1 Learning Menu for Ancient Rome You must choose one Entrée, one Side Dish, and one Appetizer or Dessert. Altogether you should have 3 projects you create. Appetizers (Choose to 30 Minutes to Complete worth 5 points) Make Flash Cards for all 20 vocabulary words Make a postcard as if you were visiting ancient Rome. Entrees (Choose to 90 minutes to complete worth 20 points) Create a newspaper about Ancient Rome consisting of articles, comic strips, advertisements, and editorials. Create a travel brochure that would excite potential tourists to take a vacation to Rome. (Do this as if the culture is still thriving and around and you are the one stepping back into time. In other words, don t describe the ruins of the Coliseum, describe it in its glory gladiator events and all.) Take any Christmas carol and rewrite the lyrics to include information about a historical event. You must rewrite the entire song and it should rhyme. Include the lyrics to the original song as well. The information in the song must be complete and accurate. Side Dishes (Choose to 45 minutes to complete worth 10 ) Make an acrostic poem (vertical word where the first letter of each line spells a word and each line gives details and helps explain the chosen word) for the phrase Ancient Rome. Create an advertisement for a technological advancement (cultural achievement) in history. This should be a onepage ad that could appear in a newspaper or magazine. Create a top ten list of contributions and achievements from the ancient Roman civilization. Desserts (Choose to 30 minutes to complete Worth 5 points) Write the epitaph (a summary statement of commemoration for a dead person) like you'd find on a gravestone for a person from this unit. Create a wanted/hero poster for a figure from Ancient Rome. If you consider the person to be a villain you will create a wanted poster. If you think the person was good you create a Hero poster. 2 Appetizers (Choose to 30 Minutes to Complete worth 5 points) Flash Cards Your task: Create 20 flashcards for key terms from the unit of Ancient Rome. Each card will include the word on one side and a picture/sketch. The other side will have the definition of the word. Instruction: 1. Get 20 index cards (3 x 5) 2. For each flashcard write the word you are defining on one side of the card. 3. On the same side as the word draw/sketch a picture that is relevant to the term. 4. On the backside write a definition for the term that is a complete sentences in your own words. All 20 flash cards (1pt) Word (1pt) Picture/sketch (1pt) Definition (1pt) Neatness (1pt) Total / 5 pts Postcard Your task: On a large (4 x 6) index card create a postcard that you would send home to tell your family about Ancient Rome as if you are there. 1. The front of your postcard should have a colored picture of the civilization. 2. A short greeting (example: Wish You Were Here ). 3. The back should have a short note to your family describing something amazing about ancient Rome. (One full paragraph 5-6 sentences). 4. A stamp that represents a famous person from that civilization. Neatly colored picture on Front (1pt) Greeting on Front (1pt) Stamp on Front (1pt) Detailed paragraph 5-6 sentences (shows knowledge of civilization) (2pts) Total / 5 pts
3 Newspaper Entrees (Choose to 90 minutes to complete worth 20 points) Your task: Create a newspaper about ancient Rome consisting of articles, comic strips, advertisements, and editorials. Instructions 1. Give your paper a title that fits with the unit. History newspaper is not enough. 2. Your paper should include 5 items including: a. 2 news articles about events from the unit. These should be written from the point of view of a reporter who witnessed these events and was in the middle of the action. These articles should be a minimum of two paragraphs and should include made-up quotes form people involved in the event. b. 1 obituary of a famous person form this period. An obituary is a short retelling of the major events in a person s life that has died. c. 1 picture (hand drawn) that goes along with one of your front-page stories. d. 1 other item such as: i. Comic strips about either a person or event form the time period. Each comic - strip should be at least 3 panels in length. ii. Advertisements form a company that might have existed at the time. iii. Puzzles about the time periods such as a crossword, jumble, or word search iv. Sports report about a sport played in this period v. Horoscopes vi. Advice column 3. The front page design a front cover for your paper that includes the paper s title, a picture and a table of contents which tells the page that the parts are on. All 5 items must be numbered and included in your table of contents. 4 Travel Brochure Your task: Create a travel brochure that would excite potential tourists to take a vacation to Ancient Rome. (Do this as if the culture is still thriving and around. In other words, don t describe the ruins of the Coliseum, describe it in its glory gladiator events and all.) Instructions: 1. Turn a blank sheet of computer paper sideways and fold it into thirds. 2. Unfold it and number the sections on the back from left to right 5, 6, 1. I know it seems wrong right now, but in the end it will be right. 