency of attendance /meeting with supervisor (from the log book) to decide whether the student is eligible to proceed with his/her presentation. An attendance of at least 80% is required to proceed with the presentation.

10 Regulation By the end of Project II, the student should prepare his/her poster for poster presentation where the Industrial Advisor will assign their grade out of the 15% assigned for excellent projects. If the Industrial Advisor is unavailable to attend the Poster Day event, the senior staff of the respective department will then perform an ad-hoc committee to judge and decide on the marks to be given to the students out of the allocated 15%. Approval for publishing the project or complete prototype in working conditions is required for competition purposes.

12 Log Book and Online Progress Report You must own a log book to keep track of your progress Online progress report (with logbook on the specific dates) MUST BE SUBMITTED at the following dates: 1. Monday, 24 September Monday, 15 October 2012 (+logbook submission) 3. Monday, 5 November Monday, 26 November Monday, 17 December 2012 (+logbook submission)

13 Online Progress Report FYP1 and FYP2 progress report: Your progress report will be forwarded to your supervisor and respective FYP coordinator The report should be submitted individually

14 Consequences for Delinquency Warning letter Failure to fulfill five consultation in the first half of the semester (and based on online progress report) Barring from presentation Failure to fulfill 10 consultation throughout the semester (and based on online progress report) Will lose evaluation marks by examiners (35+35) for FYP1 and (35+25) for FYP2

15 Extension Extension is not applicable for FYP1 The result will be either Pass (A-C) or Fail Extension for FYP2 is considered only for genuine cases/reasons (not encouraged to do the extension) Unavailability of equipment/facilities Maximum 2 months (automatically fail if more than 2 months) and maximum grade is B.

17 Submission of Report Do not wait to write your report in the last week (even last day) of submission. It will not work and it will produce unacceptable (and mostly plagiarized) report. The details on how to submit to Turnitin will be discussed in the FYP second briefing.

20 Plagiarism Issue Plagiarism software (TURNITIN) will be used to detect plagiarism in submitted reports Students are required to submit softcopy of their reports to FYP coordinators. Reports which fail to meet the target threshold value will be rejected.

22 Plagiarizing Acts turning in someone else's work as your own copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit failing to put a quotation in quotation marks giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not (see our section on "fair use" rules) From

23 How to Avoid? CITATION is the answer A "citation" is the way you tell your readers that certain material in your work came from another source. It also gives your readers the information necessary to find that source again, including: information about the author the title of the work the name and location of the company that published your copy of the source the date your copy was published the page numbers of the material you are borrowing From

33 Styles provide single-click access to specific style and formatting combinations. Word supports two style types: Paragraph styles Character styles Apply styles by clicking a selection from the styles group on the home menu.

34 WHAT IS A STYLE? A style is a set of commands saved with your document that govern the display of the entire document in contrast to specific commands that only control specific items in the document You can change the entire document appearance by changing the style

35 PLANNING A STYLE Creating a style is nothing more than making a template for the structure of your documents You will decide on font type and size and you can modify line and margin settings Plan for the appearance of body text and for the appearance of different header levels

36 STYLES AND FORMAT The format menu is largely self explanatory To create or modify a style, select styles and format from the format menu Explore the current settings for normal style to see what features are available besides font size and type

39 Using Endnote For Managing References

40 Why use? In producing a large research paper, it is highly advisable to record and store all references systematically. EndNote can be used in conjunction with MS Word to insert in-text citations throughout the paper, and to automatically load and format references at the end of the paper. (Note that Word 2007 has now begun to include citation management) Many journals and conferences ask for papers formatted in a particular style, and will sometimes send an EndNote style via . EndNote also has a series of templates which can be used to format the whole document ready for submission to a particular publisher. References can be downloaded from most major databases and catalogs in the world into EndNote directly.

It is a bibliographic database for managing references to be used in the publishing of manuscripts, reading lists, student papers or dissertations, according to a preferred citation style You can establish a library (or many libraries) on different topics, and copy references from one library to another You can store as many as 100,000 references in one library, and can select from hundreds of citation styles, or change or add your own citation style at any time Use EndNote while you are using Word, and automatically add your intext citations, and your end bibliography
