Items Donated at the Sandy library will go to the Sandy Action Center Giving Tree Sandy Public Library & Hoodland Public Library Friday, November 24 through Thursday, December 14. If you can t get to the library this winter, check a book out online! Did you know your library card gives you access to digital books? Keep your hands free and listen to books while you knit or clean. If you get snowed in and run out of reading material, check the digital catalog. libraryassistants@ci.sandy.or.us can help out if you get stuck.

2 Winter Reads What library staff like to read during the winter months I don t think I could get all the way through War and Peace, by Tolstoy, but the DVD version with Audrey Hepburn and Hen ry Fonda is my favorite winter viewing. I watch it on New Years Eve if I m not doing any parties, because it is very long and I stay up late to watch the whole thing. It is beautifully made with lots of snowy scenes during the peaceful festive times and sad war scenes. Such drama and pathos as well as love, loyalty and sacrifice. -Melody Mayner I like to listen to audiobooks during the winter, it keeps my hands free to knit. Behind The Beautiful Forevers was the last one I listened to. With intelligence, humor, and deep insight into what connects human beings to one another in an era of tumultuous change -Katie Murphy Olive, the Other Reindeer Vivian Walsh and J.Otto Seibold This is a great story of self-discovery! -Ananda, the dog Sign up to read your favorite winter book to Ananda at the information desk or call Anne of Green Gables series L.M. Montgomery The wintery themes, nostalgic traditions, and charming charactors give this book a cozy feeling. -Elaine Russell Little Women Louisa May Allcott This cozy family is one of my favorite holiday reads. -Susan Winsinger Long ago, a brave little girl named Anja wanted to be one of Santa s elves. So she leaves a note for her family and helps her elderly neighbor prepare for the holiday, then she straps on her skis, and heads out into the snowy landscape. From a red bird to a polar bear to a reindeer, a menagerie of winter animals help Anja make her way to Santa. I love this photographic adventure. -Thea Kuziemski

3 Sponsored by the Friends of Sandy Library, the Library Coffee House is held on the first Friday of each month at 6 pm. This event features live music, refreshments, and a craft for kids Portland, Oregon roots artist Lloyd Jones has recorded six critically acclaimed albums, toured internationally, and racked up dozens of major awards and accolades. He s a relentless road dog, hitting festival stages, Delbert s annual Sandy Beaches Cruises, and clubs all across the land. Fans enjoy his swampy blues, backporch picking, serious-as-anthrax funk, soul, roadhouse two-beats, and old-school rhythm and blues. Yet he may be the most invisible, best-kept roots/blues/americana secret on the contemporary scene. Jones is a master of the soulful under statement, the raw growl, and the groove. From his roots in muddy Oregon soil, he s forged a 30-plus-year career as a passionate singer and fierce guitar slinger, a clever and soulful songwriter, a bandleader, record producer. Jones is wildly enthusiastic about all that s true and good about Ameri ca s music. He is his own true artist who works diligently at pushing American roots music forward. He combines New Orleans rhythms, the simplicity of Memphis music, and the rawness of the blues, all for the 21st century. This music is not about louder and faster. It s about time, meter, groove. I thought Muddy and Walter and those guys were pushing the envelope in their era. They were using effects, they were inventing their own sound. They were modern. I want to look at it in a contemporary way. The gist is all the same Lloyd Jones is the total package. -lloydjonesmusic.com January Coffeehouse! Chihuahua Desert Mark Cash and Bobby Johnson, front men of the S X SW band Chihuahua Desert, will refresh us with their Trad. Country Western Fiesta music that they ve played throughout the Great Basin, Pacific Northwest and Midwest over the last 13 years.