3. Flip it over and number the sections on the front again from left to right 2, 3, and 4. Now complete each section as follows: Section 1: Write the name of the location (example: Exciting Rome ) and draw a picture of the location. Section 2: Write the word History and briefly describe the important events of this culture s past. Draw a map of the location. Section 3: At the top of the section write the name of a specific site in this culture that every vacationer has to see. Draw a picture (or print a picture) of the site and write about why tourists should see it. (Why is it important to the culture? What happens there?) Section 4: Pictures of your place people might visit. (at least 2 can be printed) Section 5: Title it Accommodations and Dining. Draw a picture (or print a picture) and describe where the vacations will stay (in other words, this culture s version of a hotel. What would beds be made out of What would the rooms have in them ) Write about the cuisine (3 types of food) a vacationer might eat there. Section 6: Write a paragraph (5-7 sentences) that persuades tourists that this culture and location is the best place to take a vacation. (Hint: if it doesn t make you want to go there, it probably won t make anyone else want to either.) 5 Christmas Carol Rewrite -- (You may work with a partner on this activity.) Song choices: Winter Wonderland, Let it Snow!, Here comes Santa Claus, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, O Christmas Tree, Up on the Housetop, Jingle Bells, Joy to the World, Deck the Halls, Silent Night, and You re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch Your task: Take any song and rewrite the lyrics to include information about a historical event from ancient Rome. You must rewrite the entire song and it should rhyme. Include the lyrics to the original song as well when you turn it in. The information in the song must be complete and accurate. Your song must: Rhyme (1 pt) Rewrite all verses and the chorus of the song (1 pt) Change every word of the song (1 pt) Include multiple facts (at least 5) about the event/civilization ( 5pts) Include key people ( at least 3) involved in the event/ civilization (3 pts) Include vocabulary words (at least 3) from this event/civilization (3 pts) Topic must be clear in the song (1pt) Each verse must be singable to the tune of the song selected (2 pts) Be recorded, or you & your partner sing live in front of the class, or make copies for classmates and have them sing the song with you (4 pts) Total /20 points
6 Side Dishes (Choose to 45 minutes to complete worth 10 ) Acrostic Poem Your Task: Use your notes and the textbook to create an acrostic poem for the term ANCIENT ROME. An Acrostic Poem is a poem where the first letter of each line spells a word and each line gives details and helps explain the chosen word. Example 1: Poems should show Originality, Explain something from the unit, and Make Sense Example 2: How do we learn about the past Investigating ancient ruins, Studying artifacts, Translating foreign languages, Observing human behavior, and Reading primary sources, but we can t time travel Yet. Each letter explains something from the unit, makes sense, and each line has correct spelling. = 10 pts. Advertisement Your Task: Create an advertisement for a technological advancement (cultural achievement) in history. This should be a one-page ad that could appear in a newspaper or magazine. Your ad must include: 1. A drawing of the item or the location of the event (1pt) 2. Color throughout with neatness (2pts) 3. Why people should be interested (2pts) 4. A price in the unit of money from this time period with the amount it is in US Dollars in parenthesis. (2pts) 5. A list of what the item does. (2pts) 6. A made up quote from someone living at the time. (1pt) Total /10 points
7 Top Ten List Your Task: Create a top ten list of contributions and achievements from the ancient Roman civilization. Instructions: 1. Create a list of 10 achievements, people, inventions, events, and/or ideas from a civilization. 2. Rewrite your list in order of importance with your top item being the most important down to ten being the least important. 3. For each item write one sentence explain why you ranked it where you did. (that would be 10 total sentences.) These can either be part of your ranking list or in a separate section at the bottom of your list. Each item on the list is worth 1 point. Total /10 points Epitaph Desserts (Choose to 30 minutes to complete Worth 5 points) Your task: Write the epitaph (a summary statement of commemoration for a dead person) like you'd find on a gravestone for a person from this unit. (You may need to do some outside research.) Your epitaph should follow this model: Here Lies. Born Died Husband/wife of. 8 Wanted/ Hero Poster Your task: Create a wanted/hero poster for a figure from Ancient Rome that we have studied. If you consider the person to be a villain you will create a wanted poster. If you think the person was good you create a Hero poster. Your poster must include: 1. A sketch of what the person probably looks like (or print a picture). 1pt 2. A reward amount (it must be in the currency of that civilization and in parentheses tell how much that is in US dollars) 1pt 3. List the specific crime or heroic action the person did. (Example: Wanted for being a menace to society. ) 1pt 4. A made up quote from a person living at the time showing what people might have said about this person. 1pt 5. A written description of what the person has done in their life to be considered a villain/hero. (At least 6 sentences with correct spelling and accuracy of details.) 1 pt Total / 5 points
