1 IB LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE (YEAR 1) SUMMER ASSIGNMENT 2018 Welcome to the IB Diploma Programme! This year, you will be entering Year 1 of the IB Language and Literature course. Throughout the year, we will be focused on the importance and multi-uses of language from an international minded perspective. How does language evolve in its cultural context? What happens when that cultural perspective changes? Does media have an effect on how language is understood? Can rhetoric be manipulated to reflect community, conflict, and change? We know that English is a language like any other; one filled with nuance, layers, and bias. We also know that our understanding of a given text is influenced by a plethora of factors, such as the reader s background, previous knowledge, and interpretation. This leads us to ask several questions: 1) What do we look for in a story? 2) How do the genres of play and novella affect storytelling? 3) What are the common elements and differences in their delivery? 4) What does it mean to investigate cultural perspective? These are just some of the questions I would like you to explore as you embark on this summer assignment. Your job is to read one non-fiction inspired novella and a surrealist play, both written by Hispanic authors an ocean apart to investigate what language means in a cultural context. The titles you will read are: Blood Wedding by Federico Garcia Lorca (Spain) Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Colombia) As you read, research and create, you will need to pay attention to several things: The most important and compelling scenes in the novella and the play The way storytelling is used in both texts (including the order of events, visual elements, and their connection to the cultural and community each text is representing) How language is used to express, persuade, inform, or manipulate in each text The most prominent theme(s) addressed in each text If you have further questions about this assignment over the summer, please feel free to contact Ms. Richards at BLRichards@pike.k12.in.us. Happy reading, viewing, and writing!

2 Blood Wedding Task 1 Rationale & Paper A written task demonstrates the student s ability to choose an imaginative way of exploring an aspect of the material studied in the course. It must show a critical engagement with an aspect of a text or a topic. -- IB English A: Language and Literature Guide, page 40 The task, not including the rationale, must be 800 1,000 words in length (about 3 pages). The rationale should be words in length (about 1 page). If the word limit is exceeded, the assessment of the combined task and rationale will be based on the first 1,300 words. Rationale: In the rationale ( words), you must explain: how the content of the task is linked to the play how the task is intended to explore particular aspects of the play the nature of the task chosen information about audience, purpose and the context in which the task is set The rationale should not only include knowledge about the play, but also about the formal conventions of the text type produced and how they relate to the aims of the task. 6 Title of Task 1 Here you will include your Task 1 project in its entirely. Below are some excerpt samples from previous years to inspire your creativity. Example #1: Scene Rewrite An American Childhood in 2017 I awoke one weekday morning during the holiday season to find the world laden with frost and snow. We kids were all eager to get outside into the glorious powdery gift from the heavens, but first we had to be bundled up and nestled inside layer upon layer of clothing. Now Annie don t forget your hat! Your ears will freeze! my mother told me. And you need to make sure your scarf stays on! And don t- I cut her off, slamming the door and raced off into the snow Example #2: Newspaper Article Example #3: Diary Entries April 4, 1975 Dear Annie, You are in your thirties now and I miss you very much. I have realized that when you were a child growing up here in Pennsylvania, that you might not have seen how life treated me. I was never unhappy with my place in the house, yet I knew that it wasn t exactly the ideal life for a human. My duty was to make you and your sisters happy and healthy...i want you to live the life you deserve, even if it isn t the same path that I had to live. With much love, Your Mother Word Count: XXX
